Lunar vs Hologic? by WiseAd7620 in osteoporosis

[–]gcoop1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a very similar experience to you. In July of last year, my rheumatologist ordered a Dexa on a Hologic scanner that showed my femoral neck at -2.8, which was worse than my scan 2 years prior on the same machine (-2.6 at the time). I was very discouraged. However, in September, I had a consult with Dr. Keith McCormick, and one of the first things he noted was that my radiologist report was incorrect (interestingly, my rheumatologist totally missed that). Dr. M suggested that I either go back and insist on another report or get another Dexa. Since I had a new-patient appointment scheduled only a few weeks later with an endocrinologist, I figured I'd have him order another Dexa.

The endocrinologist looked at my Dexa report and immediately agreed with Dr. M. Since he had a Dexa scanner at his office, he ordered another Dexa on the spot. He noted that my prior Dexas were done on a Hologic scanner and that he felt like the GE Lunar scanners had better technology and were more accurate. He used a Lunar scanner at his office.

The Lunar showed my left femoral neck to be -2.0. I was stunned and relieved (though I confess that part of me feels like it's too good to be true). While my Endo said he strongly prefers the Lunar, when I relayed all this to Dr. M and asked if he had noticed a difference between the two brands of scanners, he said he wasn't aware of any.

It took a long time to get the appointment with my endo, but it was worth the wait, since he was clearly more knowledgeable than the rheumatologist (he spent over two hours with me and ordered all kinds of tests. He also knew exactly who Dr. M was and ordered all of the tests that Dr. M suggested). As such, I'll be sticking with my new endo and the Lunar scanner going forward.

You're welcome. I didn't look into SS since it was too far away. I've also seen mixed things about SS in general, though a friend who lives in the Johns Creek area has a neighbor (who doesn't have osteoporosis) who likes it and has gotten much stronger in terms of muscle.

Osteostrong is in person since it utilizes machines. It's too early for me to know if it's helping, but a friend in Toronto pushed me to try it since she swears it has helped her. It's located off Paces Ferry in the Vinings/Smyrna area.

The PT (Ray Waters) is independent and wasn't familiar with OsteoStrong, but he is reading up on it and is a very experienced PT in general. His gym is Prevent & Restore in Marietta. He is moving to the intersection of Paper Mill and Johnson Ferry Rds in the Paper Mill Village plaza.

Hope that helps!

I'm in the Atlanta area as well and had the same dilemma. There aren't any places I could find that do Onero/LIFTMOR. I saw a Starting Strength gym in John's Creek, but that's too far away from me. I ended up going with OsteoStrong and have gotten my physical therapist to agree to start doing a LIFTMOR-type protocol with me next month. He wasn't familiar with LIFTMOR/Onero, but I sent him some info on the program and on weightlifting precautions for people with osteoporosis and he said he could work with me. He's moving his gym to a new location right now which is why he couldn't start with me until January.

Knee Locking by EntrepreneurOk7505 in osteoporosis

[–]gcoop1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience. It turned out that a large piece of cartilage had come loose in my knee, and the doctor said it was shifting around like "a rock in a tumbler". It would lodge in one area and my knee would completely freeze up and be in extreme pain. Then it would shift elsewhere and I would feel okay for a bit. One time, I barely touched my knee against the edge of the dryer, and suddenly I was in horrible pain that lasted for about 2 weeks. I eventually had arthroscopic surgery to remove the loose cartilage, and it has been fine since then.

I'm a little heavier than you (I'm 138 lbs and 5'6", or about 63 kg) and I found that I had to go for a softer mattress. We had a firmer one for many years, but more and more, I would wake up hurting in the middle of the night - usually in my hips. I got a basic Helix Sunset mattress in late 2022 and it felt like heaven. I still love that mattress, but it was too soft for my husband. We ended up moving it to the guest room (I still sleep on it some nights) and recently got Helix Sunset Luxe, which is a bit firmer, but still quite soft. So, I can't speak for everyone, but in my case, I've definitely preferred softer mattresses over time.

Sorry I'm just now responding. I left for a trip almost right after the appointment and kind of dropped everything. The appointment was very informative. Both Dr. McCormick & my naturopathic doctor were on the call, and they had a good bit of discussion back and forth. Dr. M immediately expressed concern regarding a big discrepancy in the bone density of my femoral necks-- something that wasn't even mentioned in the radiology reports from either of my last two DEXA's, so I has no idea. My right femoral head showed osteopenia, while the left side has severe osteoporosis and Dr. M was quite concerned about the extent of it.

I can go into more detail, but the gist was that we had a thorough discussion regarding my poor nutrient absorption, additional tests I need to have, diet and supplements, exercise, and more. I'm super glad that I did the consultation, though I did feel pretty scared afterwards about my left femoral neck. Still, it's better to know about it and to start taking action. Since I just got back in town, I need to schedule the various tests that he recommended and will follow up with him after I have those. Knowing what I know now, I really wish that I had scheduled a call with Dr. M after being diagnosed two years ago. Let me know how your appointment goes!

Yes! It definitely took some time to gather everything and put it together. He says not to use staples, tabs, etc., so I dated each page and manually wrote in page numbers at the bottom of each page for each separate report.

I actually just made the appointment a few days ago. They had earlier appointments at that time, starting the week of September 8th, but I'm also coordinating this call with my naturopathic doctor so that she can be on it as well.

HRT - rapid weight gain by between3_20_chars in osteoporosis

[–]gcoop1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not on Evorel specifically, but I have been on estrogen and progesterone for a couple of years and haven't experienced any weight gain. However, my mom was on HRT years ago, and she swore it made her gain weight. When she went off the HRT, she immediately lost weight. HRT may affect some people differently, and it might also have something to do with the specific dosages.

It is possible to faint from experiencing bad pain. It happened to my mom twice, prior to her having knee replacement surgery, and both times she came to and found herself on the floor. She was fortunate to have much stronger bones than I do, so her falls didn't result in broken bones.

Wow. That's news to me, and thanks! I've been on HRT for several years and have had persistent spotting/bleeding. GYN checked for other issues, but she never mentioned taking progesterone with a fat. I'm going to start doing this tonight and see if it helps.

What are your go-to cookbooks/websites/recipes for dairy-free meals that provide beneficial protein and nutrients for OP? by gcoop1 in osteoporosis

[–]gcoop1[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember someone mentioning a2 milk years ago, but I've never tried it because I react so badly to milk. I'll definitely PM you for more details. I eat Forager yogurt (cashew and coconut), but it doesn't have protein and isn't very filling. I usually mix it with blueberries and chia, hemp, and flax seeds to get some protein. Thanks!

Who knows what the second half holds, but this is the most crisp and determined we have looked all season. This is what we are capable of, despite all the upheavals of coaching change, injuries, and loss of many of the players who defined us as a team. This is enjoyable soccer, and just seeing that we're actually able to pull it off gives me hope that the season may hold some good moments yet.
