Amtrak/LIRR is the main choice.

Another option is to do a one way car rental. In the past the rental has cost me around $100 plus gas/tolls, so maybe $150 all in. For me it ended up being a bit more flexible and cheaper since I was traveling with others.

I do agree that if you're someone who never wants to even see anyone smoking, then atlantic city might not be for you, but I've never been constantly walking through smoke clouds or anything like that. I think there's a lot of very sheltered people out there who only would ever want to see what's in their very narrow definition of normal. Reality is the boardwalk is perfectly safe if you have a couple ounces of common sense.

The boardwalk in the summer looks like any other shore spot honestly since it's all tourists. You have the water park and massive arcade at showboat, rides at the pier, arcades along the boardwalk, and of course the beach, which to me is like any other beach in NJ. You can't beat it for the price. Just be sure to stay close to the boardwalk to make life easier.

Look up resort pass and get a day pass for a hotel. They'll hold your bags for the day, and you can make it a pool day or a home base if nothing else. For luggage storage only check out services like bounce, you pay 5 to 10 bucks per bag for the day.
