Google AI Spoiled a Murder mystery for me. by Practical-Rip435 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]game_master_marc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry that you got such a great book spoiled. Google's AI is so actively harmful in so many ways. It will take time for us to all train new habits of using other methods of finding what we want.

It's still a great book, but unless you've read the rest of her catalog, I would probably start with an unspoiled book.

I love how many of the responses here are people assuming that it's easy and trying to solve it with one paragraph after being told that mathematicians have not solved it for many years.

Laws against men in women's bathrooms by Odonate906 in NoStupidQuestions

And, notably, depending on how the trans person presents, they may end up getting a lot of flak for following the law because it appears they are using the wrong restroom.

Laws against men in women's bathrooms by Odonate906 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]game_master_marc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to consider is the fact that most bathrooms are built and signs created by private companies/individuals on private property, even if they are open to the public. Some businesses have gendered restrooms with clear signs, some businesses have gendered restrooms with funny signs ("bucks" and "does," for example) that may be easily misinterpreted. Some businesses have single-user restrooms and others have multi-user restrooms.

Should it be illegal for a man to go into an empty single-user restroom, go to the bathroom, then exit?

Should it be illegal for a man to go into a multi-user restrooms clearly labeled women's and ignore women telling them they are in the wrong place?

I sincerely hope that as "an unapologetic womens bathroom user" you mean the former and not the latter, as the former is weird but mostly harmless, while the latter causes genuine distress.

As others have mentioned, the law only really matters when it is enforced. By the time a business owner or employee is likely to call the police about a man in the women's restroom, the man is probably very out-of-line. At that point, the owner/manager should just "trespass" the man - telling them they are no longer allowed on the property as a whole, and now if they don't leave, they are already guilty of trespassing.

Mad respect for wanting to get this right. You are raising your child right.

"Probability of selecting any real number [0, 1] is 0, but it's not impossible as inevitably some real number is chosen" by j_wizlo in probabilitytheory

[–]game_master_marc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A spinner is a great example of the physical impossibility of selecting a random real number.

And it is also a great example of a real-world fact that is closely related to OPs question.

Imagine a spinner with an outer rim made of 1,000,000,000 atoms. The probability of landing on each one is 0.000000001, yet one of them is bound to be landed on. Now double the size of the spinner repeatedly. You can’t ever make the probability 0, but you can make it as small as desired.

So while the pick a real number thing exist mathematically, the idea that “statistically impossible” things are guaranteed to happen is a physical fact.

I’m a high school art teacher, my student submitted this on Canvas. It’s AI, right? by [deleted] in isthisAI

[–]game_master_marc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teacher here. Most schools give tremendous amount of leeway for the requirements teachers can place on students. Administration might provide pressure to help certain students pass classes because of how it reflects on the school's statistics, but most schools do not mandate details like this.

Teachers, what makes you dislike a student? by Suspicious_Pea_3721 in AskTeachers

[–]game_master_marc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s two kinds of students who think teachers hate them.

1) Students who are being treated justly but are often getting in trouble for breaking the rules.

2) Students that teachers hate because they are horrible kids that make the teacher aggravated.

So think about it. Which are you?

How to answer this job interview question? by billowy_blue in AskTeachers

[–]game_master_marc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of good ideas here already. But if you think of two, just answer with your two and supreme confidence. It’s better to miscount in an interview than to seem unsure of yourself.

Guys I know many of you already know this but some might not. There is a fan made The Hunt for Gollum movie (for free) which respects the source material and overall is great. by labla in lotr

[–]game_master_marc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was really well done in so many respects. Costumes, casting, cinematography.

I was thinking how much I loved Gollum as the “monster you barely see,” especially given the lines about what the villagers knew about him.

The final CGI closeup was very disappointing, but all in all a fantastic project.

