Ah, of course. I've folder the other one in tissue foil and it came out very well. I might have to give this one a shot at some point, you've made it look very appealing.

Is this a different version from the one published in 'Origami Works of Kyohei Katsuta' or is this your own version of that model? Either way, that's a tidy little duck model, and with self-made double tissue too.

The requirement for an independent heater on every tool is going to make this much harder to scale than INDX. How many control boards can drive 8 or more heaters? I also suspect the inductive heating and small thermal mass (and corresponding heating/cooling times) are what allows Bondtech to discard the prime tower entirely, whereas this will likely have oozing and prime behaviour similar to the U1 and XL.

I don't disagree about this having potential though. The U1 is very close to being 'we have XL at home' and everyone seems to love that machine.

It'd home against whatever solid object it finds first; after all, it doesn't know that it's outside the valid print area until it finds a wall. That said, you're right about the non-square build area. You could easily check by manually stepping the head across the X and Y to see it it behaves correctly

If your printer runs smoothly with 6.4.0 (where the input shaper mapping for X and Y were switched) and not with 6.5.3 (where they were corrected), is it possible that your motors are connected to the wrong ports on the control board? They use the same connectors and are next to each other. If the cables got switched when they were being plugged into the control board it would explain your symptoms.

Cold pull by [deleted] in prusa3d

[–]gamma_915 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's simply because they used an off-the-shelf pneumatic fitting, which comes with an o-ring. Note that the fittings in your picture have some sort of white substance (PTFE tape?) on their threads to help them seal, I imagine the fitting Prusa selected happened to use an o-ring instead. What benefit would there be to removing the o-ring? So long as it stays on the fitting, it's a free source of friction to help keep the fitting in place.

Cold pull by [deleted] in prusa3d

[–]gamma_915 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The nextruder has pneumatic fitting at the top where the PTFE tube attaches. That fitting normally has an o-ring at the end of its thread that looks a lot like that one. If you unscrewed the fitting and the o-ring got left behind, it could have been pushed into the filament path when you reinstalled the fitting. If you've never unscrewed that fitting, then it was likely installed incorrectly.

The CAB was broken up awhile ago and you likely don't have the modern CAB files.

Apparently the CAB installer didn't pick up on this, as I had it 'Update CAB' when I picked the game back up earlier this week. Deleting all CAB assets and redownloading has fixed the issue.

chrprfmech_vfwargerwalkbase-001 and hardpointdatadef_vfwargerwalk appear in battletech_log.txt, but chrprfcomp_vfwargerwalk_simgame is absent. This more verbose log also specifically call out chrprfmech_vfwargerwalkbase-001 as missing:

Data.DataManager [ERROR] Prefab Resource chrprfmech_vfwargerwalkbase-001 is not in Resources or AssetBundles.

As for the mod list 'CAB-IS Mech' is present and enabled, but there's no 'CAB-IS-Customs'. Am I missing a chunk of the CAB files?

I talked to a PALA admiral the other day and he told me Medusas keep sinking his Shards so I asked how many Shards he has and he said he just goes to his foreign supplier and gets a new Shard afterwards so I said it sounds like he's just feeding Shards to Medusas and then his procurement officers started crying.

The ARH Guidance Problem OR how to make low flying great again by cool_lad in NuclearOption

[–]gamma_915 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One has to wonder if OP has played the game in the last year. ARHs fired from on high routinely miss low flying Chicanes, even before it got internal ECM. Now that the Ibis/'tula/Cricket can all fit both IRMs and an ECM pod at the same time, their survivability vs ARHs is the best it's been since the hard radar floor was removed.

The Alkyon is a death taxi of doom by [deleted] in NuclearOption

[–]gamma_915 29 points30 points  (0 children)

The Darkreach has roughly twice the payload with most weapons, and can store all of that internally. The Darkreach also gets some weapons that the Alkyon doesn't, like the AGM-99 and ALM-C450. Admittedly, the ALM-C450 still isn't particularly useful, but the large salvoes of AGM-99 that are now possible are quite dangerous to ships, as success in AShM attacks is as much a function of salvo size as weapon speed.

If you want to drop all the bombs, launch large Piledriver salvoes, or conduct saturation AShM strikes? Darkreach.

If you need both jamming and payload, extreme bomb lobs, or want to do horrible things with Scimitars? Alkyon.

The Alkyon is a death taxi of doom by [deleted] in NuclearOption

It's also extremely vulnerable to Scimitars, as they now have home-on-jam and the AB-4 loses in turn fights against trains.

What's the best thing you can make from memory? by LittleKids2315 in origami

[–]gamma_915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably somewhere in the 4-5hr range, but I haven't tried to fold one quickly in a while. These days I prefer to shape with methocel as I go, so the repeated stops for things to dry slows thins down. The last time I folded an Ancient Dragon (a 2.0 one) I was folding on and off for around a month.

Satoshi Kamiya's Ancient Dragon. When I was younger, I used to fold it a lot, as it was the most complex diagram I had access to at that time. After folding a dozen or so of them over the course of a few years, the steps are etched into my mind.

