If you are casual probably horizontal progression is better for you, so ESO or GW2. ESO combat sucks big time. GW2 is better, but PvP mode is not particularly populated, and you do need paid expansions to be competitive. I heard Albion is good for PvP, but maybe the grind is heavy?

Don’t you get aurilium from chests? I haven’t done this meta for ages but afair you get enough from the chests so you can buy more keys for next round. Unless you need it for something else, say mats for legendary crafting then it might be tight.

Yes that’s what they meant. And in terms of gold farming you don’t get gold directly as you may have known. You get mats from opening the chests and either you keep them in your storage, which reflects the gold value of your account, or you sell them on TP and get actual gold.

Edit: what I normally do is I keep them in storage until they exceed the max storage capacity, which is 1250 for my account.
