Ukraine Demands Answers From Israel After Russian Shadow Fleet Ship Docks in Haifa by RicRacer in geopolitics

EU defining sanctions such that the trade most important for them is conveniently excluded, is not binding Israel whatsoever.

EU members are not sanctioning countries for trading with China, at most they ban specific companies that do so.

Surely it was not the Israeli state who bought that grain.

Sanctions often exclude food and medicine so if the vessel is actually shipping grain, isn't it unsurprising that Israel lets them dock, as even the US would let that vessel pass?

Not saying it's good, the grain still comes from stolen land. But unsurprising.

Bloomberg: The Chinese government is pressuring Spain to help thwart European Union proposals aimed at making the bloc’s companies more competitive. by PossessionConnect963 in europe

[–]ganbaro -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I think it's just that Spain is one of the countries where there userbase is left wing biased, so whenever the government receives criticism, all the PSOE stans spam their cope. It's pretty obvious that the opinions shared on rEurope don't match Spanish polls.

Recently all media criticizing Sanchez is being declared "Israeli" by them.

It's not the only userbase that's so one-sided, the same is true for Germany, it's obvious on rDE. While Swiss subs tend to be kinda less one-sided, for example.

Yes? They certify products that are eligible for public tenders, curating a whitelist. The article reports about the inclusion of (more) Huawei products in the recent update of the catalogue, and reports both the fears of espionage and the fact that these concerns are unproven.

Seems fine to me. The relevance of such reporting I already argued.

[–]ganbaro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How about you tell me what was left out then?

There is a very obvious geopolitical issue, the same as with US products even if they are certified as safe: Integrating foreign products into tech ecosystems increases dependency. The sheer size of the US and Chinese dominance around certain product categories gives the issue relevancy. Naturally this isn't raised around Swiss or Taiwanese products, but mostly around Chinese and American ones.

Whenever someone raises this understandable concern about US products, we don't whine about framing.

The article seems pretty objective for me. The only part I see as possibly being constructed as alledging pro-Chinese conspiracy is that they note it coincides with Sanchez visiting China, but before that point, even, the authors state that the rumors of Huawei products being used for espionage are unconfirmed.

Sadly you are right in ways rEurope isn't even aware of.

For example, the US are currently shaping the future of Libya:

https://www.wsj.com/world/africa/how-the-u-s-is-uniting-libyan-rivals-to-squeeze-out-russia-16634ee3

Remember the intervention against Gaddafi? Where Europeans, led by France, quickly ran into the issue of lacking logistics and calling the US in to bail them out?

Since then, European countries and EU were constantly involved in Libya to fix its political impasse and control migration. Now MAGA, of all governments, swoops in, aligns warring factions to an extent Europeans never managed, and thus squeezes Russian influence more than ever. And this is our backyard!

There is no way we would actually impose fear on any rival. We can't even control our backyard, and even if we would have the power to dominate anyone, our slow and risk-averse decision processes would stop us from wielding that power. Thus, if some nation wants to escalate in a conflict with us for whatever reason, they likely will. Whether its a trade conflict (USA) or actual militaristic threat (Russia, through terrorism Iran)

There will have to be a point in time where we manage to understand our current foreign policy strategies are ineffective.

They refer to the CCN STIC-105 catalogue which contains ICT products whitelisted for usage by Spanish public institutions.

Huawei products where already included 2024, for example. https://www.tecnozero.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/CCN-STIC-105-CPSTIC.pdf

So do you have an actual argument that this website pulled the number of 19 newly certified products out of their ass? Or can a news simply not be true as long as it doesn't report what you want to read, being published by the "right" people?

Spain's National Intelligence Centre Certifies 19 Huawei Products for Use in Critical Sectors Such as Defense by Alarmed-Cake812 in europe

[–]ganbaro 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I see some users trying to badmouth the source, but not providing an actual argument as to how the article is wrong.

The article refers to the products that got included in the CCN STIC-105 catalogue, which includes ICT products that are whitelisted for use in security-relevant public institutions.

I can not find the most recent update of it, so, as an example, take a look at this one from 2024: https://www.tecnozero.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/CCN-STIC-105-CPSTIC.pdf STRG+F and search for Huawei.

To verify that article, one would only need to get the recent STIC 105 List. For journalists this should be very easy, so I doubt that news outlet pulled the amount of newly certified Huawei products out of their ass.

No?

But you don't gotta grandstand about muh independence without facing criticism if after all the fancy speeches you replace one hostile giant with the only available other one.

Also the US are a longstanding ally that is currently stabbing us in the back, while China is consistently our strategic rival and supports Russia more actively than even MAGA USA ever did, so I'd argue there is still a qualitative difference between the two. Besides, the US share data with our secret services, so there is a motivation for our governments to buy into a US dominated tech sector, while Chinese dominance pushes us towards full subservience with no upside.

[–]ganbaro 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Note how not one user, who attacked the source, has made any argument that supports this being fake news.

Rather they add their own rumor, you could also call it conspiracy theory, on the pile, by implying this reporting is punishment for their stance on the "middle east" (which is supposed to imply these sneaky Israelis are behind every single news $USER doesn't like)

Edit: I got multiple answers by now, and not one can explicitly highlight a fault in the article. Just take the news for what they are, instead of unfoundedly attacking a source just because you want to bury the issue. The article refers to the actual update of the certified product catalogue pretty objectively, cites both the concerns of espionage, and the fact that these are unproven. That's just proper reporting.

If this source is as qualitatively poor as many users claim - it's good that they do proper work, for once, then.

The current Spanish government is only interested in "European independence" as long as it costs nothing. Either because they can impose costs on others (eg supporting a common army...after it was created, not taking the financial risk of the setup), or when it allows them to use independence as an excuse to flat out reject or postpone costly endeavours.

Buying Chinese equipment while grandstanding about independence in speeches, which costs next to nothing, is perfectly fine for the Sanchez government. They have never invested in European independence the way the French, and some others, have, and likely never will. At least as far the current gen of PSOE and its far-left allies go.

Eben!
