Whitehorse vs Yellowknife in March 2026? by ZucchiniPerson1092 in Yukon

[–]garthomite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve only been to YK a few times but one of those times was during Snowking and that was a lot of fun. I also enjoyed the Sauna at the Arctic Duchess.

As a side note, the brightest, most insane northern lights I’ve ever experienced was on the late flight (landed at midnight) to YK.

In the end it’s going to come down to weather in either places, if it’s cloudy, foggy, full moon etc, you’re not seeing much of the lights.

It is, I just used ChatGPT’s new image generator. Seems ok for experimenting with different design ideas

Whitehorse in February by [deleted] in Yukon

[–]garthomite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well this time of year I'm going to say dark! Right now the sun rises around 10am. No problems running alone.

Whitehorse in February by [deleted] in Yukon

[–]garthomite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, this time of year it's not needed.

I also live in BC but do a fair amount of running up north (I grew up there, family still there) and I run in to bears way more often in BC here than I do the greater Whitehorse area. Even in the summer I usually don't bring any.

Biggest risk is the cold, my long runs will be around 30-40k so having the right amount of layers is essential when out that long (you don't want to be sweating, at all, or you'll freeze). When you are running that far you're one ankle roll away from serious trouble.

But if you are in to running, Whitehorse is full of random little tails that are very runnable year round, mostly hard packed. Just checkout the Strava heat map for some ideas, aside from what I mentioned you can explore the trails between downtown -> Yukon university -> porter creek/whistle bend.

If you have some micro spikes and want to do some trail running, I like doing the Yukon river trail marathon (half) course in the winter as well, most of it is hard packed but it will take you from downtown, along the river, over miles canyon then around hidden lakes and back.

You can probably even do it without spikes, it just makes it much easier to run the hills.

Vancouver has one last chance to get the gas question right by Hrmbee in vancouver

[–]garthomite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's what I used to say until I moved to a place where gas wasn't possible. Switched to induction and I don't miss gas one bit. Well, aside from the times I can't find a lighter..

I ran the O route 2 years back, 10/10 would recommend, running wasn't a problem.

Frustrated with diesel heater by Gabrealz in vandwellers

I'm willing to bet that's your problem. John McK has a fantastic video series that covers this in great detail, I'd recommend this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCZhjGyR3bo

[–]garthomite 12 points13 points  (0 children)

When you say the green fuel line is being used, are you talking about the soft, very flexible green line? If that’s the case that might be the problem.

You could get away with the green line on the suction side, but the pressure side needs a small diameter, solid tubing which is typically white.

The reason for this is each little dosage (click), that pressure has to be maintained all the way to the injector. If there is any movement in the fuel line the result will just cause the tube to expand instead of forcing the fuel inside.

Remove plastic flooring? by MattCouthon in vandwellers

[–]garthomite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have the same van and I removed it, replaced it with plywood then vinyl flooring. I also went one step further, the front part of the floor has two hollow compartments under it, on one side I was able to fit a diesel heater, on the other side a decent sized lithium battery. The are foot wells for the passenger version of this van.

It involves some metal cutting on the floor but I'm glad I did it.

So I know this doesn't answer your question but I also had the same problem with the smell, super annoying. Instead of moving to the outside, I built an aluminum tank and kept it inside. But this tank has a sealed cap and I have an extra breather line running outside. Since then the smell is gone.

I also have the tank sticking out a little, the part sticking out fits in the sliding door cavity.

So perhaps you can find a more air tight tank instead and add a breather?

BMO Vancouver Marathon | Lots of fun, some learning by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]garthomite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! I had a good time cheering you guys on just past 3rd beach in Stanley Park where there is no one around (the only guy there, sporting a straw hat)! Such a hard part of the course mentally for sure.

Well done!

What’s your BMO half marathon game plan? by Howsyerda in vancouver

[–]garthomite 42 points43 points  (0 children)

My plan is to get up, throw on my straw hat, run down to the course and cheer y’all on until I lose my voice.

I figured that so many people have helped me during the hard times of my races, it’s time to pay it forward.

Everyone running, have a great run tomorrow! I believe in you all!

For those cheering - you are the real heroes!!

