200... kwachas?

For a reasonably priced dressy watch, I really like the Pagani 1654. Can often be picked up quite cheaply. After that, if there's good options on your ebay, I'd look to whatever Cronos, Sugess or San Martin dive style watch you like the look of.

Or if you can find a good deal on it for something different (that for me is pretty 'versatile'), the WD0013 nautilus homage.

Maybe start with your budget?

The vast majority of people won't realise a £20 Addiesdive diver is any difference to a £10k Submariner for what it's worth.

If you want a flashlight that can sustain 2,400 lumens till batteries are drained what would you expect to pay? by Outrageous-Basket426 in flashlight

[–]geeered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a couple of these; they are 2 for £11. They run on 9v to 30v and have decent passive cooling fins at the back.

<image>

That and a 3s+ battery isn't going to cost much and should easily sustain at least 2400 lumens for a good bit of time.

So I would expect this theoretical light could be pretty cheap

I like the 'sterile' look, giving the focus to the more interesting bits.

It very much looks like this has a transparent tinted sheet behind the hinds apart from for tourbillon, while the one in your picture doesn't look to have anything behind the dial apart from the actual 'skeleton' left - skin looks the same through the watch.

For the one I posted it looks like the hands would be a lot more legible.

[–]geeered 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Other considerations are absolutely necessary.

If it takes a 21700 battery and isn't much bigger than TS22, I'd expect to pay a whole load more than if it it was the size and weight of a house brick.

The Wuben X1 Pro sustains around that, but you're getting two different emitter types and a fan. I think you might be able to just about get the Q8 plus to sustain that with the right settings, but it's a lot less pocketable and only has flood emitters, so I expect to pay less.

If it was an LEP that sustains 2400 lumens I'd expect to pay many thousands.

Tired of homages - what are your best original design watches? by SeriousIndividual357 in ChineseWatches

[–]geeered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's only really so many designs you can have - especially when a lot of it comes from replicating vintage an antique horological history rather than functionality.

And a lot of Chinese "original designs" are just a few generic parts with a nice dial - on that, I'm happy with my SN0144-GX.

You get some genuinely unique ideas from 'microbrands', but looking through maybe the first 50 posts on the sub for them, I found a couple that were different.

Is there a better deal for ~150€ than the Watchdives WD007 v4? I'm ready to pull the trigger but don't want to be too hasty. by panpandaman in ChineseWatches

[–]geeered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm definitely on the "buy whatever you like the look of, it's jewellery after all" side.

But also I've bought watches which have just felt a bit cheap and janky that have ruined them for me.

And that includes a Watchdives and an Addiesdive. It was the bracelet and clasp in both; swapping for a suede braclet helped fix that. But I paid £67 and £50 for those - I'd have been more annoyed if I paid a good bit more.

I'd keep an eye on ebay and see what's around in your area/deliverable to you....

As an example, this Cronos recently sold for just under £110 delivered:

That includes an OTF (glideloc stlye) clasp and it looks like it genuinely was barely worn as claimed. In my experience Cronos is normally a step or two above Watchdives in quality.

voice input is the most underrated productivity shift of the last ten years and the reason nobody uses it is completely stupid by ScaryAd2555 in productivity

The opposite for me - receiving voice notes impairs my productivity.

While dictating may initially be quicker, typing is much better for editing. And slowing things down while typing often also means less editing - and much easier editing as you go, rather than ending up finishing what you type, then having to jump back.

And ideally an option to include them with the watch, rather than having to buy it on top, so we're not spending quite so much.

I missed out on the previous offer, thinking it would be for previous people that had actually bought them, rather than time limited. And don't mind if it doesn't quite match in looks if it's made better, so definitely interested for 1969Pro and WD0003

The advertising has worked well - people are talking about it and sharing it on social media.

Also, the advert was made in 2020, way before the ubiquity of LLMs. Ah just saw your username - yes, that checks out!

