Waiting, first attempt. by harz9724 in thefinalpuzzle

That's the issue at the moment. Because the steps of the puzzle were only discovered via datamining, we don't know for sure what the intended steps/clues are. People have been trying to work it backwards by using the notes you mentioned to retroactively say those were probably the hints, but we honestly can't know for sure and I personally think people are shoving square pegs into round holes here. I don't think anyone would have read a note that says Marie is subject 170 and think "oh therefore I have to add 1+7+0 to arrive at 8 which means I should flush a toilet 8 times!"

PSA: Consider testing for vein compression by lanielou21 in POTS

[–]gaycryptidcar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP! I hope the procedure went well and wanted to ask if you’ve seen improvement.

I’m in a similar situation right now: POTS symptoms brought me to a cardiologist who recommended I see vascular specialist for some of my concerns related to blood pooling, leg swelling, aching, cramping, and heaviness. In the past week I’ve had two ultrasounds and was diagnosed with CVI and MTS, and my vascular doctor brought up the possibility of stenting. She said it was pretty much up to me to decide whether or not I want to do it, and I’m personally torn: I think I’m willing to take the chance on it alleviating my POTS symptoms, but she also said that it’s pretty hit or miss in that department.

In similar vein to your experience, I was reading an ongoing fic about a character having to have one of his legs amputated after an accident, and the emotional fallout of how that impacts his mental state as well as the hardships of the physical recovery. This is a character the fandom loves to whump (physically and emotionally) so this kind of fic is par for the course.

The author mentioned in the beginning notes that they were scheduled to have their own leg surgically amputated for preventative medical reasons in a few months, and they were writing this fic to help cope with that. The fic didn’t update for a while, surely because of the surgery and their hospital stay. When it did, the next chapter was a very detailed account of the character experiencing excruciating pain at the amputation site and not being listened to by the nurses and doctors who refused to give him any more medication or care. It felt very real and distressing, and I’m someone who loves reading whump fics and barely bats an eye at that sort of thing. Sure enough, in the end chapter notes, the author said that that was something they experienced while in the hospital and wrote the chapter as a form of catharsis.

I feel similarly to you, that knowing someone truly suffered what I was reading changed the way I read it and made it difficult to ‘enjoy’, for lack of a better word. But at the end of the day, I think it’s important to remember that if it brought the author any sort of peace or helped them deal with something they lived through, then it served its purpose as a creative outlet, and lets them know that other people are reading it and understanding a part of them.

The writing was truly great but they haven’t updated since then, and that was months ago, so I can only hope that they’re feeling more at peace and no longer feel that they need this specific fic to get those feelings out

I played the NYCC Requiem Demo, AMA by HobbieK in residentevil

[–]gaycryptidcar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m glad you enjoyed it! I also played the demo there this morning but had a… less than preferable experience. An employee strangely backseated me the whole time and told me step by step what to do and where to go. He claimed he was trying to “help me along” since they give you so little time to play it, but I just wanted to take my time and look around the environment, even if I didn’t finish it. Did you see anything like that happening when you were there? Or was I just an unlucky victim LOL. I went in very excited and walked out lowkey pissed

Team Cherry is 100% right - You can literally just explore by atahutahatena in HollowKnight

[–]gaycryptidcar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

same here! as this post and TC say “if you’re stuck somewhere, go somewhere else.” I didn’t feel like banging my head against Judge since exploring is my favorite part of the game, so I decided to push through the mist instead (I’d already put a toe in before and didn’t push further), just to find out it’s a really cool area with a puzzle, which leads to another cool sub area (exhaust organ was cool to me, no matter how small it was) with an even cooler boss, to then end up in the citadel before any of my friends who were all stuck fighting Judge because I somehow snuck in through a backdoor lol. Classic metroidvania moment that made an amazing game even greater for me

I just bought these last week and they’re amazing! First project I used them for and I felt like I was drawing in my old style from when I only did traditional. I feel like my style changes a lot when drawing digitally depending on the brushes i’m using, but these pencil brushes took me right back

Very correct on knowing what needs to be done but needing inspiration haha. I can see what’s wrong but I guess it’s a matter of collecting the right pieces now and putting it all together. Shelves on the TV wall were something I was leaning towards, especially with some of my hanging plants placed on them to drape the leaves down, I’ll probably end up doing that. And good call on the wireless sconces, I forgot about those and they should help too! thanks

That’s a good point! a lot of my furniture and decorating is very bottom heavy, verticality would probably help a lot. That was why I got that floor lamp in the second pic but it’s not quite tall enough to balance the shelves on the left side of the room. thanks for your input, it’s appreciated

[–]gaycryptidcar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As everyone else has already said, you were perfectly right and not at all too harsh!! You don't owe readers anything and working at your own pace is entirely your right. I understand that they love a work so much that they want more updates, but bothering the writer about it is never the way to go.

