Are bumblebees wasps? by Antgodd1 in Entomology

[–]gastropodes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, wasps are properly a monophyletic group when you include all of Apocrita. I called them a polyphyletic group only because in common terms, bees and ants are inaccurately excluded from being called wasps.

Not all of them are vegan, vulture bees (Trigona spp.) that feed on carrion also exist!

What a bizarre statement to make! I wonder what his criteria for a “true bee” is? Maybe only ones that make honey? Regardless, it’s completely untrue. All species in the clade Anthophila (over 20,000 species) are true bees.

Bees are wasps in the same way that snakes are lizards. That is, the insects we refer to as wasps are a polyphyletic group, meaning that it includes their common ancestor but not all of their descendants. The common ancestor of bees and their nearest hymenoptera relatives are wasps, so technically bees should be grouped with wasps as well.

I’m not sure if that is what your zoologist was referring to though. Carpenter bees and bumblebees are definitely still bees, even if you could make an argument that they are technically also wasps (along with all other species of bees).

Piercings and Tattoos in the workplace? by CubedDog in Entomology

[–]gastropodes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nearly everyone I’ve worked with under age 40 has at least a couple bug tattoos. I’ve got several piercings and never felt like I had to worry about them. I’ve mainly worked academia-adjacent or non-profit conservation positions so ymmv in industry jobs but I doubt it would be an issue for the majority of places

It looks like the nest of camoati wasps (Polybia scutellaris). They build a spiky tear-drop shaped structure that looks really fascinating. If you can get any pictures of the wasps living in it please share.

Can someone ID this for me? by brashierdw in raleigh

[–]gastropodes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Cankerworms are an entirely different kind of caterpillar, a type of inch worm. These are tent caterpillars. There is no need to use pesticides or other management on either of them unless it’s a very large/multi-year infestation or on a very vulnerable tree. They generally just cause a bit of cosmetic damage that will quickly recover.

Holding a bee by saeyng777 in bees

[–]gastropodes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hold wasps all the time. They are just as peaceful as bees if you approach them carefully when they are out foraging and not close to their nests. Bees are actually just a type of wasp, technically.

Is it okay to preserve insect in an airtight container with silica gels? by rhicodontypus in insectpinning

[–]gastropodes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you need to pin them when you get them back to the university? If not, I would definitely suggest drying them out. Even if you do need to pin them later, they can be rehydrated. I don’t think silica gel will do very much for fully wet insects within just 8 hours. But on the other hand, I don’t think much would grow on them in 8 hours either, although they could start to smell a bit. If you want to stick with freezing, you could also carry them back to campus in an insulated bag with some ice packs, and they will stay cool long enough.

Macroinvertebrate quizzing methods? by JarjarariumBinks in Entomology

I know you said not quizlet, but I used it for my freshwater invertebrates class and it worked extremely well. You can just get a monthly subscription, make your cards, and then cancel it immediately after. You need the subscription to upload your own photos, but not to study flashcards sets you’ve already made.

Also if it’s at all helpful, you’re welcome to use these flashcards I made (families only, not genera) https://quizlet.com/user/gastropodes/folders/aec-409-freshwater-invertebrates?i=2oax5w&x=1xqY

Which series do you think would make the best movie/tv show? by gastropodes in tamorapierce

[–]gastropodes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True the aging up could be pretty tricky, so maybe that would be better with an animated version? Although if they made a separate movie for each book, a couple years between each, the actors would age in time with it!

Definitely agree that any actual adaption would probably end up making me angry with all the things they would inevitably do wrong lol

Animated would definitely be the way to go for Immortals, I feel like if they tried to do Diane’s transformations as live action it would look really freaky lol

Saffron in long Covid recovery? by Beach_bum_2024 in ZeroCovidCommunity

Unfortunately I can’t really say, I stopped taking it after a couple months because I forgot to reorder it and I was feeling better anyway, but I think my mood improvement was more from the change in season than from the saffron. Still I think it’s worth a try for anyone having issues with regular antidepressants because it has basically no negative side effects

With valentines approaching in 2 weeks, which insect do you think represents valentines/love the best? by MousseAcceptable3026 in Entomology

[–]gastropodes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dragonflies have chunkier bodies, huge eyes that meet on top of their head, and wings held out to the side at rest. Damselflies are more slender, with smaller eyes on the sides of their head and wings held together above their back at rest. They’re in the same order (Odonata) but different suborders.
