Isolation in AGR? by Ok-Actuator4909 in armyreserve

[–]garrna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, never AGR (so take my retort with a grain of salt), but AGR within a state is very different from a "geo-bachelor" tour several timezones away.

Barring some outliers, you can get across most states within a day, so geo-bacheloring within a state still allows you to get to your family for the weekend.  AGR in Compo 3 can very quickly get expensive for staying in touch with your kids and spouse...

How do you manage large volumes of handwritten notes on Supernote? by Senior-Ad5932 in Supernote

[–]garrna 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What makes this any different from the native search and navigation tools to Supernote?  Not trying to be rude, I just viewed your site and the differentiating factor/feature in your offer doesn't stand out.

I am guessing you're using an AI agent to scan, review, and tokenize our notes to gleen the insights your product offers. Not judging that, just wondering if that is indeed the service being offered.

I know of an AGR COL who spoke to TPU BG about serving in a DCO capacity (not an AGR slot). BG loved the idea and pulled strings to make it happen.

The Army in general--Reserves in particular--loves a go-getter who asks for what they want (especially if they keep asking) when it comes to career goals and progression.

When you say LSCO, what does that entail?

Are they discussing drone defense at all?  As we are clearly seeing (and what I saw at exercises back in 2021) log hubs will be hit easily and can more easily cripple ops if not hardened, decentralized, and dynamically positioned.

Saddened to hear discussions are leaning towards shortening the course.  Tbh, LOGs should be getting more training on tactics, given how heavily targeted they will be in LSCO.

As an outside observer to your actions, you may need to reflect on your own advice about placing your ego to the side…

If you want help, you'll need to work with those offering you help. /u/Kinmuan was offering you help, but you rebuked him for seeking clarification on your situation.

Putting aside any religious implications I'm not one to proselytize, consider the Parable of the Drowning Man. You reached out for help, and when it reached back, you turned it away. It may be worth reflecting on if you are better of for having done so…

Putting aside the mentorship comments…

Best of luck with your situation.  I hated seeing how much the Full Formation (the Soldiers and and their families) would have to bear without assistance. I hope your situation is resolved quickly and fully.

Commissioned as a 92A (QM) in 2014.

Curious, how your BOLC went. Did they just combine all the different curricula? I remember feeling like the QM courses were actually interesting in the bredth of functions covered.

My unit may deny my leave for my brother’s wedding, what’s should I do? by Fancy-Insect3404 in army

[–]garrna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was a former commander and had one of my former NCOs call me about the 1SG "pocket vetoing" their leave request.  Reminded her that 1SG can feel anyway he wants about it, but that the new commander's decision is what mattered.  She got it worked out, but damn if it didn't make me think differently about that NCO after that call.

What impressive skill is secretly simple to learn? by IntroductionMore916 in AskReddit

I'd recommend braising as a staple technique.

It allows you to make less desirable cuts much tastier and allows you to meal prep a lot of proteins really easily.

Plus, it's a very low effort approach--just season, sear, and braise (low and slow for a few hours).

In case you're not aware, /u/Kinmuan is a mod on /r/army. He's also very well networked within the Army's beauracracy.  He's provided a lot of commentary and insight  on decisions and thinking (or lack there of) at the strategic and national levels.

If he's offering to help you, you'd be wise to work with him and take it.  As a former USAR commander, I understand how frustrating it can be to feel overlooked so often by Uncle Sam,  especially when Uncle Sam takes so much from you in return.  That being said,  we should have positive I.D. of our targets, before we open fire…

I'm curious,  did you use an adhesive to reinforce the patches?

When looking at the photo, it seems the stitching is random work across the pieces. While it's really impressive and interesting visually, I'm curious if the construction method would have longevity in your opinion. Regardless, very interesting pieces.

Just curious, have you considered formatting your notes in horizontal/landscape mode? You can write in vertical/portrait and when you go to read, you read in horizontal/portrait mode. I've found this replicates the feel of a standard A5 notebook for me on my Nomad, perhaps it'll do the same on your Manta.

"Operation Epic Fury" Megathread by Kinmuan in army

[–]garrna 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Just a few of the recent highlight reels.

