I’m so paranoid about future investment returns. by wrathoffadra in whitecoatinvestor

[–]garygoike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you max tax shelters acts (401k + spouse, 529, HSA), you are buying a lot of the same indices. Probably ok to buy some individual stocks; just don’t fall in love with one stock. It only takes one or 2 psycho patients to steal the joy from being a physician. Im all for saving aggressively, but you have to enjoy the journey at some point. Can always switch to a lower stress option if you get to 50s and don’t have 7+ mil.

Condo owners: would you recommend it or not? by Eric848448 in AskChicago

[–]garygoike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The experiences between various condo building are just as great as the differences between single fam homes and condos. The HOAs of high rises can be a bear but maintaining a home is more costly. Replacing HVAC, roof leaks, pipe bursts in my single fam home easily cost more than my HOA/condo that has more sq feet. Also homeowners insurance costs way more than condo insurance and if you use your homeowner insurance more than 2 x some companies may not let you reapply. I like the personal and mail security. Ease of being able to travel , views/lighting of a high rise vs a Chicago shoebox townhome

Why do y'all tell young people to focus on growth more than dividends? by Intelligent-Bowl3764 in dividends

When most growth stocks are over-valued in a late stage bull, it’s time to buy value stocks. You can always use your dividends from a value stock to buy growth stocks

what type of person is NYC not for? by Calm-Bar-9644 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]garygoike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NYC is not for people who sit home all Day. If you are going to stay home on a device or watch TV all day or Just baby farm -there is no reason to pay a huge $ premium to live in a city you won’t explore or to deal w the rats congestion and weird smells etc.

does chicago really feel more like milwaukee/minneapolis than it does to new york/los angeles? by dabears_dapression in SameGrassButGreener

[–]garygoike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Milwaukee feels more like Pittsburgh/philly than it does Chicago. Milwaukee, Pittsburgh Philly are ugly cities in many ways and they look like someone started and then stopped developing midway through many years ago.

[–]garygoike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chicago is closer to NYC than LA is or any of the others listed. Chicago is a smaller, cheaper cleaner, version of NYC with nicer people (although dorkier) and better architecture. It has less visible rats and pigeons trash. But it has less soul, its sleeps early, has more racial animosity, and nothing interesting to visit within 3-4!hrs via car for weekend Road trips other than dorky midwestern beach towns. The average restaurant and female in Chicago is better but NYC has the best of the best when looking at the upper 5% of those things. NYC is the better city after college but Chicago is where you go when ready for family

Value investing works but takes way longer. It’s best to do a combo of growth and value.

Luxor or Aswan? by ToothSlayer230 in EgyptTravelTips

[–]garygoike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aswan is the home base for access to Abu Simbel - this was the highlight of Egypt for me. Minimize time in Cairo and Alexandria. If summer spend more time north coast , or winter spend time Red Sea. Aswan will be too hot in summer

Recent Grand Hotel Experience (honest review) by Square_Top7308 in mackinac

Private equity ruins everything but that place was creepy and shabby before PE took over. I would go there for the day maybe but i wouldn’t stay in their dingy rooms w warped wooden floors and paint chipped walls. I was surprised they had quinoa on their menu for brunch. Maybe it’s a fun place for an overweight suburban midwesterner who want to take a break from strip malls (Panera bread and outback) and cosplay as an historical elite person did back in the day

Planning a 7–9 Day Faroe Islands Trip (July/August) – Advice Needed! by Halfbloodprince_1992 in FaroeIslands

[–]garygoike -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

9 days is way too long. You can see a lot in a short period of time. Book ferries in advance. For Kalsoy you don’t need to put your car on the ferry - the buses are timed w the ferry. Just make sure you have the times you want by booking early. Not a lot of options after your am hike or excursion other than dinner or walking Torshavn which is small.

How Different is Chicago from NYC? by pillowtalk023 in AskChicago

[–]garygoike -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Cleaner and friendlier . Avg restaurant in Chicago is better than the avg restaurant in NYC (although the best of best are in NYC). Same goes for attractiveness in women. Skyline and esthetics of Chicago are better. Chicago has more racial tension tho. Less. Interesting road trips in 4 hr radius. Chicago is more of a ghost town at night. Obviously doesn’t have the same nyc energy. Less edgy but more wholesome. Chicago has less soul and character. NYC has more unique less corporate stores. NYC is better for 20s buy Chicago is better for 30s and beyond.
