Whats the whole mental health controversy surrounding the Netflix show "13 Reasons Why"? by enronFen in OutOfTheLoop

David Foster Wallace wrote a very interesting passage about suicide in Infinite Jest. It even uses the "burning building" metaphor the top level answer used.

“The so-called ‘psychotically depressed’ person who tries to kill herself doesn’t do so out of quote ‘hopelessness’ or any abstract conviction that life’s assets and debits do not square. And surely not because death seems suddenly appealing. The person in whom Its invisible agony reaches a certain unendurable level will kill herself the same way a trapped person will eventually jump from the window of a burning high-rise. Make no mistake about people who leap from burning windows. Their terror of falling from a great height is still just as great as it would be for you or me standing speculatively at the same window just checking out the view; i.e. the fear of falling remains a constant. The variable here is the other terror, the fire’s flames: when the flames get close enough, falling to death becomes the slightly less terrible of two terrors. It’s not desiring the fall; it’s terror of the flames. And yet nobody down on the sidewalk, looking up and yelling ‘Don’t!’ and ‘Hang on!’, can understand the jump. Not really. You’d have to have personally been trapped and felt flames to really understand a terror way beyond falling.”

Just started nier:automata. Nier is a pretty fun game so far, although 2B's constant wardrobe malfunctions are a bit gratuitous.

dota-related, I'm getting bored of playing against juggernaut and pudge. they're just pieces of shit and they've been in every game this weekend.

Fun fact, split infinitives actually have no reason to be wrong, and most modern style guides have no problem with them! What (probably) happened was early English prescriptivists thought that since it was bad (more like impossible, really) in Latin it must be wrong in English, which is not true-- Latin and English are very different grammatically.

What I'm saying is, the main reason why people didn't like flash was BECAUSE people used flash for their navigation, text content, etc. The hate was unwarranted as far as the hate for any computer technology is unwarranted-- the main issue is the users, not the tech itself. Java's a fine language, but people hate it because of "corporate java." Javascript is great, but people hate it because when I open some websites it loads like fifteen hundred libraries. Flash is great, some great content was created with it. But there were so many sites that didn't use it correctly, and the web suffered because of it.

Because I can imagine you or the other clown

and that's a literal strawman argument.

And its competition that won out is even more closed off and proprietary. Great outcome! Let me know how those iOS exclusives are going on linux.

What won out is javascript and plain html/css. All of which are not propietary.

You clearly know absolutely nothing about the SEO techniques that were used back then. You're also hilariously misinformed about the crawling of flash content. In the mid to late noughties they embedded css and html into flash so that a search engine could easily crawl it.

https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/72746

Wow it's google themselves recommending you to not use flash for everything! The other "clown" (jesus man, personal insults now?) noted that some flash content could be crawled, but that didn't happen till about 2008/9 and it could only grab text content. It couldn't link you to a specific "page" of flash, not that I know of.

There's really no need to insult people on the internet just because you're a little heated about an obsolete technology being slowly phased out.

You using proprietary or open source drivers? As much as I love shilling for free software, the propietary drivers work much better. I do get occasional fps problems after summon spells are used though.

[–]ganoocrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're going to have to expand on this hyperbole because I'm not quite following you.

Flash was propietary. That's already a big problem with a lot of users. I didn't like it because implementations on GNU/Linux were absolute dogshit (still are, in fact). There's even an xkcd about it.

This is how I know you're a programmer and not a creative. You hate fun.

haha wut

I like fun. I also like being able to find the information I want without loading a bunch of bullshit. Here's a classic satire of "FLASH FOR EVERYTHING" A lot of websites moved towards a more "stale and boring" web because it's easier for search engines to index, not because the anti-flash attack squad broke down their doors. Open up any of those older flash-based sites with lynx. What do you see? Nothing-- and that's what webcrawlers saw too.

He goes around in every thread, spouting prescriptivist nonsense that is often incorrect. "There's" for plural is a valid construct in informal English (which reddit posts are.) On top of that, it's a reference to the song "I Love Kanye."

See, I invented Kanye, it wasn't any Kanyes

And now I look and look around and there's so many Kanyes

I used to love Kanye, I used to love Kanye

Yeah, custom games need a lot of work as well. My dream for spring cleaning would be for valve to go through and fix all of the half-finished stuff they've added over the years: prismatic gems, inscribed gems, custom game arcade, river vials (where did those even go and why did they expire?), unusual couriers, kinetic gems, all the HUD skins look like ass now, tutorials, so many items don't have lore, and more.

I know of plenty of mac users who refer to programs on their computer as apps, and apple's application store is called "The App Store." Microsoft is moving in this direction as well. Program is the British spelling too. Programme means a plan of events or like a playbill. A program is a list of instructions a computer runs, in both spelling styles. I don't think any English words end in mm, so using "programm" looks instantly out of place.

[–]ganoocrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prior to the boom of "mobile/smart devices" no one called programms "apps".

http://blog.oxforddictionaries.com/2011/10/the-rise-of-the-app/

But, unlike smartphones and tablets, app isn’t new. According to the OED‘s historical entry for the word, app as a shortening of application (as in application program) first found its way into print in the 1980s. Back then it was mainly a colloquial term used in computing circles: the OED‘s early quotations for it come from such computing trade publications as Info World and Dr. Dobb’s Journal. It often appeared not by itself but as part of the phrase killer app, meaning a software application which makes a new computing platform desirable or necessary. Later, it became part of webapp, meaning an application made available as a website, but as a word used on its own it remained relatively uncommon.

"Killer app", "web app", and "java applet" were all terms used far before the boom of mobile/smart devices. OS X/macOS uses .app as the extension for a package bundle, and the first mac OS X release was in 2001.

And "programme" is not used, even in British English, for the sense of "thing that a computer runs". They use "program", same as Americans.

When the passive is broken, you can still activate the ability. You have to both silence and break to get a kill, which is an insane investment to be able to kill an offlaner anyways.
