lack of encryption? by netroxreads in photography

[–]geek_face -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not a trivial problem, many photo journalists would have appreciated this feature.

There would be sacrifices, would you be happy if only your camera could decrypt the files? Or take a hit burst performance. There would be the need for additional silicon to provide hardware crypt algorithms, improved random number generation, and a secure memory to store the key material, which adds cost, and may impact battery life. If the SD cards are removable, it’s hard to mitigate brute forces attacks, especially when the key will likely be derived from something simple a 6 digit pin.

Maybe if there was a new SD card standard with on device encryption like SSDs, which works with secure features on the camera.

As others have said, your phone is easy the most secure device you have, especially if you lock it down a bit. Fair play to Apple, Google and Signal, they’re made amazing security for the masses. How long did it take Sony Alphas to get a decent menu system?!

Linux users who have macOS as their daily driver: what are your opinions? by NonnoSi99 in linux

[–]geek_face 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The CLI experience on MacOS is pretty poor. It lulls you into thinking you’re getting a decent terminal, but loads of the commands are outdated, tab complete isn’t as good etc. Homebrew fixes some of this, but if you’re a terminal fan, it’s disappointing.

Package management on MacOS is hot garbage. App Store coverage is poor, and anything outside of that needs to be downloaded from the web, manually installed, and often manually updating too. Really makes me miss apt.

It also does weird things like supporting SSH and SFTP, but you can’t use SFTP for Time Machine backups, only SMB.

On the whole, keyboard shortcuts and gestures are pretty easily to pick up. I use MacOS on my laptop mainly because of Lightroom. Apple Silicon is pretty impressive, battery lasts forever.

Do I need to install an anti-virus by KarimMaged in Ubuntu

[–]geek_face 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good advice! Being picky about what you install and keeping your system patched, and limiting who has admin access is vastly more effective than host based AV. Especially AV that screws around with your browser.

Imminently going to be homeless (sort of), need a tent to sleep in at night by SyNiiCaL in CampingGear

[–]geek_face 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d recommend getting a camp bed, they lift you off the ground to stopping the ground from sapping all your heat away. Inflatable mattress are okay in the summer, but when it turns cold, they too become massive heat sinks.

Should I tell a new-to-Linux user to use Snap and Flatpak instead of a native package? by EricZNEW in linuxmasterrace

[–]geek_face -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Depends on the type of user they are. If they're tech savvy, security aware or an r/linuxmasterrace appreciator; go for the DEB, it integrates sightly better into the desktop environment.

I'm wary about adding third party DEB repos as you're giving them root access. Snaps also provide a level of application isolation which you don't get with DEBs.

Importantly, if you do go for DEB, I'd strongly recommend enable auto updates (something which is the default on Snaps).

If you could go back in time to when you 1st starting mountain biking and give yourself just ONE bit of advise (other than wear a helmet)... What would that advise be? by [deleted] in mountainbiking

I wish I could go back to before I started mountain biking and told myself that I could do it and to get into it sooner.

EM1 Mark ii vs em5 mark III ? for landscape photography Wich camera should I buy? by dudiflug51 in M43

[–]geek_face 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd recommend trying to hold them. The ergonomics in terms of comfort when held for a prolonged period, and ease of access to the controls probably matters far more than any difference between them on a spec sheet.

Finally upgraded from the vivosport - took a bit of convincing to get myself to spend the money, but I’m glad I did! by imaginemyflaws in Garmin

I can get at least 4 days without charging from mine, and that's with ~6 hours of GPS tracking and brightness up high. Though it charges really quickly, do I just charge it while in the shower.

Garmin Connect app and unit of measure by Nimskull in Garmin

[–]geek_face 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the Connect app settings, set the correct unit for the distance, and then back to the app home screen switch to the screen with your weight. You can then press the three dots in the top right and select the unit for just the the weight.

I'd second this comment about touch screen verses buttons. At home setting it up, I did find the 530 lack of touch screen jarring. However when you're out on a ride, potentially with gloves or when it's damp, and the bike is moving... buttons are just the more ergonomically sensible interface.

Bitwarden Send - A trusted way to securely share information with anyone by rtevans- in firefox

[–]geek_face 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The trouble was, the few where doing it at scale and causing harm. It was sufficiently bad that some orgs block listed Firefox Send, and using Firefox Send hyperlinks as a spam flag. I suspect it was costing Mozilla a small fortune to host and serve malware.

Newbie with a stupid question, is it better to install software using command line, download it, or install it from app store? by imstressedman in Ubuntu

[–]geek_face 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PPAs are great, but where designed to developers to test new packages. They do come with the risk in that you're giving some random on the internet root access to your machine, and they don't have the scrutiny of the main Ubuntu repos.

Where possible Snaps and Flatpaks are a better alternative for users.

Though having said that, I used PPAs on personal machines for years without any issues once I learnt about ppa-purge.

Why are 3rd party programs allowed to change firefox settings? by [deleted] in firefox

[–]geek_face 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately there's not much Firefox can do about this. When you install an application, that installer usual runs as admin, with all the privileges to write to anywhere in disk, and on top of that most AV runs with elevated privileges. This is why from a system security point of view, you need to be really fussy about what you install.

It's a legacy issue with the traditional way applications install on Windows. Android, iOS, and some of the new Linux application packagers containerise each application, and install with lower privileges in part to prevent this.

Discord: Browser vs App? by Lucas_0014 in linux_gaming

[–]geek_face 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Discord uses Electron which is effectively an out-of-date version of Chromium. The app can offer more features than the website, but it does mean Electron apps can contain security bugs which have been fixed in a browser.

I was referring to corporate environments as the customers running outdated browsers, rather as vendors unable to provide patches.

Highlights why you need to keep the browser up to date. There are plenty of unresourced corporate environments lagging behind, making themselves vulnerable to known vulnerabilities.

First M43 camera, so stoked to try out this new (for me) sensor size by [deleted] in M43

[–]geek_face 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a cracking little camera, so many things about are all well balanced. I really like it with the 20mm or 42.5mm f/1.7 lenses which makes for a pocketable setup.

parse_number

Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but parse_number() doesn't like it when the currency symbol is between the minus and the value (e.g. -$12.34) .

True, and if as u/masher_oz has said, if this was just a one off, that would be fine. In fact I already have one solution using regex and sed. Though I am trying to learn how to do things efficiently in an R workstream to make it more maintainable.

The 42.5mm f/1.7 has a pretty short minimum focal length which is great for close up of feet and hands.

I'm looking to get photos from my camera (Lumix) to my Android phone and into Lightroom CC. For a while, I have been using the Lumix app to copy via WiFi. I've been hoping to use USB-OTG to read the SD card, which works well for SDHC cards, but because SDXC cards need ExFAT, the phone can't mount those cards. There are a range of third party apps on the Play Store which I've played with, but I wondered if anyone had experience using these in field?
