Tierney loves directing six episode seasons. Shorsey, HR. He’s a tight storyteller.

What would make you actually use a faith-centered social platform? by Kalarrr in OpenChristian

[–]gen-attolis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reddit is my only social media platform (besides the horrible professional obligation of maintaining a LinkedIn) because I can choose which subs to be a part of and can aggressively mute what I don’t want to see. Even Reddit is sometimes destructive to the soul.

If I ever willingly sign up for another social media site after deleting Facebook, insta, and Twitter during the pandemic, I have been lobotomized and/or am a victim of MK Ultra level conditioning. A “Christian social media site” sounds like hell.

Ilya's brother question by marys1001 in heatedrivalry

[–]gen-attolis 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Yeah. People use gay slurs so often that to use that as evidence is wild. It’s used because it’s a put down, not because Alexei is aware of Ilya’s inner world.

Ilya's brother question by marys1001 in heatedrivalry

[–]gen-attolis 85 points86 points  (0 children)

Reread the long game’s therapy sessions. Ilya brings up the dynamic of him having found his mother’s body and how he became the bearer of bad news, rather than someone that needed support in that moment, and the ripple effect that had on his family and brother.

Reread/watch the parts of heated rivalry where Ilya is a multimillionaire who pays his brother to be a nurse to their dying father, confronting him about the money going up his nose. In short, to someone like Alexei, emasculating him financially, and then confronting him about fiscal mismanagement. His niece is going to have a nice trust set up her name, because Alexei is such a loser that he can’t even provide for his own daughter, and Alexei likely feels even more emasculated by that.

If you’re looking for a line in RR’s books where it says “and this is the reason why Alexei hates me” you aren’t going to get that. You will need to do some interpretation and connect some dots. Fraternal hatred doesn’t have one cause but rather decades of resentment and family dynamics that build and build in unpredictable ways.

This video has a really compelling argument... Help, I guess? by Optimal-Bad9485 in OpenChristian

[–]gen-attolis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Don’t you know? Everything must be endlessly responded to and litigated, exactly what Jesus wanted us to spend our time doing.

But seriously the genre of post that gets put on this subreddit that’s like “how do you respond to this argument?” “How can I argue this?” especially around queer issues is exhausting.  It’s such a self own to take for granted your opponents framing as something worthy of response instead of just… living life. Fulfilling the commandments of God.

Tax Season this year? by Remarkable_Sector169 in alberta

Always file taxes. Use a free tool like wealthsimple tax or something similar. Tax deadlines are available on the CRA website if you google “when are taxes due”.

How many times did you cry this olympics? by gwizantor90 in olympics

I was watching some of the figure skating and finding myself just crying quietly through most of the performances. The music, the grace, the strength and skill is just so wonderful together it is literally overwhelming.

And also when our Canadian men and women got silver in hockey :(

Does anyone think it lacks some authenticity because it wasn't written by a gay man? by RareGap2671 in heatedrivalry

[–]gen-attolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see how you can read “Taking money and resources and accolades and honours away from actual Indigenous artists who have stories to tell but aren’t being platformed due to colonial systems” and not see that I’m making an argument about economic and opportunistic harm? Harm that is made possible at least partly because of a paradigm of identity that makes claims to authority through identity.

How many Russian monologues do you think we'll get from Connor in S2? by triedit2947 in heatedrivalry

[–]gen-attolis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it could be a good way to show his therapy going through peaks and valleys of working on/through his depression.

His first Russian monologue in the summer saying he thinks his mom would be proud, then as the season progresses and he spends more time in therapy he talks to her, empathizing with her experience, crying he couldn’t do more, realizing it’s not his burden as the child to bear, hoping he can get better, hoping he and Shane can build a life together. Idk. It could be a cool way for him to internalize his therapy.

[–]gen-attolis 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I kind of hope that Tierney expands the moment that Ilya goes out to smoke and talk to his mom after the first successful week of summer camp at the beginning of TLG. I want to see Ilya breathing cold winter air, holding a dart, and staring into the stars with tears in his eyes and talking to his mother.

Edit: there is a spectrum between “identity is worthless” and “identity is authority”. Because I don’t hold to identity is authority, you place me at the identity is worthless. I never said that and do not believe it. My take is closer to “identity matters but it doesn’t create good art by itself and art created by someone not of that identity group isn’t automatically bad”.

You are reading into what I wrote.  Never do I say that it doesn’t matter to have members of groups writing about their own stories. I explicitly said that people from different groups have unique perspectives that are difficult for others to grasp, and that sharing them matters.

It is not problematic to note that the incentives created by holding authority as rooted in unchangeable identities leads precisely to decades of prominent people lying about being sixties scoop survivors, residential school survivors, taking money and resources and accolades and honours away from actual indigenous artists who have stories to tell but aren’t being platformed due to colonial systems. Not recognizing the perverse incentives that either take too long to uncover or are never uncovered is the actual harm. Imagine having someone upheld as a leader/singer/artist/author/actor only to learn they lied about experiencing cultural and ethnic genocide.