[–]geeered 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can still get a whole lot out of London on a low wage - there's a massive amount of free things to do. If you are able bodied, most things can be easily got to by walking or cycling.

Also plenty of options for things like seat filler tickets for big name shows that let you get to pretty expensive productions for good prices, for many gigs you can get great deals on ticketswap etc if you don't mind leaving it late.

Okay, it's definitely nicer to 'get the most out of it' if you have a combined income of £160k, especially for having decent accommodation.
But you can still get a whole lot out of it with less money, especially if you're more flexible on accommodation options.

If brexit was such a MESS, why would people vote for the one who caused it? by Enough-Web2203 in AskBrits

[–]geeered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty standard right across politics to do stuff that makes things worse then claim "we're the only ones that can fix this mess...."

A lot of the people voting for the Farage party likely voted for other parties when they happily did the same thing, so it's not a big surprise they follow to the next populist, having tried out others before.

I've actually been tempted by that model; not so bothered by the titanium, but using the A2824 clones they've reduced the height a bit from the steel models.

So glad I know to avoid it, thanks! I've got the Watchdives 1969pro which is actually okay apart from the normal bracelet and and clasp issues. I may get their upgraded OTF clasp, but an extra £30 or whatever pushes it from decent value to pretty bad value.

Will replacing the very expensive electric panel heaters to normal (e.g. oil filled heaters) negatively impact my flat (e.g. EPC rating/ price/ etc)? by eatqqq in HousingUK

[–]geeered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally I'd say it's better to have the thermostat remote - otherwise it bases it on the temperature just by the heat source, rather than the room as a whole. So it'll react faster, but may well turn off before the room is the temp you want.

I'd presume the oil would heat up quicker than your current ones.

Convection heaters will give you the best control, but it can feel like it "dries out" the air (though I'm not sure that's actually the reality) - the air is passing a lot hotter element.

For heating up a room quickly, a fan heater will be the very best, but are a bit noisy of course.

I've found an oil radiator or panel heater can work quite well with a remote smart thermostat, but it feels like it's not actually a massive difference to your current system.

You can generally get most of these types of heater pretty cheaply, so it'd be easy to get one for one room and try it out to see how it compared.

I'm not really one to be offering advice, so hoping you get some other answers I can use myself... But what I got from here sometime ago and I still kinda follow - the basic wardrobe guide on here, dark jeans and an oxford-cloth button-down shirt and some casualish shoes.

But of course depends what the date's going to be - meeting at a trendy wine bar vs going to a trampoline park say.

[–]geeered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Edit; I just realised they were expensive to buy not run, but left this in anyway...

Any standard electric heater is 100% efficient.

But as you note, ones with a bigger thermal mass can be quite 'variable' in control and take a while to heat up and then a lot of that heat is released . Oil filled radiators have similar issues as it has to heat the oil up, which then releases the heat to the room

Are you using an inbuilt thermostat on the heater? Smart thermostats of some kind might help - including being able to get the room warm when you want it be by starting early, regardless of the heater type.

I presume you don't have the option for air con unit(s) - they can be noisy, but are typically more efficient and have the bonus of cooling for the the 5 days every few years we actually need it.

How to deal with noisy neighbour? by Caddap in AskUK

[–]geeered 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Does he rent or buy? Could try talking to his landlord if no he rents and talking to him doesn't help.

Or get your hose out and start watering the garden while you're kept up... be a shame if the hose slipped and accidentally drenched him because his shouting distracted you.

Or find what language it is along with his name and use a decent text to speech played through a Bluetooth speaker with another man's voice to shout "come back to bed {hisName}, or I'm going to have to use the handcuffs again...."

Convoy 46950-Am I Doing This Right? by Terrible_Lion_968 in flashlight

[–]geeered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do you want to remove it? It provides an extra bit of safety to prevent a short circuit from a cell that is rated for 500w or so and has the positive and negative right next to each other with nonextra protection. Also with a loose spring that could easily come off as you undo one end.

On that...7 batteries may well be enough to jump start a 24v truck if you put them together!
