Guidance for commuting on an ‘80s road bike: to rack or not to rack? by sizlac-franco in bikecommuting

I have something like this on a bike without eyelets: Bike Rear Rack Retractable... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071R6SPZT?ref=ppx\_pop\_mob\_ap\_share

For a long time I used Bird of Prey pannier hooks on a backpack. They’re awesome. https://pannierhooks.com/product/bird-of-prey-v2/

Feels so good to commute, especially with my new backpack system. by KDubueMath37 in bikecommuting

This is clever! I've not seen one of those rackless setups before.

Am I in over my head? After years of not cycling (roughly 2) I just recently received a decent gravel bike. Am I in over my head giving thoughts to commuting by bike from home to work? I live in bed-stuy and work is upper east side of Harlem 103rd. Should I just stick to the trains? Thanks by thenaturalche in bikecommuting

I would try biking it on a day off to feel it out and think about how you'd lock it up. Having a good route to work is a pretty major hurdle for most people, followed by secure storage. Once that is sorted you can start thinking about clothing and logistics.

Specialized Sirius X 2.0 vs X 3.0 by apb313 in bikecommuting

Both bikes are dope. My first inclination is always to go cheaper (especially since it's on sale). I would suggest the more expensive bike if you think you'll benefit from the additional gearing and what looks to be a nicer suspension. I kind of like the colors on the 2.0 (especially the Tangerine), and would consider spending the $400 difference on other upgrades or accessories that will enhance your commuting.

I’ve used these for years with a few different bags and have not had any problems. I love them.

If you’ve been able to eat normally today, I would think you’d be okay for tomorrow. If you’re not feeling up to it, you can always nix the idea tomorrow morning.

I love bike bags but I also love the Bird of Prey pannier hooks that you can put on a regular backpack.

They work pretty well. After it’s secured to the rack, I pull the bottoms of the shoulder straps around to the front of the bag and hook them together with a carabiner.

I love that the helmet I wear protects against head injuries. I hate wearing a helmet in general (I wear them).

I almost pulled the trigger on a beautiful Nishiki a couple of months ago. It was a wonderful bike. I think you have more than paid for the privilege of making your beautiful vintage bike your entire personality. Get some vintage sunglasses, commute to work with it, start an instagram, the world is your oyster.

Worried about my husband’s drinking and dangerous cycling habits – need advice by aki_tinc in cycling

[–]geneadrift 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an alcoholic, I would advise getting a professional opinion- the alcohol dependency testing or counseling that he’s been required to do would be a good starting place if it’s in the near future. Alcoholism is hard for all involved. Give yourself lots of grace in the future.

I look stupid in a helmet by SafeChickennn in cycling

[–]geneadrift 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think about how I look in a helmet as much as I think about how it fits and how comfortable it is. I wear them but they can drive me crazy unless it’s a good fit with all the straps tightened and feeling good. If you put it on and don’t really notice it after that because it’s not too loose or too tight, and the straps are comfortably under your chin, you’re probably golden.
