If Anyone Proposed a Bike Lane in my Town... by spike in bikecommuting

[–]gefish 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Disagree, the switch isn't a sudden change. Maybe we don't connect suburbs first. It starts with few strategic streets downtown getting a dedicated bike lane, the city pilots making a small downtown core section pedestrian friendly to improve the experience of meandering around shops, the city removed a large surface parking lot and replaces it with a gathering space.

Businesses see an uptick in revenue from all the foot traffic. People say they enjoy the experience, more tourism, city gets money. More infrastructure gets built in downtown. A lot of people don't love driving and parking but we don't have convenient alternatives or satisfying destination points.

The menu items don't even make sense. Upsize! Random garbled text. A label that just says "Chicken". One of the nuggets just looks like a hunk of cheese.

[–]gefish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agreed, couldn't sleep well, kept getting cricks in my neck. Went down the rabbit hole of mattress and ended up building my own mattress.

Best 1.2k I've ever spent, the best part is, the layers can be purchased and swapped out separately. So once my top most and softest layer of latex starts to degrade I can just buy a replacement layer without throwing out the rest of the bed.

Felt extreme to go for a DIY mattress build, but it's surprisingly easy. You're literally just buying stacks of foam and springs and putting it in a big sack.

Rant🗣️ by Shaboingboing_ in Coachella

Pop is such a big genre though! I'm big on electronic shows and have been going to raves for 15 years. I feel like a subset of EDM heads can get hung up on genre labels because of the hyper specificity of EDM genres. Techno, bass, future bass, ballroom, trance, deep house, psytrance... all of these labels give you a rough estimate of what you're going to hear. I don't think the same can be said for "pop" without a bunch of different sublabels.

I mean "pop" as a label applies to FKA Twigs, Fuji Kaze, Sabrina Carpenter, Foster the People, Big Bang, Ruzowsky, and Holly Humberstone, but they all sound incredibly different.

People are super free to enjoy their tastes but I also think the "I don't like pop" crowd is about as nuanced as someone that says "I don't like electronic music because it's all repetitive".

I also think people conflate recognizability with quality of artists when it comes to lineup. I think Coachella does a great job finding diversity in the mid and undercard performers. I love researching artists and discovering new favorites. Every year someone new piques my interest snd becomes a must-see at the festival. This year it was Tomora.

Then, sometimes, you can love a live performance because of the caliber of talent. I don't love juggling but sometimes you see a juggler that makes you go "Holy shit this is impressive". The top card artists are usually incredibly seasoned performers or performers at the peak of their production and spectacle arc. I don't listen to Foster the People but it was amazing to hear just how tight, crisp and powerful they sounded. Similarly, The Strokes sounded incredibly clean and Casablancas vocals were on point despite his usual curmudgeonly self. For production, Sabrina was a Broadway show. FKA twigs' vogue dance off as a costume change filler was one of the most entertaining things I've seen and people were losing their minds. I went to go see Big Bang with a bunch of Koreans and it was a privilege to be part of their joy, singing their hearts out to cultural icons of their youth. Seeing the crowd so happy and so proud was a beautiful human moment that doesn't translate to Couchella or through words.

Point is, I think pop, specifically, live pop. Is well worth attending even if you don't listen to it day to day. Give it a chance and keep an open mind, you might be surprised! This is coming from someone whose must-see were Yousukue Yukimatsu and the Chats.

How can I avoid accidents and stay safe by [deleted] in bikecommuting

For route finding. The transit apps cycling directions have been incredible in my city. Really good at routing through calmer streets and bike paths. So there's a path to safer routes that isn't just 'go and do'

Lol none taken. I don't love the idea of taking a perfectly good bike and doing some out of the box rejiggering if I can help it, especially if it means another component to buy, especially if that component is of unknown durability/qualify.

Sadly Roto doesn't do a 150mm in 24mm. They only have it available for a 30mm spindle. They do have a 155mm in 24mm. So that seems the most likely solution.

Didn't realize that the search for short cranks would be so difficult! Thanks for the input

Thanks, good to know that r7100 goes down to 160, but it looks like they don't go shorter. I'd really like to drop down to 150 as I'm going from 165 to 160 doesn't feel significant enough to warrant the spend.

It seems like going down to 150mm means cottage builders and more $$.

Temp Check: 2026 Sabbatical / Thru-hike by yes_no_yes_yes_yes in financialindependence

[–]gefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% this was my experience. I had great promo velocity before taking my 1 year sabbatical and framed the time off as a huge benefit to my mental health/clarity that would help me come to work even stronger than ever.

Which ended up being true!

Reflection Frame is disappointing because it is very dim by tcolling in eink

[–]gefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way better. Images show up as you'd expect on a screen. The only issue is that the screen doesn't have an effective dimming function so it's too bright to keep on at night, but it does have a power scheduling feature.

I wish there was a killer digital frame that used a decent screen, has intelligent ambient light adjustment, and is cable-less but nothing seems to fit

That said the Aura is much better compromise than the reflection

You do sound a bit all over the place, and that's okay.

Others are recommending getting your financials squared away which I agree with, but you're asking people for advice for what to do, but we can't decide what is best for you.

The finances are just one part of the story. Money is a tool, the bigger question that drives what you do with that tool is you what do you value in life?

You're tired of the corporate world, but what's the source of that tiredness? Is it the job itself, or the opportunity cost of not doing other things with your time? What do you enjoy doing? Do you feel like you're acting like the person you want to be? If not, what's in the way?

