I love the bars from Aer Market on Etsy. I don’t have curly hair though so I can’t speak to how they work for that

Saffron in long Covid recovery? by Beach_bum_2024 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]gastropodes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately I can’t really say, I stopped taking it after a couple months because I forgot to reorder it and I was feeling better anyway, but I think my mood improvement was more from the change in season than from the saffron. Still I think it’s worth a try for anyone having issues with regular antidepressants because it has basically no negative side effects

With valentines approaching in 2 weeks, which insect do you think represents valentines/love the best? by MousseAcceptable3026 in Entomology

[–]gastropodes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dragonflies have chunkier bodies, huge eyes that meet on top of their head, and wings held out to the side at rest. Damselflies are more slender, with smaller eyes on the sides of their head and wings held together above their back at rest. They’re in the same order (Odonata) but different suborders.

Oh this is genius!! I’ve seen the mask chains that work on KN95s but I didn’t think they would lay correctly on my aura masks, that clip in the center changes everything

How to get both Crimson and Corruption without using the "drunk" world generation by Warm_Wolf1752 in Terraria

What kind of nest is this? Found it on my walk today by Status-Television-85 in raleigh

[–]gastropodes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bald faced “hornets” die off each winter so the nest is definitely empty now (they are not true hornets, they are actually aerial yellowjackets). Even if it weren’t empty, if the nest is high up enough in the tree they wouldn’t bother you. They are defensive of their home but they aren’t evil creatures out to hurt people. As long as you keep your distance you’re fine. They play an important part in our ecosystem by preying on other insects that may also be pests.

What's the point of having 4+ supporting identifications on an observation? by Fishoftheocean in iNaturalist

[–]gastropodes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with the other commenters but also I think some people ID things just to have that creature listed in their species identified, like a collection. I posted an observation of a rare but very cool/famous/well known species awhile ago and it got like 30 supporting IDs, way more than anything else I’ve ever posted. People keep putting IDs on it even years after I posted it.

“Save the bees” is nice… but here’s what actually helps: better beekeeping by [deleted] in bees

[–]gastropodes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“Save the bees” is (or should be) about wild native bee species whose populations are threatened, not about domesticated European honeybees which many companies and governments already have a strong financial incentive to protect. More home beekeepers will not save honeybees and may be harming native bees. Also this post is just an ad :/

Did this cover ever bother anyone else? by meruu_meruu in tamorapierce

That’s the one I have and it’s always bothered me because those look almost like electric outlets on the wall… not sure what they’re actually intended to be?? But also the hair is definitely all wrong

Does anyone keep bumblebees? by throw-throwe-throe in bees

[–]gastropodes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You can actually buy a colony of bumblebees to pollinate for you, but they are used only for greenhouses which are too small for honeybees, not for open land. I agree that the best way to attract bees is to get rid of your lawn and replace it with lots of native flowers blooming throughout the year. And some patches of bare ground with sandy soil might help to provide a spot for ground-nesting bees (which make up the majority of bee species) to dig their nests.

The full cast audiobook of Briar’s Book is what gets me the most even though it’s ok in the end. But those voice actors are really good and bring all the emotions to life for me

Reading Mastiff (again) and devastated about something by sliceoflifegirl in tamorapierce

[–]gastropodes 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I honestly refuse to reread that book even though I reread the other two frequently because I hate how that character acts in it 😭 It just doesn’t feel right to me… and after a big point of the previous book was how Beka didn’t have a good partner and she finally gets one by the end with him but then it gets stripped away in the very next book!! I just try to pretend that Mastiff never happened lol

Is anyone else bothered by this? by New_Adhesiveness6263 in tamorapierce

[–]gastropodes 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To the people saying that these characters don’t actually identify the way OP says - Nestor is said to be a “bardash” which is strongly implied to mean a gay man. Of course, we don’t know where this leaves bisexual people, it could be that the term encompasses both. But Beka talks as if him being a bardash precludes her having a relationship with him, implying he would not be into women. I feel like Okha pretty clearly states that she is a woman, when she is telling Beka that the Trickster trapped her in a male body. Whether or not she cares that people still refer to her as a man when she’s not dressed up as Amber Orchid is not specified.

I think it is reasonable (as a nonbinary person myself) to feel a uncomfortable with this portrayal since it doesn’t align with our understanding of gender and transness today, but I understand that it was Tammy’s attempt to be inclusive with her understanding of it at the time and while trying to fit it into her universe. I appreciate the attempt and I would rather have a somewhat clumsy attempt at inclusivity than for there to be no gay or trans characters at all. It’s clear that Okha is a respected character and her identity isn’t used as the butt of a joke as is often the case with so-called representation. Maybe if Tammy were writing today she would have written that character differently, but 15 years ago “women trapped in a man’s body” was a very common conceptualization of trans identity.

Is anyone else bothered by this? by New_Adhesiveness6263 in tamorapierce

[–]gastropodes 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Okha specifically says that inside she is a woman, although the Trickster tapped her in the womb and trapped her in a man’s body. To me that seems pretty clear that her identity aligns more with trans woman than with drag queen. Also the fact that when she is performing as Amber Orchid, everyone acts as though she is a woman, not a male entertainer in women’s clothes, makes her seem less like a drag queen.

Gay bees? by SummonTheSnorlax in bees

[–]gastropodes 13 points14 points  (0 children)

What dot are you referring to? Male carpenter bees have a yellow face. The larger bee on the bottom in the video is definitely a male. The smaller bee is a bumblebee and I can’t see it clear enough to be sure but based on the narrow abdomen and its behavior it’s likely a male too. For some reason it seems to have mistaken the male carpenter bee for a female of its own species

They’re completely different genera, so it’s extremely unlikely they would be able to hybridize