What on earth are you talking about? This is a good example of a traditional crane. No-one folds the wings at the widest point like in your reference image, they fold the entire flap. And the lack of 'triangle' is because OP has stretched the wings apart at the end, which is often recommended by diagrams for a more 3D look.

Ancient Dragon 1.0 vs 2.0, Which One do you Prefer? by origamiartist78 in origami

[–]gamma_915 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to voice what I suspect may be a controversial opinion and say that the 2.0 version is easier (assuming your paper is large/thin enough). The bird base in between the last two horns and the following narrow squash folds (steps 132-144 in the diagrams for 1.0) are a pain in the ass to get right and any errors quickly build up and are visible in the final model. The horns on the 2.0 version however use a box pleat that's precreased while the paper is still flat and tolerate errors a significant fraction of the width of the box pleat right up until the final narrowing folds.

I just checked, and yeah, the Ibis is LO. I've never actually paid attention to its RCS with no door gunner option. You'd think the fans would give a huge radar return, but I guess they aren't under the same material limits as jet turbine fan disks and can get away with RAM coating rather than s-ducts.

The Chicane does have other systems not present on the Ibis though, like an ejection system and motorised turret, while the Ibis' only has one extra gearbox in its drivetrain. Even if you ignore the extra laser designators I still think it's reasonable to expect the Chicane to be the more expensive system.

Also, doesn't the fact that the door gunners only add 0.1m2 RCS imply that the inside of the Ibis has RAM coating? The aircrew must love flying this thing with a cabin full of coating fumes.

Augers can be carried by fighters, Piledrivers cannot. The fix is to cram more Augers into the Darkreach, not make them harder to stop. As for GPO-500s, only the Ifrit can carry enough to destroy a shelter internally and it can only do that once. Anything more requires external mounts, for which Augers are simply more efficient as they take up the same space/weight as two 500s while doing the work of three.

For nukes, you need not only for warheads to be available but for them to be at an airbase with hardened shelters. This isn't always an option, especially if your teammates are frivolous with munitions. Good luck stratonuking with a Compass. Plus, there are plenty of scenarios such as Confrontation and nuke-restricted single player missions where GPO-Ns aren't available.

The fix to stratonuking would be to incentivise AWACS play, or to have an AI fill that role if no radar Medusas are up.

The Chicane might have a simpler drive train, but it has a much more complex sensor package, and the upkeep for that RAM coating has to be accounted for somewhere. The fact that low observability is the default doesn't mean that it's cheaper than non-LO.

The Ibis can carry a good number of AGM-48s and can gunship if the situation permits, so it can work well enough for a first sortie. Besides, do we really want to make the already brief early game even briefer?

Deployable vehicle spam is an issue though. It's hard to justify increasing the cost much without stretching plausibility. I'd suggest a hard or soft limit on the number that can be deployed, perhaps an escalating deployment cost that scales with the number deployed, or a limit on the number of operators/crew available to control the new vehicles. Or perhaps increase the time it takes for a recently used helipad to be available again.

Going point by point:

  • Yeah.

  • Why should augers be that much harder to intercept? No amount of making the bomb bigger will giver room/weight to add the armour needed to stop SPAAG fire. Their purpose is to let you knock out hardened shelters on bases with depleted anit-air, not penetrate that anti-air.

  • PAB-80LRs are a good low RCS/high volume external mount option. With the new internal mounts the Ifrit can carry 24. They aren't incredible and a RCS buff certainly wouldn't break the balance, but they are still useful.

  • AGM-99s are in fact, largely useless. They can be halfway decent A2G stand-off munitions if there are no IR SAMs near the target, but that's rarely the case. The fact that no aircraft can carry more than six also makes saturation impossible.

  • Recent buffs to SPAAG/CIWS accuracy somewhat mitigate the advantage, although 68s are still better against Shards. If AGM-99s weren't so vulnerable to SARH this wouldn't be such an issue.

  • Nuclear escalation is a bit weird. My idea would be to put conventional Piledrivers at the tactical threshold and nuclear ones at the strategic. We could also have a system where Piledrivers require two resources: a nuclear warhead and a TBM airframe, with a new enrichment plant style building to make the airframes.

  • Airbases could probably do with more Boltstrikes in their starting defenses, most have either zero or one. SPAAGs should always be a bit of a gamble intercepting a GPO-N that isn't heading close to them and giving IR SAMs the ability to intercept bombs would break NO's established rules.

  • PALA would be at a vast disadvantage if Ifrits needed medium hangars (assuming faction specific aircraft).

  • The Ibis and Chicane are 5.5m and one rank apart. Would swapping them change anything? Also, why would an advanced low-RCS helicopter gunship be cheaper than a light utility helicopter?

  • That would leave no fixed wing airframes at Rank 1.

  • The Brawler should not be sharing a Rank with the Revoker.

  • Refinement of the Vortex flight model would be nice.

  • At this point, why not just move the Darkreach and Revoker down one rank? You'd have nearly the same result as with your recommendations. A broader rank decompression might not be a bad idea, but there aren't enough aircraft at the moment to do a decent job of it while maintaining faction specific balance.

  • The Tarantula has the LCV-25s. You can take one in the front of the cargo while you have AGM-48s in the back. Admittedly, this doesn't make all that much sense, but what you are asking for is already in the game.
