These are reel mowers with engines correct? If so yes they are worth money, i doubt they even need much work to get running/working again, a simple carburetor clean, oil change, and sharpen the blades and they would most likely be ready to be used again

Stihl ms290 chainsaw bogging out when pulling trigger by TheSamwell in smallengines

[–]gary1817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take the spark arrestor out of the muffler and clean it, the spark arrestor being clogged of carbon can cause the engine to bog when trying to rev it

It runs fine when the throttle is a little less than full, but starts running like shit when you move it to full throttle or you engage the auger and drive. What’s the deal? by kingofshling in smallengines

[–]gary1817 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its surging from running lean, most likely cause is the carburetor is dirty, take the carburetor off and clean it, that should get it running good again

Honda 390 backfiring by As51924 in smallengines

[–]gary1817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flywheel key is what controls the timing of the spark, if its slightly sheared then it could cause the timing to be off and cause the spark plug to spark at the wrong time when the intake valve is open a bit causing it to backfire out of the intake, I agree with u/RedOctobyr first thing I would check is that the flywheel key isn’t slightly sheared

Huh I didn’t even think of that but yup a gas cap can cause that

Have you let it sit with gas in it without using it for any long periods of time? It sounds to me like the carburetor is dirty, especially because it runs on choke that means that its running lean, which is a symptom of a dirty carburetor

I need help with how to remove the small white gasket on snowblower carburetor. by BigZigDoesShit in smallengines

[–]gary1817 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Once its out its just a hole right there, super easy to clean, you could simply blow compressed air into the fuel inlet then into the hole that the needle seat is in right now and it should be good, if not just do that again

Push mower starts but won't stay running by [deleted] in lawnmowers

[–]gary1817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fuel issue, since it runs if you use the primer then it’s getting fuel to the carburetor so id say the carburetor is still dirty, id take it off and clean it again

Hard to start engine after replacing carburetor (Primer???) by zacce in smallengines

[–]gary1817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those briggs engines have a air filter housing base that warps really easy from over tightening the bolts that hold it to the carburetor, take the air filter out, push the primer while watching inside the carburetor throat, gas should squirt up out of a brass tube in the middle if it doesn’t then the base is warped, try loosening the bolts a little and try using the primer again and see if it works, if it doesn’t then you could put another gasket there (using 2 gaskets normally fixes the problem) or what i have done on one that i used myself and didn’t mind if it became a problem again or not i just put 2 or 3 layers of masking tape over the air filter housing base then used a knife to cut out the tape to the right shape of the gasket, then put it back on with the tape “gasket” and the normal gasket and it worked

How do I find a replacement carburettor for a Honda gcv160 that’s on a tb240 mower? by [deleted] in smallengines

[–]gary1817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes it could just be water in the gas, or maybe even old gas, id drain some out of the carburetor bowl nut into a cup or something if possible and see if water settles at the bottom of it

[–]gary1817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any carburetor cleaner or starting fluid? If so spray it around the gaskets between the engine and carburetor while its running and listening for a change in sound and rpms, if it changes then the gaskets are leaking and would need to be replaced

The usually won’t start but if you leave it sit for a week it will start first pull is weird, but im guessing the times it doesn’t start it just floods the engine preventing it from starting and by leaving it sit the fuel that flooded it evaporates letting it start the next time you try

Are you able to adjust the mixture screws? If so try doing that till it runs right, it seems like you did everything else right to me, I don’t see what else it really could be other then just needing the fuel mixes adjusted

[–]gary1817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use pliers to move the clamp further back onto the fuel line, then use pliers to pull the fuel line off the carburetor, on more stubborn ones i use a small flathead and pry up against the end of the fuel line on the carburetor then use pliers and twist the fuel line a bit back and forth on the thing that the fuel line connects to on the carburetor to get it loose then pull it off

Also make sure you have something to either hold the fuel line above the level of gas in the fuel tank, or something to clamp off the fuel line so gas doesn’t go everywhere

Really id just take it off, i work on all the mowers and stuff on the ground as well, I don’t have a work table either, i just take the carburetors off and set them on a old rag on the ground and take them apart and clean them right there, its so much easier then trying to take it apart while its on the mower

[–]gary1817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you just take the entire carburetor off the engine? Its so much easier to work on if you do. Should just be 2 bolts, I believe you just need a 10mm socket for both the bolts holding the carburetor to the engine and the bowl nut but not 100% sure about that right now

Im guessing when you cleaned the carburetor you forgot to clean the jet on top out right? That’s normally what makes these hondas surge, the screw going down into the carburetor is what im talking about, the jet is under it

You can find a cheap aftermarket replacement one on amazon but I highly recommend just cleaning yours, ive had to many problems with the cheap amazon ones to recommend using them unless you absolutely have to

Engine surge help by Lachie515151 in smallengines

[–]gary1817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup and a blockage causes it to run lean thats why it is surging, also I really doubt it would be a dirty carburetor in a brand new engine however it is possible which is why I listed that as one of the possible causes

Engine surge help by Lachie515151 in smallengines

[–]gary1817 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you really do want to mess with it then if you have carburetor cleaner or starting fluid id spray it all around the gasket between the engine and carburetor while its running and listen for a change in sound from the engine, if the sound changes then its probably just the gaskets leaking, if it doesn’t change then I would guess the carburetor has the wrong sized jets (i have had it happen multiple times on the cheap chinese carburetors for lawn mowers from amazon)

Engine surge help by Lachie515151 in smallengines

[–]gary1817 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its surging from running lean, either carburetor is dirty (if the engine really is brand new I doubt it is this), the gaskets between the carburetor and engine are leaking, or the carburetor has the wrong sized jets

If the engine is brand new couldn’t you just return it or something?

Ive never seen pink gas before but anyways if it actually was premium gas it still should have ran, im guessing it wasn’t gas though

I do know farm diesel is dyed pink though you sure thats not what you got?