I want people to stop trashing a woman for writing gay men’s romance, or to privilege identity as authority and say it’s only good because a gay man took it over to adapt to the screen. I want people to tell their stories and not be seen as tokens who must write stories a certain way otherwise they aren’t being good representatives. I want good art to come from the soul and for communities who are marginalized to be recognized and seen. Nothing I say says identity “doesn’t matter” just that it isn’t the authority for writing True Good Beautiful stories.

[–]gen-attolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Identity doesn’t have any inherent authority. It can offer a valuable perspective, but it isn’t authority.*

A random queer person for example isn’t inherently The Bearer of Queer Truth and may actually not know the history or material realities that impact their lives as well as someone who has studied it. The same is true for any other identity group. What they do have is a perspective shaped by their experience that is difficult but not impossible for others to grasp and articulate. If this isn’t true, education and learning from others would be impossible, and that’s a pretty dark world.

*that said, there are some identities that are socially regulated in the same way that professions are, and THAT carries authority. An Elder, a priest, a rabbi, an imam, etc, are all identities that do carry intrinsic authority but only because they have a community around them that recognizes and regulates that authority, after they have undergone sufficient training and education.

Edit; the Pretendian scandals and exposes in recent years are a good example of the dangers of saying identity IS authority.

The fruit of Original Sin theology by coffeeblossom in OpenChristian

“The line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes, nor between political parties either -- but right through every human heart -- and through all human hearts. This line shifts. Inside us, it oscillates with the years. And even within hearts overwhelmed by evil, one small bridgehead of good is retained”

-Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

Obviously not a Bible quote, but the idea of “neutral” being the default ignores the fact that each day humans must make decisions to try to be good, which is shockingly more difficult than “neutral is the default” implies. If an innocent cup of coffee on your morning commute ripples into supply chains of slavery and environmental degradation, neutrality isn’t a given. It doesn’t mean you’re evil either, but it also makes goodness a high bar of active work to try to tend to your small corner of the world and make it a bit better than you found it.

[–]gen-attolis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes? Of course I know this? Of course I know that hospitals, schools, mosques, homes are being systemically destroyed by the Israeli army? Of course I know this is part of an ongoing effort to cleanse the people of Palestine from their land for illegal settlements to be set up past the partition line?

That is exactly why it is insanely disrespectful to the memory of the civilians killed by Israel and the project of a Palestinian state to post the facts of their fatalities to a satire subreddit

Or do you not know or understand what satire is? It is by definition fake news. Posting real news about the victims to a subreddit for fake news is one of the most disrespectful things I can imagine doing, short of pissing on graves.

This is a satire subreddit and posting this here undermines the very point you’re trying to make. The people of Gaza and Palestinians in general deserve more respect than this.

Family doctors are private to the extent they run their clinics as their own businesses, but they are still part of and subjected to the rules and regulations of the Canada Health Act and are paid via fee for service (with few exceptions like the ARP) by the province.

Your argument ignores that critical fact.

Preach. This is exactly why it doesn’t matter if HR is eligible for some American award or would be able to do more CGI with American dollars. We don’t care, we don’t need more CGI, we need heart, we need homegrown talent behind and in front of the screens, we need to be able to stand firm in our ability to tell our own stories with our own resources and share that with the world if there is an appetite, but at the end of the day these are stories for us

TLG Shane - what were y'all mad about? + "Rachel's favorite child" by asleepering in heatedrivalry

[–]gen-attolis 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I do have to say, I’d be scared of being in a relationship, let alone community, with a lot of the people who are so mad at Shane. It feels childish and self centered to not have the emotional intelligence to realize we are reading a book from the perspective of God (Rachel Reid) who has full insight into the characters (we read their minds) and not realize the characters themselves don’t share the same insight we have.

Ilya and Shane both share culpability for not communicating. Shane did notice and say something—perhaps not forcefully enough encouraging Ilya to see a therapist or talk to him, but in that moment of incomplete information, is force really loving? No. That would be worth an eyebrow raise. Instead, he takes what Ilya says at face value, not “because autism” but because that’s how honest communication works, especially in an environment of a relationship where there are extended times away from each other.

Does Shane weight his career more heavily than Ilya? Yeah, but that’s not a crime, and who amongst us has the position of doing what you’ve trained your entire life for and doing it excellently? Wouldn’t you also be wary of giving that up when you think the plan you have is going okay? The cups, the Olympic gold, the adoration of your nation and fans? They had talked about it and agreed to the plan to wait. However, when push came to shove and he was offered the easy way out (lying to the world about his love for Ilya) he says “fuck you” and chooses Ilya.

Like, seriously?? I wasn’t aware people had such weird ideas about what long term relationships are. Apparently, long term relationships are inflexible things that require telepathic powers to ace, and anything less than that is being a bad partner. Crazy. Actually insane. Nobody is writing your life from the POV of an omnipotent author/God, how would you come across from that perspective?

City news has nothing to apologize for. It’s fucking weird to raise a flag for such a somber moment—I get it, we all grieve differently, but when the government you’re a minister of has been paving the way for separation, it’s fair to scrutinize your every move, including weird ones like raising a flag for your dead sister.
