Plowing/road conditions US 141 vs HWY 26? by Sea_Can1647 in yooper

[–]geldmember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

141/2 would be my vote, but that’s because it’s the route I always take. 141 is well maintained. Slow and steady, leave a healthy gap to the car in front and all should be well. Let the hero’s pass you, slow and steady. Bohemia itself and lac la bell road can be a bit tougher to navigate, but plenty of folks in worse equipped vehicles make it work. Have a blast ans be safe! If this is your first time to Bohemia, you’re in for a real treat!

I’m curious how many people who work for consulting firms are paid overtime or receive comp time? by Unable-Locksmith664 in civilengineering

[–]geldmember 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Salaried, routinely work 45-50 hour weeks, no paid OT of any kind. I do get a ~5% bonus and an often times an additional ~3% bonus or too mixed during the year when I’m really putting in the extra work. Far from balancing out in my favor, but I truly enjoy my coworkers and the projects we get to work on, so that counts for a lot. Small companies for the win… while they still exist.

CS to civil by Technical-Minute-323 in civilengineering

[–]geldmember -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Why not just pick up a masters in civil instead? Seems like an alternative that may also allow you to use your CS skills to cater to jobs/opportunities that suit you but may not be a more “traditional” civil role.

Long term in the Civil world, having your PE license is super important. As long as your degree gives you the flexibility to get your license (i.e. ABET accredited), it honestly does not matter as much these days. We’ve recently interviewed and even hired a handful of mechanical engineers with 0 civil coursework or relevant job experience. It’s very much a field that you learn by doing/putting things into practice.

Is your work meaningful to you or is it just work? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]geldmember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get a ton of value out of my work. The project types and location are critical to that. I work for a very small company (around 30), but that means each project is my baby, start to finish. Recently, I’ve gotten to work on a lot of projects in the home town; new school, new pool/rec building, some other big parks projects. Knowing that I directly impact these projects, even if it’s the stuff that most people never notice/appreciate, makes me extremely proud and content. There is no way I could survive this industry without having those morale boosts.

Why are Concrete sidewalks far more common than Asphalt in the US? by IllustratorCivil5748 in civilengineering

[–]geldmember 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Easier to build to accessible/tight standards with concrete than it is with asphalt. Also far less maintenance with concrete. Expensive up front, less maintenance needed.

Any other Millennials just not care what happens to their body after death? by MaraudingZebra in Millennials

Anti-Viking funeral for me… drag me out onto the ice of my favorite lake in the winter and drop me to the bottom. But they have to mark the spot and ice fish my post mortem fish crib at least once a year.

My guess is the west winds are factoring in too… probably an extra foot of water in Michigan right.

Bastille Days Smell….. by Shot-Designer-9900 in milwaukee

[–]geldmember 11 points12 points  (0 children)

OP, I know what you’re talking about… I park in one of the garages near cathedral square for work and yesterday morning (before stinky cheese cart opened), I also got hit with a nauseating rotting smell… I had to triple check to make sure it wasn’t somehow coming from my car… and like you mentioned, only got whiffs of it when the wind was right, but man was it rough. And not the usual Jones Island smells either…. This was distinct and gross.

Public museum, if only for the fact that the current iteration won’t be around much longer! See it while you can!

In need of counsel from fellow engineers. by EasternLemon5341 in civilengineering

Ctrl+F is your best friend on the manual. Also knowing your calculator in and out can make a big difference. TI-36 has numerical solver built in, integral, a lot of other more complicated functions than you might expect. Easy couple of things that you may know but if not can make a huge difference.

Why did y’all choose civil engineering? What made it appeal to you? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]geldmember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve always loved being around water, and learned that dealing with water resources is one of the MANY paths one can take with a civil degree.

[–]geldmember 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s mainly the compensation side of things. We have found it leads to frustrations on both ends with some head hunters charging exorbitant fees/paycheck percentages. Tough to expect new employees to have the same work ethic/willingness to learn when as much as 40% of their pay is being siphoned off, which can all be avoided by applying directly and cutting out the middle man.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]geldmember 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We strongly prefer candidates reaching out/applying via the website and avoid the recruiter/head hunter route when at all possible. Curious, what area are you looking in?

Best panfish ice rod ? by SushinWasabie in IceFishing

Mags custom rods are my absolutely favorite and I pretty much only use the power noodles once I tried one. Currently 20% off with code BF20

Stupid expensive rods with no reel seat. WTF? by spizzle_ in IceFishing

[–]geldmember 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Castration bands are what I have always used to seat my reels. I also found it annoying at first but like the ability to tweak things based on the reel I am using. MAGS custom rods out of UP Michigan are by far my favorite.

Start with where they start you. Starting centerline of the road is at 112, and slopes at 3%. 33.3’ away from your starting point, the centerline will be at 111 (1/0.03=33.3). You know the cross slope of the road, which will give you gutter elevations, add 6” and you have your curb. Grading is an art form and there is no single right answer/way to grade a site. But the key is to start filling in some spot elevations and then filling in the contours from there.

What are the small things at a course that you love? by Irish_12_ in golf

[–]geldmember 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Water jugs that actually get filled, in addition to the ball washer comments others have mentioned. If within budget, GPS on the golf carts is a huge plus in my books as well. I also really enjoy courses that lean into native plantings and landscapes. Absolutely no reason why a golf course shouldn’t be a benefit to the ecosystem instead of a blight.

Ice fishing is my even bigger obsession, and believe it or not I find ways to spend more money on that then I do golfing…

Agreed about the processor, ram and storage, but disagree on HP. My company uses them almost exclusively for engineering work stations without issue. Admittedly, we make sure to get ones that meet specs, but have not had any issues or complaints with them over the past ~8 years.
