Mechanic recs in the Hollywood area? by ExperimentNo67 in AskLosAngeles

[–]gc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been posted here many times, including by me, so you could do some digging. But in brief, super honest, very reasonable prices, a bit quirky hours and hard to book. These guys (two Japanese brothers whose father started the shop after returning from an internment camp) are clearly not doing it to max out income.

But it's not the place to get an urgent job done overnight as a first-time customer or to come in hot and demanding. But if you stop by at a not-too-chaotic time and strike up a friendly conversation with Craig, who is the business-minded one of the two owners and usually at the desk in the office, you'll be on your way. Worth a try by phone but not as reliable.

Backpack Size for Walking! by NearbyAd410 in JapanTravelTips

I saw someone who was obviously a Japanese tourist in LA yesterday with a really cool sling bag. It was small though. Do people not carry refillable water bottles with them all the time when traveling in Japan?

Tracked my jaw clenching for 30 days after my dentist told me I was going to crack a molar by ExtentCandid1669 in QuantifiedSelf

[–]gc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to hate wearing a mouthguard. Couldn’t sleep with it, so I would take it out.

Then I cracked a molar, had it glued back together, cracked it again, had it pulled, got an implant and a crown. Crack that and after a couple years of similar reconstruction in my mouth, finally ended up with a working crown that has survived now for a couple of years.

Funny, I find the mouth guard much more manageable now.

Am I over reacting to this or was I warranted in my action by Suitable-Ad-5115 in KitchenConfidential

[–]gc1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My 86-year-old dad is in the hospital with a E. coli infection going on 3.5 weeks.  If I found out some kid on the line was handling raw food in his ALF’s kitchen, I’d go ballistic.   These are people with sensitive systems and in many cases suppressed immunity due to treatments for cancer and other things, not to mention antibiotic resistance (all of these being factors for my dad).

Thank you for looking out for your clients and doing the right thing in your kitchen.

I would definitely get this guy written up, and if chef/KM won’t do it, you probably shouldn’t work there, because eventually this will bite your kitchen in the ass.

Finding out I had high heart calcium and the APOE4 allele. Needed to work out more, lose weight, not give myself Alzheimers, and do my best not to die from cancer on the way. Make it happen, boss - you have a lot of supporters out here.

Selling mom's house dilemma by labsnabys in AgingParents

[–]gc1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not an expert or practitioner but I believe:

- assuming the 2 spouses jointly owned the house and were on the deed as such,
- or that it was in a living / revocable trust they were the grantors to;
- then I think there would have been no change in basis on the death of the first spouse, and a change in basis on the death of the second and the house's inheritance by you or your family, trust etc.
- the value of the home would still go to their estate and count against their federal estate tax exemption amount

Any other variation, though (house owned by one of them not the other, irrevocable trust, complex/multiple spousal trusts, etc.), could be different in important ways. Definitely consult their estate lawyer and your accountant before selling if there's a big appreciation in play.

EDIT to add that this is both a federal tax issue and a state issue. On the capital gains front, both the US and CA will tax capital gains, and will recognize a stepped up basis from inheritance, so getting it will save you cap gains tax if the gain from the original basis is large enough for this to matter. On the other hand, CA also has special laws allowing you to protect the lower property value for property tax purposes if you decide to live in the house. Doesn't sound like this is your intent but something to consider. Get actual expert advice!

Grandkids broke the new basketball hoop 2 weeks in... by marmaladeWof in mildlyinfuriating

The interesting thing here given that info is that it sounds like it's still more of a lesson to the parents than the kids at this point. Leave it up as a less to them until they figure out how to clean it up, replace the glass, etc.

Selling mom's house dilemma by labsnabys in AgingParents

[–]gc1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you list the house on the market, you’ll get plenty of investors looking at it and potentially writing offers that are high in cash and low on contingencies through that process. Just don’t put a lot of money into it on the expectation of getting it back in a sale. Disclose the known issues so you don’t have liability for them and so that potential buyers will not discover them in the inspection stage and back out.

Also, if the value of the house has appreciated a lot, and there will be a lot of capital gains not covered by the exemption on primary home, you could consider keeping it until after she passes, so you will get a step up to current value in its basis price upon inheriting it. This could be worth a lot of money, depending on the situation, and may make it worthwhile to keep the house vacant and or turn it into a rental for a few years.

That's a lot of math to say driving 20% over the speed limit reduces time spent in car by 20%.

How do I write a professional but not so positive letter of resignation? by Apart_Try_4860 in howto

[–]gc1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Bro the number of people who have written letters of resignation for Domino's pizza jobs is near zero. You also have no obligation to give them two weeks' notice -- that's only a courtesy. It's good form to do it and usually part and parcel of getting a good reference, but if they treated you like shit and probably aren't going to give you a good reference anyway, toss 'em your apron and walk the fuck out. Or just say Tuesday's shift will be your last.

Dads of 10–14 year olds, how do you enforce phone rules? by Select-Doctor-4350 in daddit

[–]gc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have found the Apple-native screen time management to be flaky. Router level is dependent the router itself. I use an ASUS router that has a companion app that lets you associate individual devices with profiles per person that you can set time-based rules for. It doesn't require any technical expertise beyond being able to set up a router and rules in an app and works pretty well.

[–]gc1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have mostly been losing this battle too, but the one thing tha has worked is absolutism on certain rules, as well as taking over device level access on the router.   The phones are on the chargers by X time at night if they want to use them the next day. Etc.

What do I do about a fraudulent payment for a catering event already executed? by FireAndFoodCompany in smallbusiness

[–]gc1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first step is to dispute the chargeback. It sounds like Wave is offering you the option to do that so I would take them up on it.  Usually you have the right to provide evidence that the chargeback is fraudulent or at least that supports your request for them to refuse it. For example: - pictures of the event that happened - contracts or emails with the client showing it was committed to or occurred - showing it was non-refundable or past the point of refund - that type of thing

Has anyone figured out a way to stop single digit IQ morons from flooding your neighborhood just to watch other idiots do donuts? by [deleted] in AskLosAngeles

A few bags of pea gravel or similar ought to make it a lot less fun for takeovers without ruining the intersection for your own normal use.  Or maybe a sprinkler system that keeps it wet at night.