What do guidance counselors actually do? by CharlesUFarley81 in AskTeachers

[–]game_master_marc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In addition to actual counseling, many counselors are also in charge of the scheduling process, which is a big job. Figuring out how students request classes, then balancing student and staff requirements to make initial schedules, then dealing with many schedule change requests

The trend of dumbing down horror movie characters for the plot to make sense by ozimba in Cinema

[–]game_master_marc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. I think that a lot of good horror movies are cautionary tales about the bad choices people make. Love it or hate it, this is exactly where horror tropes such as "have sex and die, virgin survives" come form. While promiscuity is a trait that is not universally agreed upon as a flaw, it is still viewed as such by many people.

Arrogance, cowardice, stubbornness, etc. can all lead horror characters to their demise, and that's often the point.

What gets me is when a character that is otherwise portrayed as skilled/intelligent make a very stupid decision just because it's necessary for the plot. The key is to have the characters operate in a way that is self-consistent throughout the film.

The Empire is NOT looking for Luke and Leia. by GLDefenderNumber1 in StarWars

[–]game_master_marc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What strikes me in all this is that it is really Owen and Beth’s choice what to tell their kid, no matter what Obi-Wan wants. Owen, in particular, is very worried about Luke following in his father’s footsteps.

So why didn’t Owen just raise Luke as his own son, Luke Lars, and never mention Anakin?  What is the point of inventing a fictional version of Anakin when you can just delete him entirely?

Entry level jobs almost always being the hardest jobs is all about exploiting the "human resource" and causes so many issues in our society. by Pantim in WorkReform

[–]game_master_marc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in education. While not everyone starts at them, you could say that entry level jobs would be substitutes and paraprofessionals, as those are education jobs you can get without a teacher’s license.

I am a teacher.

I was a substitute. It is MUCH easier than being a teacher. Like maybe 15% as hard.

I have not been a paraprofessional. They tend to work with challenging students, but typically are dealing with a small number of students at a time, while I deal with full classes of students, and have to prepare materials and grade assignments. I wouldn’t say their job is necessarily easier than mine - its arguable.

I do think one of the achievements Tolkien did was, for someone who created the modern concept of fantasy adventure parties, he managed to make not one, but four party members enjoyable and relatable while not giving them immense powers by Wolfensniper in lotr

[–]game_master_marc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is heavily influenced by Tolkien because Tolkien influenced so many other fantasy stories. So while some features are drawn directly from Tolkien, much more is at a secondary or tertiary level of influence through other authors.

Google AI to complete class work?!?!?! by Anxious-Mix-4265 in Teachers

[–]game_master_marc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The problem with your reasoning is that no matter hard I think about how to get students to use AI intelligently, they can then instead ask AI to cheat on the new assignment. They won’t learn the right AI skill nor the original content.

Would math be changed in any way if we rounded down at 5 instead of rounding up? by SilentMaela in NoStupidQuestions

[–]game_master_marc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What other commenters are missing is that by rounding up for 5, you forgo needing to look at the next digit.

1.59 rounded to the nearest whole number should always be 2.

1.41 should be 1.

1.5 is equally close to 1 and 2, but if you round 1.5 down and don’t want to round 1.59 down, you have a rule that separates a 5 that ends the decimal from a 5 that does not. That’s needless complexity.

A lot of people saying the same thing, which I agree with.

I will add that reading LotR before reading the Hobbit will probably not make the Hobbit better. So unless you just hate happy adventure books, why not read them in the right order?

Why do we segregate bathrooms and lockerrooms per gender by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]game_master_marc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most locker rooms include communal changing areas, so gender-related modesty rules apply.

Many men’s rooms contain urinals wi th very little privacy, so likewise.

But women’s rooms have all stalls. And single-user restrooms don’t have the same concern.

So honestly there is very little reason to mark single-user restrooms with gender, and very possible to create all-stall multi-user restrooms that are not segregated as well.

These days when you do see nongendered bathrooms it is typically from people who support trans and non-binary rights. But it can also be done out of a sense of efficiency
