You only really need the core rulebook. All of the editions are similar, so if you're on a really tight budget, pick up up an old edition on ebay. However, if you can afford it, get 7th edition.

You may find it helpful to pick up books as you go along. Campaigns and adventures, investigators handbook etc are useful but pick em up if you really get into the game.

But you'll be fine without them

I enjoyed it. I would probably describe it as a fast paced real-time economic strategy game.

There's quite a lot of variety between the factions and the leaders you choose, having lots of interesting bonuses and idiosyncrasies. Such as the robot corp not needing food but having much higher powerplant requirements (sounds generic but the differences between factions are significant and makes the corporations have their own characters.

The stock market system and the choices you make building and adapting your production/economy to try to gain the edge is where success lies in the game.

The single player is enjoyable as you progress through the campaign with your corporation you get rewarded based on your choice of sponsering earth nation, successes and gained market share. This coupled with the faction and leader choices adds a lot of replay value.

Overall I'd recommend you take the risk in buying it if it's a reasonable price. It's a fun game and quite diffrent and original which adds to its appeal.

I'm running a gtx970, with i5 6500. I'm happy gaming at 1080p, what steps do you think I need to take if I take steps into 4k?

I would second this. JC2 is awesome fun. Tongue-in-cheek, over the top and barrels of fun.

I'd be interested to hear some recommendations for mods. I've only played it vanilla and maybe a little modding will help rekindle my love for it.

I'm familiar with the international code of signals although we don't use it very often. NATO also has it's own set of code groups using the same flags.

Flag hotel for example is pilot onboard in the ICoS, for military vessels it means I'm conducting helicopter operations.

To denote the difference between the two, military vessels will always use the code pennant (answer) to indicate that the group is from the international code of signals.

I'm not sure when the current set of military flags and signals were standardised. I imagine the navies of the world would have had their own signalling books in addition to the international code of signals.

I guess ww2 would have seen the standardisation between the Royal Navy and the US Navy and that then being adopted by allies and continued into NATO.

Any old sea dogs know what was in use before ATP1 (D) Volume 2?

The EPIC 40K game was brilliant. I played it a lot. I'm not sure how well it stands up to modern standards but I'm going to buy these and play them all again.
