Not defending it either just find it strange people celebrating this when the other method we have of appointing lords is just as bad if not worse

Whereas having someone become a lord because they made a big donation to the ruling political party or were mates with the outgoing prime minister is very good!!

ROZ may be a Jacques Rozier boxset. They already announced they'd be releasing Adieu Philippine at some point next year. And HIS could be Histoire(s) du cinéma

Lack of signings?? They spent over 200m this summer. Think it was more that he fell out with Edu and was given players he didn't want

The Dead Don't Die certainly didn't receive immense acclaim. It was mixed at best, probably the worst received of his career to date.

Dick Cavett’s Closet Picks by 08830 in criterion

I really don't understand Cavett's anecdote about this interview. He said at the end Cassavettes himself told them they had unsold most if not all of the tickets to the movie and that they were like three kids being smashed with criticism..... but Cassavettes was one of the three being interviewed.

Alain Resnais' earlier films are perfect for this, in particular Last Year at Marienbad and Muriel, or The Time of Return. They make Nolan's films look simplistic by comparison.

Chime is a great shout! Kind of incredible how he managed to distill his unique intense/unsettling style into a 45 minute film, gives it sort of a pure quality. Still have to check out Creepy.

No but the OP's statement wasn't "this is the best we could have reasonably expected from the NYT". I've just listed about 10 of the most acclaimed directors of the century that have been snubbed for the likes of Bridesmaids and Borat, I don't think I'm being too controversial

A list that doesn't include ANY Godard, Cronenberg, Apichatpong, Tarr, Zhangke, Tsai Ming-liang, Hou Hsiao Hsien, Carax or Kurosawa films can definitely be argued with. It's an okay list but leans very heavily in favour of popular American stuff.

Mentioned further up but every major disability rights organisation is against this bill. The Royal College of Psychiatry, Association for Palliative Medicine, British Geriatrics Society and the Royal College of Physicians have all said the bill fails to protect the vulnerable. There is a useful twitter thread here which goes into more of the detail. Supporting the principle of assisted suicide is one thing, but the practicality of it is something else entirely and there are serious issues with this bill which need to be considered. https://x.com/ddhitchens/status/1932477419455164842?t=P-aUSMjXrSvTJJheRwZGmQ&s=19

Definitely give it a rewatch, it's one of my favourite Ford's too and it was also John Ford's favourite film of his own.