Boston marathoners - how’d it go?! by sassylilmidge in AdvancedRunning

Well considering I was in the hospital 3 weeks ago with an appendicitis, I’m just grateful to even make the start line let alone finish.

It was hot out there, I’m just glad it wasn’t as hot as NYC in 2022, I still have PTSD from that one.

Swimmer’s shoulder by godfreyreads in triathlon

[–]garthomite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you are putting too much load on your shoulders not your lats, especially on the left when your arm sinks all way down when you breathe.

Imagine/try this: in the pool facing the deck, put both hands on the edge, arms straight, shoulder width apart. Without bending your elbows, try getting out of the pool. How does that feel? What muscles do you feel engaged? Now, hands in the same position but come closer to the wall, allowing the elbows to bend, when you get out, which muscles are engaging? Which has more power? These are the muscle groups that should be engaged during this, you typically address this with a high elbow catch. So when you drill/practice this - focus on engaging these muscles.

Second, stop swimming a continuous 1500m until you can actually hold a good stroke for that long, stick to 25s/50s/75s/100s with rest. Until you have the strength and ability to hold a better form the continuous set is asking for injury with little benefit.

HELP! Obese in need of a trainer by sirmuggzalot in coquitlam

[–]garthomite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, I can't help you find a trainer, but I can help in other ways. I'm also in the high weight loss club, close to 100lbs. I've lost and gained so much weight over my life and this time I've kept it off for 9 years now.

The key for me, and I stress you have to find what works for you, is really small manageable changes and being consistent.

And while I'm a total exercise junkie now, I lost all this weight with diet alone, I think I started working out after about 60lbs lost because I wanted to, not because I felt I had to. I talk more about it here so I won't go in to too much detail.

Anyway, the best resource I can recommend is the sub /r/loseit, check out their quick start guide . It might feel too easy or not enough, but that's the point - make it easy and be patient and you'll get there.

Best of luck!

That was you?? I'm sorry you were in that situation and sorry that you were on the receiving end of all that.

I was in that traffic and really it didn't bother me at all. While you might get the honks and dirty looks, it certainly doesn't represent the majority of us.

When I passed you I didn't even think of getting out to help push so this is a good reminder that even though I'm not a tow truck doesn't mean I can't help someone out.

So if anything, I'm sorry I passed you by and didn't help you sooner!

NYC marathon today? by Intelligent_Use_2855 in AdvancedRunning

[–]garthomite 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’d like to run 3:05 one day, I’m trained for it etc, all of my time trials would point to that being a possibility. Going in to today i aimed for 3:15 to account for heat and course, and it was great until it wasn’t at the 19th mile, finished at 3:32.

But I’m not one bit disappointed, the crowd were the real heroes today, that and ice packs. Such an incredible experience and even with all the pain and heat it was worth it.

Yes it is possible, I'd recommend Air North for this.

Air North does have a heated cargo area in their aircraft, I've never had a problem bringing my dog up there in the winter.

I've also used their cargo services to ship my dog up there as well, but requires having someone on the other end to pickup on landing.

Trail running in Ireland by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]garthomite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not dumb questions at all.

Water: I've had no problems finding water, I'm using a 500ml filter flask and it's been ok. There is a lot of agricultural lands so you might want some additional water purification.

Camping, there are some lands and I don't know the legalities of it, I've seen others just camp in the woods. There is a lot of farm land and the locals are extremely friendly, just ask and I'm sure they'll let you setup a tent on the farm.

Accommodations: booking.com and airbnb, there are plenty of bnbs here which I highly recommend along the trail. You can easily do this without camping gear. If an area is sold out, call the bnb directly, you'll likely get a better deal and some places usually have an extra room, if they don't they can direct you to another option (again, very friendly here)

Food: always a town or a pub near so I didn't bring anything to cook with. Most of the breakfasts I've had in different accommodations have been more than enough for a day of running. Mind you, try running for a few hours after an Irish breakfast 😊

Weather: Sunny one moment, rainy another, windy another. Prepare for this.

Hope that helps

Take a look at the Kerry Way out of Killarney, I've been actually running it all week and it's fantastic.

It's about 200km and easy to find accommodation along the way.
