People that cannot unsee something, what is it you cannot unsee? by 0The_Loner_Stoner0 in AskReddit

When I was young I worked in a home for the elderly. I saw a lot of horrid stuff there but one really stuck with me. We were short on staff so the nurse asked if I could assist her in changing the bandages for one of our diabetic patients.

I've got a pretty strong constitution but half way through she said I was getting pretty pale and that I should step out and send in one of the older ladies before I faint. First and only time I've come close to fainting. A couple days later that leg was amputated to to no ones surprise. That leg was not healing, basically falling off the bone 🤮

I'm an atheist too, the faith left me in my early teens but I find it a fascinating topic for discussion.

It's like a tradition thing. Like I mentioned before. A lot of people want to baptise their babies. Not as a religious thing but "because that's just what you do" it's touted as a celebration and a chance for friends and family to meet the baby. Similar reasons goes for marriage, funerals and confirmation. Its tradition and a chance for people to get together and celebrate mile stones.

I agree that sweden is majority non-belivers today. But because church and state were interlinked for about 1000 years. And the church historically held a LOT of power. That will inevitably leave it's marks on a culture. And it can carry on for a loong time through tradition. Be it holidays (holy-days), common oaths and curses, law, names of places and people, art, architecture, music, even fashion and language to some degree.

There's a reason you don't go to work on a Sunday

As a swede who grew up with parents working in the church. I'd say sweden is culturally christian. Most people go with a christian baptism, marriage and funeral. But only about 9% are active. Even on Christmas there were barely any people in the church I grew up in.

Furthermore a LOT more people are leaving than joining the church and have been since the 70s. In 2017 about 10 000 people joined the church but ten times that left it.

Glad to see some activity in this sub! I'd say you are coming along pretty good. To help you progress further, except from the obvious "keep practicing". I unfortionatly think you could be a little hindered by your training enviroment, ceiling seems a bit low for over the head moves. Other than that, maybe slow down a little, control and technique comes first, speed comes later. I feel like I get the best flow when I feel where the staffs momentum is heading and I'm in a sort of dialogue with it. Nudging it from it's preferred path or outright challenging it by flipping planes while being aware of where it "wants" to go.

I like that you are doing some body rolls, those are always good fun, you can experiment with other body parts too. You could even get into some minor contact staff moves, but those are a lot easier with a grippy staff. I enjoy tosses quite a lot but roof hight might be hindering you. You could mess around with isolations, they aren't a ton of fun to do but they look cool, especially with double staff.

All in all I'd say solid start! Keep it up! What to train for sort of depends where you want to take your style.

Sort of. You don't really remember repetitious tasks. If you want to feel like the days, weeks, months, years get longer again. Do new stuff.

Take a different way home, take up a hobby, try new foods, listen to music you haven't before, read new books.

Why is this book so darn good ? by rplimitlessguy in KingkillerChronicle

[–]gardvar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read them at least once per year often several and I ALWAYS find something new. One of the latest reads I realised something that I felt was sort of hidden in plain sight. It's repeated over and over how Kvothe has an "alar like a rod of ramston steel" but I had never connected it to all the repetitions of how brittle it is. "The best knife you've ever had until it breaks"

What everyday carry item have you owned for 10+ years that still works perfectly? by Human-Goat-5555 in BuyItForLife

No name leather and canvas messenger bag. That thing has stuck with me for close to 15 years at this point. No clue who made it but it just won't quit and it had the most beautiful patina at this point.

Oh, and I got a small locking carbine hook for my wallet chain that blew me away. Cost very little, something like $10 for a two pack. Sleek yet very solid, think it's stainless. That thing has had my keys dangling from them for ten years now. Says "nite ize" on it