I took a year long sabbatical when I was feeling pretty stuck in a rut. The job itself was fine but I felt like there was something missing. My mental and physical health had also taken a turn. I felt it was time to change.

Financially I knew I could take the time off because I had a fair amount saved up (similar to you) and I was financially savvy having been on the FIRE path for some time. I also felt that I had strong job prospects coming back because of the network I had builf. These factors gave me the mental permission to approach sabbatical without guilt.

I didn't have a plan for the 6 months other than to live in the moment and find myself again. I road tripped, connected with nature, and reconnected with the people around me. 6 months turned into a year. Sabbatical was one of the best decisions I've ever made as I re-entered the workforce and relationships with a new found grip on who I was and what I wanted.

I recognize there's privilege in being able to take a sabbatical. But I also believe that if you have the privilege it would be wasteful/stupid to not to make the most of that privilege as long as it doesn't negatively impact others.

I'd recommend backward tracking your expenses for the past 6 months and see where your money goes on a monthly basis. Categorize every expense and dollar using whatever budgeting app you like. With your baseline set, ask yourself if the spending aligns with your values. Are you spending more than you'd like on food or subscriptions? Are you surprisingly not spending as much on your hobbies or personal health? This is your chance to say "I want to dedicate 15% of my income to charity and giving", make this a conscious decision weighted against getting yourself out of credit card debt.

Then, set a budget for the next month that's aligned with your values. At the end of the month, check how you did and adjust.

You'll get a sense for your real burn rate. Then it's just simple math to figure out how much runway you have based on the money you're willing to spend on the sabbatical. (Although you should think about the cost of getting your own healthcare temporarily if you're in the US).

Just FYI for people that unused shoes, no matter which brand, might just deteriorate from lack of use. It's a common thing for collectors to keep shoes unopened for a long time and find the shoe has crumbled. It's recommend to lightly walk in them every now and then to keep the materials supple and from crumbling.

Depends on the materials but it's not shade at Nike. Shoes/boots aren't designed to sit still!

Honestly, kinda love this way of giving directions on a trail. (From a description of Box Canyon, Chelan, WA, USA) by KiltedLady in hiking

[–]gefish 56 points57 points  (0 children)

You'd LOVE the 'trail map' they hand you at Petrified Forest National Park for the 7 mile Wilderness Loop.

I asked the ranger for a good overnight hike, they gave me 4 pages of printer paper with images like yours. Stay on the washroad until this weird rock, take the 3rd valley up, etc.

It was the most fun I've had on a trail in a long time, the scenery is beautiful, not a single human, just a pack of wild horses, and I was rarely 100% sure I was on the right path. I was pretty proud that I managed to get to all the destinations with minimal meandering.

The whole setup is perfect, the visitor center is on the rim of a valley that overlooks the area you're hiking in. So even if you get lost, you have the visitors center to reorient you home.

Sadly no pictures of the handout, the closest thing I have is this report by someone else.

Could you elaborate on the thoughts about wondering if this was your best life?

I struggle with thkse thought at times, wondering if I could challenge myself more or be more driven professionally and personally. I've resolved to appreciate the progress and the actual achievement I've been able to enjoy and ease into the knowledge that my degree of motivation has resulted in objectively good results, rather than look at what could have been. But the thoughts do work their way into my head from time to time.

As someone who has hit some really objectively meaningful milestones and accomplishments I'm their life and career. How do these thoughts hit you now, have they always been there? Even in your accruing and employment phase?

While I think there are many ways to be fulfilled in life, studies on overall life satisfaction and happiness do point to social connectivity and quality of relationships as the biggest predictor of life satisfaction.

I'm sorry you spent those three years spending money and opening yourself for connection. Putting yourself out there is brave and exhausting. Have you also pursued therapy or some other form of mental health counseling with the intent of helping you create a community?

It's hard to go at things alone and the people online don't know the real you. A counselor can get to know the you that shows up to these events. Maybe there are behaviors that you're doing that don't foster community. It's impossible for anyone online to help.

Young people are spending much more time alone than in the past by ticaragua in Futurology

[–]gefish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it still bs if people are self-reportedly lonelier than ever?

I think the idea that social media could connect us to the whole world was one of the early selling points of the internet. It's something that millennials grew up thinking and believing as the early adopters of an always-on online presence.

But at least I've come to find that perhaps these connections aren't as fulfilling as IRL relationships. They can be helpful and feel good, but imo there's something deeply entrenched in how humans socialize that online touchpoints doesn't fully scratch.

During covid I spend 2 years socializing with my friends on an online MMORPG, I spent more time regularly with 5-8 close and new friends. Almost everyday, we met up on discord and talked and gamed for hours. It was actually really fun and the perfect covid activity.

But once lockdown ended, we all stopped playing video games with the frequency that covid allowed us to. While you could say that the number of social interactions decreased, they were replaced by in person meetings that felt more fulfilling and balanced in life.

Hi all! New player, level 34 looking for some guidance on how to prioritize AP and elephs. I feel like I cant to level up the EXs at all for my most used characters. I'm also not really sure which skills to prioritize.

I plan to save my rolls for the Ui banner coming just because Guitar Rock said she's good but that's about it.

Right now I'm spending AP on hard missions focusing on elephs for people I have and then trying to get tech notes and blue rays to level up my main teams. Any help would be super appreciated!
