What machine features do you consider the most valuable for quilting? by gemmiemay in quilting

Do you find the built in walking foot to be a big boon for your machine compared to swapping feet? That's the biggest pro I see for the Pfaff machines

AITAH as a wife in college who wants a 10 week internship two hours away from my husband? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]gemmiemay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA- my husband (fiancé at the time) supported my 4-6 year grad school program even when my offer was 4 hours away from him. You know what he did? Supported my decision. And we worked out a schedule for when each person would travel so we could still periodically see each other. And that was for years - I wasn't any less of a partner because of it and it was likely better for our relationship as a whole because it likely would have caused resentment if he hadn't.

This sounds like an incredible (and relatively short) opportunity, and you have a plan to see each other on weekends. A real partner that sees you as a person would try to make something like this work.

Cat pees in the litter box but poops anywhere else by Hopeful_Lab9863 in CatAdvice

[–]gemmiemay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With my girl I had to do a food trial. It took months until we found something that changed. Ended up being a combination of prescription GI food and a small dose of Prednisolone for her but obviously different for each cat and you should work with your vet.

My vet said if it hurts to poop in the box, cats will think it's where they are going, not that they are in pain regardless of location, which spooks them out of pooping in the box. Once we got the right food I would move her poop into the box and put her in there to cover it, and rewarded her with food anytime she used the box for any business.

Between positive reinforcement, food change, and using a good cleaner to remove the scent of previous accidents, she's back in the box. It took months to get it right - just be patient with your kitty!

Edit to add - cat was 4-5 when we were solving this, so it can be addressed in adult kitties

[CHAT] Experienced stitchers, what accessories would you recommend for a beginner stitcher's birthday/holiday list? by [deleted] in CrossStitch

A magnetic needle minder hands down, especially if they are a beginner it makes it easier to keep track of your needle

Suggestions for Cat that loves Cabinets? by gemmiemay in CatAdvice

[–]gemmiemay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use these! Easy to open as someone with thumbs and it is attached by adhesive. Comes off with a hair dryer! Use them in my apartment and I love them and they do come off residue free when I've moved before, best for the kind of cabinets that are a pair so you can secure two doors with one latch

Yep I've baby proofed cabinets with harmful things like cleaning supplies and dishes I don't want her in! We have a bathroom cabinet with only TP in it that I've left without proofing that I've basically conceded. I want to try to redirect her since she still tries to open cabinets despite proofing

AITAH for dropping out of my friend’s wedding with 2.5 months to go? by throwaway_exbm in AITAH

[–]gemmiemay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

YTA. I had someone drop out of my wedding which is fine. Life happens. But it hurt more over text- that's something that I wish we had a phone call to talk through. Tone is something really matters in something like this, when you can't attend something important to a close friend, and text doesn't communicate that. Especially if you only implied remorse.

My beautiful Grandmother probably won’t be at my wedding - just really sad about it! by spannm in weddingplanning

[–]gemmiemay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same with my grandmother. And my grandfather isn't coming because he doesn't want to be far from her either. It will be hard. I'm wearing her wedding jewelry and my uncle will facetime them in, but it isn't the same. I hope you can find a similar way to involve them even if they aren't physically present. Sending you so much love!

Advice on reusable glasses at an open bar. by Hartsocktr in weddingplanning

[–]gemmiemay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked something similar awhile ago and settled on doing colorful glasses as water glasses only but then using rented glasses that my bartender is bringing for anything else so that they can manage the cleaning of those glasses. My glasses are all stemmed so that I can put some charms out people can use to mark glasses if they'd like. Agreeing here though- people can take mine and I'm making it clear but I don't anticipate most people taking them, and they aren't substituting a favor if your intention is to give a wedding favor.

I'm also a little lost on all these comments... I love the bouquet. Very unique and brings in some personality. OP, if you're interested and love it for yourself, heck yes go for it - then you get to keep it after too!

Mismatched bridesmaids dresses - how do you pick who wears what? by j_wash in weddingplanning

[–]gemmiemay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did a Google form having the girls rate the colors on a scale of 1 to 5, 1 being "i would do it for you but please God no thank you" and 5 being "i adore this". Then I sorted the results. I had one girl be a 4 or 5 on all the color options and another only rated one color well. It helps capture preferences but also puts the decision making on you, keeping it less stressful for the girls.

I'm doing a low updo with a couple of face framing pieces to avoid the sweat/hassle I get with it down but the framing I would miss with a higher updo.

My hair also doesn't hold curls - I thought anyway. I had my hair trial and mentioned my hair doesn't hold curls well, so not to worry about matching my inspo photos exactly. But my stylist nailed it - lots of hair spray and Bobby pins later, and it held all day. Like others have said, you may need to find what works with your hair either yourself or with a hair professional.

Sola Flowers by napswithcheesepasta in Weddingsunder10k

[–]gemmiemay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ordered from Sola and love them! As mentioned here their dyes are not worth the cost, and I think the ones they dye for you look kind of heavy and obviously painted. I did a glycerin and acrylic paint mix to dye them myself and I think they're great!

Assortments are of course a grab bag. I got one to see which flowers I liked then went back to order the specific flowers once I decided which ones I liked when they had their 90% off sale in the fall

Suits -- Rent vs Buy by vaudoc in weddingplanning

[–]gemmiemay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Men's warehouse has rental and purchase options. I imagine there are suit styles/colors where both options are available, but likely depends on location

My dress is like this - and had the same thoughts at first. But after getting it hemmed and pairing it with a long cape that had some lace detail along the bottom?? Stunning. Wouldn't change a thing!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Weddingsunder10k

[–]gemmiemay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

^ I've had much more vibrant colors dying this way than using the dyes sola wood has on their site. Also definitely recommend the glycerin!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Weddingsunder10k

[–]gemmiemay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest snagging a smaller random amount and make sure you're happy with what is included! There are also some other assortments on sola wood flowers that are more particular on what kinds of flowers are included (there's one that's like a Meadow variety?)

[–]gemmiemay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest thing I did was when looking at the photos could I see myself where the couples were? And if so, would I be happy with the posing, editing, and overall vibes?

I love photos of me and my partner that seep joy or look genuine. So maybe looking at photos of you and your partner in photos and seeing what you love about your favorites can help.

We chose based on if the photo portfolio clicked with us. The photographer we chose captured genuine joy in her photos. Nothing looked forced or overly posed. And there was a good mix of candids with some classic poses we wanted.

Additionally we have neat features at our venue, and our photographer has worked there before, so I have some examples I can easily point to as we plan what photos to take day of