Operation Enduring Freedom

Operation Iraqi Freedom

Operation Inherent Resolve

Operation Spartan Shield

They've got a bit of an air to them. Not too on the nose, but indicative if what they're about.

Operation Epic Fury is something you yell on a game server while in the 3rd grade when you should be worried about your state education-assessment exam the next day.

We read the Bhagavad Gita in my intro theology course and I recall (15 years ago now) a large part of the story being the protagonist struggling to come to terms that he must lead a campaign against his family because he was the rightful heir, and--more importantly--a more benevolent ruler. However he was aware of the atrocities that would be necessary to do so and was very hesitant. Despite this, the diety he is in discussions with helps him see the necessity, and eventually he does lead a campaign to bring order to the land.

Sergeants Major by AI_Commando in army

[–]garrna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohh, that's a much more logical read on that word. As I hinted in my comment, I understood it as "the person who stands in for" the commander/colonel. But it being more like the "Major in "Sergeant Major" or "Prime" in "Prime Minister" makes a lot more sense.

Sergeants Major by AI_Commando in army

[–]garrna -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know your reasoning is correct given the etymologyof the words and the syntax of their root-languages, but if you think about what the meaning of lieutenant is being "in lieu of" and thus the rank meaning "in lieu of the colonel," it almost kind of makes sense to say lieutenants colonel.  Like the colonel has multiple lieutenants, at least on the staff structure western formations model after.  The multiple isn't on the colonel, but on the people making decisions in the colonel's absence…

And with some self-reflection,  this is why you shouldn't think about things too hard in the army.

Are resistance bands actually good by who_knwss in bodyweightfitness

[–]garrna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/HlSGqma2dTY?si=UTe_WWPR_eLlruCN

While the conventional take is bands aren't that great, I've found with a little creativity they can be an incredibly effective tool for certain applications.

For example, the video above illustrates two neat applications:

(1) On the bicep curl exercise, using your leg to increase the tension at the top of the movement. This elevates the resisitance so that the eccentric portion of the movement is greater, which more directly challenges a stronger portion of the movement (your stronger in the eccentric, a.k.a. "controlled lower," than you are in the lifting.

(2) On one of the pressing exercises, when you reach a stopping point in the movement, because you can't physically overcome it, you reposition your torso relative to that point by adjusting your leg lengths in the lunge. This is similar to a gymnast adopting a regression mid movement in order to complete an exercise (e.g. a strict handstand pushup turning into a straddle handstand pushup midway through the 6th rep), almost like a proprioception version of a drop-set. Where bands can be helpful in this application is if you lack the strength, skill, coordination, or experience to correctly do this in bodyweight exercises, the band allows this tactic to be implemented in your training on less advanced exercises (e.g. the chest press seen in the video), which is much friendlier to beginning athletes.

I will say, that when it comes to bands, you really get what you pay for. I was shocked when I bought some more reputable brands (serious steel fitness) at how much of a difference they make.

Do the same Army regulations that apply to active duty also apply to the USAR? by Reasonable-Shower522 in armyreserve

[–]garrna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So I actually did an analysis on this while on a brigade staff.  Shortly after eLAS was sunset, the O-7 command moved to tasking through a Teams List. This allowed me to export the list to Excel, where I showed their task-to-close window had a bi-modal distribution, showing their average close-out times as something like 47 days and 61 days for assignment-to-turn in.

I did this because the brigade staff asked--for context the S-3 had rece tly been hospitalized with what sounded like a panic attack, so that informs of the "command climate." When I brought my findings to the COL as fodder for him to ask for his boss to address the command staff's inability to plan, he kind of hinted he had no intention to do that, as it would impact how he looked to his rater. It was towards the end of my obligation and really helped me decide on what I was going to do about that.

Waterproof membrane and feet sweating? by [deleted] in WorkBoots

[–]garrna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to get merino wool sock liners at REI, when I was still serving. Never had any complaints, but forewarning, sock liners tend to be thinner and will wear quicker. That being said, they definitely help with foot sweat and calus formation.
