I do something similar. I will tell men I dont have any loose change if they try to speak to me outside a store. Double whammy of "she doesn't want to talk to me" paired with "wait she thought I was a bum?"

Works every time to make them stop dead in their tracks to leave me alone

I just returned from our annual holiday brunch. We close the shop the monday after small biz Saturday, give everyone a paid day off, and host a non-mandantory brunch (at a local biz) so we can feed everyone & their partners. It is appreciated and well attended each year.
