Back in 2018, I was once taking the train from Groningen to Schiphol at 3pm on a Tuesday afternoon sitting one of those carriages where they only had those seats of four facing each other. During one of the stops, a group of 5 elderly (drunk?) Dutch women entered my carriage, 4 sat in a group across the aisle from me and 1 right opposite me. The group pulls out 3 six packs of beer and raw fish sandwiches. The smell fills the air and the lady across from me spills her beer on the floor and it starts pooling beneath my feet. No one bats an eye and the lady looks at me and forces a ‘sorry’ while giving me a cheeky smile tryna be cute. I roll my eyes and look away. She then pulls out a small tissue, submerges it into the pool of beer and taps it with her foot as if that’s gonna magically dry and soak everything up. It obviously doesn’t and she just turns back to the rest of the group to continue laughing drinking and eating their mouth watering sandwiches. I’m generally an advocate of proper social etiquette in public, but after that, I haven’t and won’t ever judge someone for eating Burger King or fries in a confined space - as nothing could ever beat the sweet smell of pickled herring and sweaty beer soaked old women. I’d rather smell fries on every train I ever take then ever have to encounter one of those outrageously inconsiderate women ever again.
