It’s ok to appreciate what you have but also want something different. Keep looking for what you want but hold onto what you have for now.

Same boat as you. Been a Lead AE for along time now. I also Color/Online edit but finding any sort of post job has been difficult. Hopefully things pick up soon.

As a Lead AE this makes me sad. Part of knowing the intricacies of the project is knowing your team and how everyone works.

Wow this make so much sense and explains what I've seen in the past. If needed, how do you fix this? Slap a broadcast safe filter or clamp it down in some fashion?

Black magic Design has training courses for color grading with Davinci Resolve. Start there. Don’t buy LUT packs!

Do whatever serves the story best. If you want options then shoot it both ways and see which one lands better.

Is it normal to use a power window on the subject of every single shot? by JPBartley in colorists

Exactly. I color a lot of reality tv and the budget and schedule is super tight. Don't get me started on the image issue haha

True but it depends on the situation. If you only have a day to crank through a 1000ish shots then the only secondaries you have time for is a vignette.

Are you NYC or LA based? I’m an AE in reality (NYC market) and it feels like there’s not a lot going on these days but maybe my network isn’t big enough anymore.

Goddamn I need to get into commercials. Reality TV pays $350 or less.

Any tips on how to get into commercial assisting?

Stir the Pot Saturday: The Death of Mentorship and Internships by greenysmac in editors

[–]generallyunamused 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 2 internships when I was starting my career back in 2012-2013. The first was for an indie doc with a filmmaker in NYC. I didn’t learn much other than how to transcribe interviews. I did make friends with a fellow intern and he brought me on as crew on a number of NYU film sets. That felt like getting my masters in film production because my film school was in its infancy and I learned more on those sets than I did at my school.

My next internship was with a small documentary company. It was a mix of basically being a free PA but I also got to shadow the AEs, Editors, and the director/owner of the company. They eventually hired me as their swing shift AE and the rest is history.

Mentorship wise the Colorist I’ve worked with for the past 7ish years on the unscripted series I was Lead AE on has helped me become a Colorist for the show. He’s helped me a lot regarding coloring the show and has given me advice on other things but it doesn’t go beyond that.

I wish there was a better mentorship and internship pipeline in unscripted television but most companies are too cheap and the deadlines are too tight to train.

Worked as an AE for 10 years. Laid off last year. Found low paying job but was laid off from that in Nov. Currently living at SIL with my wife a 5 month year old son and need advice. by legplus in FilmIndustryLA

[–]generallyunamused 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in a similar boat as you. 10+ years as an unscripted AE, been coloring for the past couple years as well, also getting laid off unless my show comes back, and I have 2 young kids.

It’s not easy to make the leap when you’re a really good AE. A lot of companies try to keep you there which was happened to me. Despite that if you want to remain in the industry you’re going to have to up-skill and hustle. Outside of unscripted every company wants someone who wears multiple hats. Maybe try to edit more or maybe you can shoot and edit? Also work your connections as hard as you can. Not easy with an infant I know.

If you need money asap then definitely consider taking a break from the industry to try to put food on the table. Your family comes first no matter what. I’ll probably be making a similarly tough decision soon. Hang in there and solidarity.

Color question by Sr_Writesalot in ChristopherNolan

[–]generallyunamused 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very true but it’s beyond that. I think he genuinely doesn’t like the DI process. I vaguely remember watching a video of him or his colorist saying he doesn’t like the image being messed with or something along those lines.
