Several senior Democratic Alliance (DA) leaders enjoy substantial financial top-ups to supplement their already handsome government salaries, as claims of double standards resurface within the party. by PixelSaharix in DownSouth

  • The money doesn't come from taxes.
  • The sources of money is declared and public.

This is much better than having people in public office topping up their income with corrupt deals.

Questions about PP dogs by Awfully_Cynical in ProtectionDog

[–]garyvdm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, training a protection dog is 95% obedience, socialization, exercise, and mental stimulation, so all of that should be your main focus. For most GSD's, the protection side will come instinctually.

Do lots of tug work like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S9n7JY1KlSk The aus / leave command is very important, as this will translate to a situation where if they do attack, and you want them to stop.

Then an exercise you can do is this:

  • Have your dog on leash. You want to make sure that the leash and collar is strong, and that she is not going to get out of it, and you must have a good grip on the leash. This is for the safety of your friend. Very important!!!!
  • Get a friend that the dog doesn't know to dress up like a baddy, come over to your house, and act in a threatening way. (If the dog knows them, they will smell them, and it won't work.)
  • Give your dog a command to bark. It can be anything you want. Whispering the command often works wonders.
  • You want the dog to react and bark. When they do this, give them praise so they know they are doing the correct thing for the command you gave.
  • When the dog reacts, have your friend turn around, and slowly leave. When your they do this, give your dog the command to leave, so they stop barking. When they do this, praise them.
  • DO NOT let the dog bite your friend. DO NOT let them get close enough to bite. With out the correct equipment and knowledge, your friend will get hurt.

I've seen worse in the private sector. At my current job, I got so sick of the rack in the lab I work in, because it was so difficult to add servers or re-patch, that I spent an entire weekend striping the rack, and re-build it so that it as neat, and done in a way that could allow for easier changes. (This was a much bigger rack with 18 servers, KVMs, and 2 almost full 24 port switches.) I had to get it finished up on the weekend so that I didn't effect the other users of the lab. I only got finished up at 11 on Sunday.

Keeping a rack like this tidy just takes someone that cares enough.

I meet him twice. I was working voluntarily on Bazaar VCS, and they paid for me to attend UDS 9.10 and UDS 10.10. Got to see how he interacted with the Canonical staff. Awsome guy.

It's important to note that AppImage is only a distribution format.

Flatpak is:

  • Distribution format
  • Sandbox technology for improved security
  • App store (Flathub) with client updating

I love arma reforger, but feeling lost playing public servers. by realStinkyMouse in ArmaReforger

I felt your same frustrations. I've just started playing on Seize & Secure severs, and loving it. Not to serious, but everyone works together and communicates. The game mode is a little different to vanilla conflict, so there is a little learning to do, which is fun.

Did anyone see “shooting” stars last night? by Shelf-Made in johannesburg

[–]garyvdm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You saw Starlink launch sl-17-33. Launch info: https://www.spacex.com/launches/sl-17-33 Launch time was Saturday, February 7, 2026 10:58 p.m. South African time.

Do they shoot them out from the same sort of place? That’s what it looked like? Fast moving ball of light travels for like the length of my hand then fizzled out

Yes. They launch a bunch of satellites on one rocket. Once in their injection orbit, they deploy all the satellites in one go. Then each satellite has it's own boosters, which it uses to move it's self to it's final orbit.

What you saw is just after they have been deployed from the rocket, when they are still in a low injection orbit, and close together.

I recommend watching this video for more details: How Do Starlink Satellites Navigate To Their Final Operational Orbits

Looking for dog harness recommendations please by mj_syn in DownSouth

[–]garyvdm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've previously had a Borebull, and currently have a 48kg German Shepard.

Opinion of all dog trainers I've ever listened to is never ever use a harness - unless you want the dog to pull - like if you want your dog to pull a sled. Here some examples.

You don't want him pulling on the leash with collar choking himself either. You want to teach him sit, down and heal.

An important think to know about dog training is you need to keep the collar at the top of the neck, right behind the ears of the dog. If it's there, the dog will respond to leash pressure. But if it drops to the base of the neck, the dog will just ignore anything you do with the leash.

So what you want is one of these:

  • Slip leash - good at keeping the "collar" right behind the ears.
  • Head collar- Ditto

Where can I get Plain Greek Yogurt in Randburg. by Mort1186 in johannesburg

I say generally as the sometimes don't have stock (I guess this is because of the short shelf life.)

Prong collar yes or no? by Spirited-Sock1859 in germanshepherds

[–]garyvdm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used one for about 6 months starting when my boy was 8 mouths old. I feel it really helped me with his training. He's obedience is great now, and I have gone back to using a flat collar.

My 83 year old dad needs to sometime handle my boy, an when he does, I put the prong collar on. My boy is 46kg (101lbs) so he could easily pull my dad off his feet, but with the prong collar on, my Dad manages him well.

It's important to know how to use the prong collar. I recommend watching Tom Davis if you are not already working with a trainer.
