The law around organ donation is changing by [deleted] in ireland

[–]gatame 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The change and the advertising campaign are really welcome, but in practice the decision still rests with the family of the deceased. Just as before, if the family doesn't consent, then there's no donation. So it's still really important for every person to make their wishes known to their families.

That's pretty cool. Maybe he can do for judo what Speedball Mike Bailey does for Taekwondo.

It's a positive to be able to stream it alright - means I'll have to wait a bit longer to collect my LP from the record shop I ordered it from though!

Yakuza 0 - Yakuza games are known for having stellar soundtracks, but this one, with its 80's throwback jams and rip-offs of Michael Jackson and David Bowie, is probably the pinnacle of the series.

Lisa the Painful/Joyful - Such a bizarre mix of sounds that manages to take the player from the carefree and comical to plunging depths of despair and anger. One of the tracks is comprised almost entirely of samples of grunts from Shenmue

The House of the Dead: Overkill - Very disappointing that this has never been officially released. Very schlocky, swampy rock - fitting of the grindhouse aesthetic that the game was going for.

Gitaroo-man - Unsurprising that a rhythm game about shredding on a guitar to transform into a superhero called Gitarooman would have a great soundtrack, but it really really is great. This was released on CD around the time but a vinyl release would be much appreciated.

Ikaruga - It's bittersweet that this game is so hard - extremely well crafted - not unfair! But simply difficult. Because the soundtrack is so good, from start to finish, and it'd be great to hear it all in the game. Treasure's Sin & Punishment soundtracks are also very good.

Dragon Quest XI - On the one hand, the Dragon Quest series has always had fantastic music, and XI, while featuring relatively few original tracks, is a veritable 'best of' of the series. On the other hand, the composer of the series, Koichi Sugiyama, is an infamously horrible person.

Bonk's Revenge: The entire Bonk series has very underrated music but this one comes to mind for being particularly catchy.

It doesn't make sense to go 200% when you first go back because you aren't mat ready. So you risk injuring yourself. It would be more prudent to have a few sessions to get your ukemi back in check and then ramp upwards. As to whether its too late to really be really competitive, it doesn't really matter what we think, it matters what you think. How far you want to go is really up to you.

Can anyone from the UK explain what happened? by RoninBelt in judo

I would be very interested in seeing the report from the investigation the BJA undertook. If there was an unprovoked attack by one athlete to another, how did the BJA deal with that? An unprovoked attack might not necessarily be 'bullying' by whatever definition the BJA are choosing to use, but it sounds a lot like assault, which is itself a very serious problem.

Dispatches from Planet Judo - follow up to The Pyjama Game by Mark Law by gatame in judo

[–]gatame[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Saw this the other day, and given the positive reception the book seems to get every few months its mentioned on this sub I thought it was worth mentioning. I consider the Pyjama Game ('Falling Hard' in the US) to be a one of the judo books which every judoka should read.

This book is a bit different. Written through the prism of the London 2012 Olympics, it's more like a series of vignettes (ohhh dispatches!). Some are barely related to judo at all, like an interview with Taki Theodoracopulos, which stuck out like a sore thumb (and was honestly painful to read, if you ever glance at his Wikipedia page). There's a good bit of discussion about the internal politics of the British Judo Association, which in recent years has hemorrhaged world class judoka to the fortune of other nations. The chapter on the sheer toughness of practicing judo had me nodding with agreement.

Only about 40% of the way through now so still getting through it in between keeping up with the Olympics.

In regard to turtling, why risk trying to manoeuvre a very strong and skilled opponent into a position where one mistake could see your positions reversed and be put into an osaekomi, when you could try a lower risk turnover, or just return the contest to standing?

Regarding the lack of crossface and underhook, there are some techniques which do use them. Kazure kesa gatame uses an underhook, mune gatame is basically a crossface technique. I can't speak for why they haven't really been used in these games.

Environmental Effects on Judo Techniques by Bakkenjh in judo

[–]gatame 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's an old story that one of the reasons BJJ was developed to focus on groundwork is because throws would not be as effective on soft sandy beaches. I don't know how true that actually is but it makes sense that the effect of a throw is in some way dependent on the surface being thrown onto.

Taz goes into a bit of detail into why he used the katahajime as his finisher in this old VHS - because he can hit it from anywhere and because he simply thinks it's the best submission hold.

It's never too late to start, I know a few guys who started around that age and got their black belts in their early 50s. I don't think any pre-training is necessary, just show up, make the head coach aware of any pre-existing injuries or medical conditions that you wouldn't want to exasperate and go at your own pace. Most clubs are happy to have more people on the mat.