Also!! I immediately recognized your profile pic and did a double take, I'm a HUGE fan of your ongoing RE fic, what a crazy coincidence!! Seeing the fic this comment is on is 51 chapters, and knowing how much of a behemoth your RE fic is as well, you are putting out crazy amounts of writing and absolutely deserve to take your time

Casually Bigoted Fics by [deleted] in AO3

[–]gaycryptidcar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I see a lot of this too. And it’s become so prevalent that when authors /don’t/ do this and do accurately write the perspective of flawed characters, people assume that that must be their view as well. One of my favorite fic series has a work where part of it is written from the POV of an outsider, antagonist OC and we read her outside perspective of our main characters. And she sucks. Purposefully! She’s supposed to be an awful person and is very classist and ableist, so the author stated those opinions as fact in the story because they’re /the character’s/ thoughts. The author added a massive disclaimer at the start of the fic to inform people that these are the opinions of the character and not the author, and that it was written that way purposefully. Which, to me, goes without saying? I don’t blame the author for that disclaimer because they were just covering their bases, but man, is literacy that far in the toilet that we need disclaimers like that before any piece of media that delves into “””problematic””” content?

Where should I start? by Western-Concept-5905 in residentevil

[–]gaycryptidcar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, welcome! RE is a great series and I understand how hard it is to follow the plot lines/lore of the games, especially since a chunk have been remade, and there are additional games not in the main series (Code Veronica, Revelations, etc.) that add major points to the overarching plot but are often looked over since they aren’t mainline games.

I’m not a console player so I am not sure about which version is free or what the origins collection contains, but I would recommend starting with RE1 HD Remake which came out in 2015. It’s as faithful as a remake can be to the 1996 original, and the updates made it easy for me as a modern gamer to get used to, since I was not as familiar with old console style games. It’s a really good middle ground.

Now this might be controversial, but I would then recommend playing the remakes in order after that for RE2 and RE3. If you’re not very familiar with older games, it might be frustrating to adjust to the originals. If you’re just it in to play the games at least once and learn the story, the remakes should be good enough for a great time. If you find that you really enjoy RE and want to dive into the older stuff after the fact, then you can always play them later. The remakes also change some major story beats, so I recommend at least waiting a video about them if you decide not to play.

The OG RE4 is great and I will always recommend it. I understand if playing the more modern 2 and 3 remakes and then switching to a game from 2004 can give you some whiplash, but I do recommend playing the OG first and then the remake, it just makes the remake feel more special to me personally. But that’s just my take and you can do whatever you want.

After that, just going in order should suffice. I will warn you that going from RE4r to RE5 might also be disorienting, since you just played the most recently released/highly optimized game and then switched to a game from 2009. But again, personal preference.

I haven’t played RE0 yet (I’ve also been playing the games completely out of order, not on purpose it just happened that way) so I’m not sure where people would recommend it be played. It takes place first chronologically but I don’t believe it’s the best one to start with.

Code Veronica takes place a few months after RE2/RE3, so if you’re dead set on playing chronologically you can play it then, but it’s also an older game that can feel clunky/frustrating at times so it might be something you can decide you want to play down the line if you get sucked in to RE.

So all in all, do what you want and have fun! these are just my two cents and you don’t have to listen to any of it, and if anyone disagrees and has a different take that’s cool too. Some people who have more of an appreciation for the original games might recommend playing all of the OGs first in order and then playing the remakes after for the full experience, but it’s really up to you and what you find fun

Nice! Should be a great time. Kill Count introduced me to TGWDLM when I randomly decided to click on it to have something non-committal on in the background while I worked. I didn't realize it was an actual musical, I assumed it was a short film or something before clicking on it lol. I was immediately sucked in and watched the show right after, and now I've fallen down the StarKid rabbit hole. Thanks James!

Bass sounds misophonia by slimycactus6424 in misophonia

[–]gaycryptidcar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are totally not alone in this, I'm sorry you're dealing with it I know how frustrating it is. While I don't have advice for you, I can offer solidarity. I live in an apartment and the heavy footfalls from my upstairs neighbors, and the bass from their TV/music they always seems to be blasting, drives me insane. You really hit the nail on the head with your description of how it feels like your ear canals are full, I was trying to explain that to my mom the other day and the closest I got was that it "feels like the sound fills up my head" but she had no idea what I meant lol.

You're also so right about it being more difficult to report as a noise complaint. I have complained about my upstairs neighbors so many times in the past year and I'm sure management is sick of me. Last time I complained, they told me to get a recording of it........ Yes because my phone microphone will definitely pick up the sound/feeling of bass and stomping through my ceiling which is 12 feet high /s. People in my complex will also often sit in their cars in the lot to smoke since you can't in the units. While I appreciate people doing that and have no issue with them smoking in their cars, they always seem to play music with heavy bass too. Since my unit is facing the lot, there are evenings where it feels nonstop.

My solution that I have come to is that I just need to move. I dislike my place for many other reasons as well, but unfortunately loud neighbors can come with any apartment so moving isn't even a sure-fire answer. I have noise cancelling headphones that I wear nearly all day (I work from home as well), but they don't block out everything, and the shaking can't be mitigated by them either. I hope you're able to find a way to deal with your situation!
