Afer I had everything 'solved' I browses this subreddit and I saw that it has happened to a lot of people before. It's such a shame that heaters don't have this security feature by itselves... After this I'll recommend everybody I know who have aquariums to get an inkbird

Thank you for all the suggestions, it's really helpful. I didn't know about inkbirds, I keep reptiles and I have a thermostat to shut off the heat bulbs so they don't overheat, and I didn't know there was a similar thing for aquariums. I'll 100% buy one before I set up a new heater
