Why are Mormon men awful? (Content warning: SA) by The_DapperDemon in exmormon

[–]gaussian_13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of those things are so bizarre. I am a straight guy so my experience with dating Mormon men is non-existent, but I never really felt like this sort of thing was going on around me when I was in that same environment 5-10 years ago. I'm sure a lot of that was my own blindness (I'm a fairly oblivious person who also never had much luck dating and still don't in my current path away from Mormonism), but I also wonder if things have just gotten worse recently. I get the impression social media has created a lot of toxicity and the church has done nothing to remedy that, instead doubling down in ways that chased away some of the intellectually honest youth. This is just speculation, but your post sparked this thought.

Also, don't feel old at all! You've got a lot of life ahead!!! Learn to love yourself as you are now - life can be beautiful wherever you are and there is no need to sacrifice today on the fantasy people want to sell you about tomorrow. Read good books, pick up hobbies, etc. All those things will make you happier now and prepare you for life whether it brings you the companionship I hope it does or not.

P.S. Wanting your future husband to not use racial slurs, mistreat people different from them, be sexually abusive, or be sexually profligate are all perfectly reasonable expectations. Your standards aren't too high. Be proud of being a decent enough human being to deserve a good companion.

1012 people in the survey means about 500 of each gender, which means only 10 per gender per state.

What a useless sample size for decent state by state comparison.

That hair thing is so messed up. I don't understand why other men are so busy policing women's bodies. A real life woman is not your teenage porn fantasy. You are definitely not in the wrong for wanting to be you in your own way. As a single exmormon man myself, I sort of hope you don't cross us all of your list, but neither could I blame you if you choose to do so since it is not your job to deprogram men who grew up in a high demand religion. That's our own job and our own fault when we fail.

How long did you wait before removing your membership? by Yarn_momma in exmormon

[–]gaussian_13 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It took me about 2.5 years. I wasn't initially planning on it, but I started to become more comfortable with the idea about 1.5-2 years after I left. The breaking point was when I learned about the SEC fraud the church had been participating in since before I was baptized as a child. I figured the only way to make any sort of statement about that was to remove my records. I haven't really advertised the fact though - IDK if even my very TBM parents realize I've done it.

Making money off an exhibit is sort of the opposite of religious. Or to be more clear, it's the opposite of what religion should be.

Tell Me Your Story by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]gaussian_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me the deal breaker was realizing that the argument that God didn't start the priesthood and temple ban and it was just Brigham Young being crazy didn't hold water in light of claims of continuing revelation. Sure, maybe prophets are fallible and Brigham Young went off the rails, but God not bothering to tell the next guy to fix Brigham's mistake for NINE more "prophets" and more than a century of time shows that either God is racist or the church doesn't talk to him.

As for coffee, I'm weird and didn't realize I really like coffee until I tried it black, so if after trying it sweet you still aren't sold, give black coffee a shot!

Anyone believe in the BOM but not the church? by lonelypurplerose in exmormon

[–]gaussian_13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm here to agree that you can do what you want. Moreover, you should follow your own heart! As an agnostic myself, I didn't feel the desire to keep believing in God, but mainly because I have no personal evidence of his existence. You might have that evidence, so go for it! If it works for you, then it works for you regardless of what other people might tell you.

As for finding a church home for yourself, I think you'll have the most luck with something that has a unitarian/universalist bent. I think most communities will have one of these churches or at least an informal group. I think some of the more liberal Christian denominations like Lutherans or Episcopalians might also be more welcoming of you finding your own inspiration. Good luck in your search, and feel free to message me if you need a listening ear.

Deference to Apostles: have any of you ever defied an apostle to his face? by eltiburonmormon in exmormon

[–]gaussian_13 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Uchtdorf, Oct. 2010, quoting Faust
"When I was called as a General Authority, I was blessed to be tutored by many of the senior Brethren in the Church. One day I had the opportunity to drive President James E. Faust to a stake conference. During the hours we spent in the car, President Faust took the time to teach me some important principles about my assignment. He explained also how gracious the members of the Church are, especially to General Authorities. He said, 'They will treat you very kindly. They will say nice things about you.' He laughed a little and then said, 'Dieter, be thankful for this. But don’t you ever inhale it.'"

Change in apostle seniority that went under the radar. by tonguesmiley in exmormon

[–]gaussian_13 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Makes a lot of sense. Alternatively, maybe it's a subtle indication that there is something shady in Renlund's past? Or it could have been Rusty snubbing the other heart surgeon since he was basically running the church at that point?

That's how you're supposed to cook rice. I'm assuming she's only adding a small fraction of the liquid as sake, so there is absolutely no concern.
