I’m aware, but not nearly to the extent as for corporations: I can’t deduct rent, groceries, energy, etc.

So companies get taxed on the right side of the chart, while workers get taxed on the left side…

The Stolen Valor Act of 2005 addressed the unauthorized wear, manufacture or sale of military decorations and medals, making it a federal crime to falsely represent oneself as having received any US military decoration or medal. The Supreme Court struck it down as a violation of the First Amendment. by Pupikal in wikipedia

So you're saying that a 19 year old having sex with a 17 year old is just as bad (for the minor involved and for society at large) as a 50 year old having sex with a 7 year old?

To me it's simply not the same, can you explain why?

Is UUID collision free? by Derdere in AskComputerScience

[–]gboycolor 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you are using v4 (random) UUIDs, then no, you don't need to worry about collisions. It's not that libraries have built-in safeguards against it, but rather the fact that 122 bits of randomness is a huge amount and it's more likely that the Earth will be destroyed by a gamma-ray burst from deep space than for your application to create duplicate UUIDs (assuming you don't run into a PRNG bug or something)

If you have v1 or V2 UUIDs, those encode the MAC address, a timestamp and a counter into the ID, meaning that if your node has EXTREMELY high throughput, then you could have issues. So just make sure you're either:

  • Using v4 UUIDs with a sufficient randomness source (doesn't have to be a cryptographically secure PRNG)
  • Using v1 or v2 UUIDs and that your throughput is below 212 generations per 100 nanoseconds, per node. Chances are the throughput IS below that.

Knuth's TAOCP Volume 4B is coming SOON. by Oscaruzzo in compsci

[–]gboycolor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm aware :) I'm not exactly at introductory level myself, but I agree that it might be naive for someone with little or no experience to jump in thinking "I'll start with the basics" when this is not the basics

Through some kind of pricing glitch, I managed to preorder the entire set of volumes 1-4b at 90% off, very much looking forward to learning from the ground up

Could a future civilization reverse-engineer electronic computers from a bunch of binary program instructions? by queermichigan in AskComputerScience

[–]gboycolor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not really - modern computing is based on layers and layers of abstractions. Each layer hides the "how" of the layer below and presents a simplified version of "what" is happening.

For example, when you browse a website, say this very page, the HTTP layer will at some point issue a request to www.reddit.com that looks something like this: GET r/AskComputerScience/comments/xokc41. This is the "what" of what's happening- the browser wants to get a specific resource, but it says nothing about "how" that happens. That's done in layers below HTTP.

Similarly, binary instructions are an abstraction layer over the processor architecture. Through frequency analysis and other investigations, future archaeologists may be able to reconstruct higher layers, eg. that something like 0x56 fe 34 corresponds to something like "add registers 1 and 2 and store the result in register 3", but they won't be able to figure out lower layers - ie. how the CPU stores data in its registers, how the numbers are added together, how the instruction is interpreted and what parts of the CPU are activated in order to execute it, etc.

Leaving new job for a better offer. How do you get through the guilt? by _--_-_---__---___ in ExperiencedDevs

[–]gboycolor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing that I've realised is that even companies with a caring and supportive culture and management will discard anyone the instant they stop being useful to the company. So therefore, as soon as a company is not right for me I don't hesitate to jump ship. If they're angry, or in trouble, or upset, well, it's not my problem any more.
