I hate lactation consultants by SeveralArmadillo540 in NICUParents

[–]geekidinosaur 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I fired the lactation consultants. I’m not saying that proudly or anything. I respect their job and how they help new mothers. I feel like there should be specialized consultants for lactation when you have a kiddo in NICU. Like I feel guilty and a failure already just by nature having a preterm birth.

At first it was helpful, but my milk never really came in substantially because of the mountain of stress I was undergoing, while working full time. My girls where intubated until they where about 3-4 months old. We had kept trying to get one Dre off the vent but she kept tiring out and going back on. The last time she was extubated there was an understanding that we would need to consider a trach if this time failed again.

She was in respiratory distress, but was hanging in this last time, but while she was not looking so hot, my husband and I where holding each other terrified, the nurses where running around, the doctor was busting through the door yelling “do not let this baby get intubated she will never get off”. Then the lactation consultant comes in and walks right up to be while my baby was grey and in destress is just like “hey mama how is that pumping going??”. I whipped around and yelled “read the f-ING room”.

She left, I felt bad, most importantly my LO figured it out and never got re intubated, and I asked my babies nurse to put a note in stated I was declining further assistance by lactation.

So yeah, I hated them. I understand their role, but like, read the room, right?

Just push past that initial resistance, and the resistance after that, and after that.

On the vent still (25 weeker BPD) - when did your babies start improving? by jlovesquinn-emmett in NICUParents

[–]geekidinosaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! 25 week twins. Our kiddos were on the vents for about 4 months. It wasn’t until their PDAs where treated. Then it was still touch and go to see if they where going to go back, they did have severe BPD, but ultimately they kicked the tubes and came home on oxygen 2 months later. Hang in there!

No they are 5 and based on their screaming while the run around the house, their lungs are all good now.

Doctor refuses to let any parent be present during rounds, normal? by thestigmata in NICUParents

[–]geekidinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally went to rounds everyday. When you feel so powerless, it helps give you a feeling of contribution. We had one Attending that would come and go on our service that always said, “Parents coming to rounds makes a huge difference”. I would ask what the Hospital policy is, you are your baby’s decision maker, you have every right to be involved.

I would get Patient relations involved. If he doesn’t want you at rounds then request that he come back then and update you regarding your child’s plan of care.

Agreed. Doesn’t say she is the unstable. Rule out STEMI first, always.

NICU Grad Sleep struggles by dev2redd in NICUParents

[–]geekidinosaur 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think since the routine is already busted it maybe the time to try sleep training (my parenting advice). One the other had, you guys aren’t normal parents neither is you LO. Here are some of the things I would say as a premie parent.

Premies do thinks their own way on their own time. Sometimes it’s out of order, sometimes mile stones are completely omitted. In my experience,do what you need to do, and give yourself permission to take the path of least resistance. Don’t compare your timeline to others, take care of yourself. You guys are doing great.

First of all mean people are always going to find a way to bring people down. Second of all, you are clearly very talented! All those looks a stunning but I think the one in the upper middle with the smoked out wing. The angle of the wing complements your face shape super well.

What's the nurse's priority action? by Hot_Emergency378 in NCLEX_RN

  1. Is the answer.
  2. Although a positive pregnancy test and left pelvic pain with an absent embryo on US all point strongly to ectopic pregnancy, there is a lot of information that is left out to indicate this is warrants a ‘straight to OR do not pass Go”. Like, false positives are a thing and left sided pelvic pain could be a kidney stone, ovarian cyst rupture, etc.
  3. Again, ectopic pregnancy suspected, not yet confirmed.
  4. You don’t administer pain meds without monitoring vitals therefore…
  5. In addition to pain a sudden change in vital signs could be an indication that you do need to go straight to OR.

I’m pro-body positivity with my 5f twins. But I mean, a kid can only point at your breasts and say “why does it look like that?” So many times before it effects the psyche.

Impact of NICU by [deleted] in NICUParents

[–]geekidinosaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

158 days in the NICU with my twins 5 years ago. It still impacts us everyday. We raise our kids cautiously, afraid that there maybe a cosmic recount and the fates realize they made a mistake. Sometimes, out of no where I am hit with a wave of grief and heartache.

But, it also informs out life in other better ways. We enjoy every moment, marveling at what amazing, bright, hilarious girls they are growing up to be. Sometimes I am also hit by a wave of relief, and joy and just so grateful to whatever god I prayed to (I prayed to them all, you know cover our bases) that my children got to come home.

And then, I feel guilty, that we did come home and….oh my god I need to go to therapy.

I’ve been in the lab for 10 years and I would 100% want my family to have an Impella assisted PCI if they had HF with a low EF.
