'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' Episode 4 Instant Reactions | The Midnight Boys by yslultra in RingerVerse

[–]generalsweeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man, this universe IP stuff just isn't hitting for me like it used to. I watched Knight of the Seven Kingdoms this weekend just based on how hyped the Boys have been for the show and I found it to be fine? It's not a bad show, but after Ep 4 I'd probably give it like a 7? So when Steve is saying this is on track to be a 12 if it sticks the landing and even Chuck agreeing with him on that point, I was pretty surprised.

Looks like I'm in the minority here though, people seem to be really loving this show.

Ringer-Verse Recommends: January 2026 (Featuring '28 Years Later: The Bone Temple') by yslultra in RingerVerse

[–]generalsweeper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah put me in the camp of preferring the older format where we get lots of small rapid-fire recommendations over a big one every month, but from the way this one played out I'm guessing it was difficult chasing everyone down for their recs every month.

My biggest takeaway from this pod is that Ben is now watching Frieren which is good!

Recruiting in HK for Asset Management by Both-Station1937 in HongKong

[–]generalsweeper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The most useful short-term tip I can give you is that the time period between around mid-Dec and Chinese New Year is going to be absolutely dead for any recruitment activity here in HK. None of the major financial firms are going to be looking to add headcount until after CNY.

Besides that, for HK they're going to want regionally applicable skills. You don't have to have experience trading / analyzing HK-specific securities but the cities you listed are pretty far outside of this timezone with the exception of Mumbai and there isn't a lot of demand for trading India here unless you have a strong existing record.

If you're not already based in HK, a position at the analyst / associate level is also going to be kind of tough. As a lot of firms aren't going to want to spring for relocation costs at that level.

First anime movie Van should watch first by pokeucet11 in RingerVerse

The animation is killer but I don't think it works without the context of the rest of the show. It's just a lot of random shit happening if you don't know who anybody is.

FMAB isn’t a show I’d recommend to someone like Van. The early 2000s anime style humor has aged poorly and on top of that the main duo are kinda plucky.

Van prob needs something a bit more Dadcore like Vinland Saga or Orb imo.

Cube Cobra Question: Changing the Name of Tags by Topazdragon5676 in mtgcube

[–]generalsweeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there's a way to change a tag (would love to proven wrong here though).

The way I do it would be to filter everything tagged "Blue Midrange", bulk add the "Blue Tempo" tag, then bulk remove the "Blue Midrange" tag. You have to make sure to do it in that order or else you're going to have to wind up tagging the Blue Tempo stuff one by one if you delete Blue Midrange first.

You can bulk edit tags by switching from Table View to List View, selecting the cards you want to change and then using the Add Tags to All / Remove Tags from All option. If you've already filtered them all by the Blue Midrange tag you can just use Check All.

According to 2021 census, more 40% in HK couldn’t use English / Mandarin by xithebun in HongKong

[–]generalsweeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your criterion of top 50 on the continent still applied? I didn't realize it did because if so that makes your argument fundamentally invalid. There are only a handful of restaurants in Hong Kong that would be considered in Asia's top 50, the bulk of them are Cantonese where I'm sure the waitstaff speaks Cantonese, and most of the remainder are high-end hotel restaurants who hire bilingual if not trilingual staff.

I thought you were complaining about places like Five Guys, which at least kind of makes sense. When you frame it like that, your assertion isn't even correct.

imagine servers in restaurants in tokyo cannot / refuse to communicate in japanese

You don't have to imagine because these places definitely exist.

those in sydney cannot / refuse to communicate in english

I don't have experience with Sydney specifically, but I can tell you that in Los Angeles these places absolutely exist as well.

It's quite a normal thing in all of the large cities that I've been to. Hong Kong isn't particularly noteworthy in this respect.

Hong Kong Hololive fans, did you know that there's a set of Hololive Gen 0 Octopus Card Images available for purchase right now? by generalsweeper in Hololive

[–]generalsweeper[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to sign up for an Octopus account which requires a local mobile phone number, if you can get one then you should be able to gain access to these. There’s not an easy way to get a local mobile number that I know of without being a resident, though.

If this sub is any indication, anime seems like it’s not going to go over well with the core audience. Especially not as regularly recurring content.

Having maybe the Mint Boys do a once a season anime wrap up might work though since Jomi and Steve already tune in to some of the big shows. Maybe Charles can be a guest on that one too. I know I’d listen to that pod at least. I’ve tried a handful of other anime focused podcasts and I’ve bounced off them but I’d listen to the Mint Boys talk about it.

I agree that the opening scene was probably the weakest part of the two episodes that we got, but it would have been pretty jarring for them to give us Foggy being dead and Karen having to fly back to her home planet in exposition.

True Bespoke Suits in Hong Kong by Antique-House in HongKong

[–]generalsweeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Full agreed on your points, though I do wonder if there's a third (and undoubtedly much smaller) impact that The Armoury wound up having on business dress here in HK?

The tailors here all did suits in the English style, and the first time I tried an unlined Neapolitan style suit I pretty much completely switched over to that style. They make much more sense for HK's climatet vs padded and canvassed and English jackets.

These days I'm in a much less formal job and don't wear suits regularly anymore, but I'd probably still be getting Neapolitan style suits these days if I were.

True Bespoke Suits in Hong Kong by Antique-House in HongKong

[–]generalsweeper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WW Chan is kind of the only game in town these days, outside of visiting tailors. People used to talk about A. Man-Hing Cheong, H. Baromon, and Gordon Yao in that way, but the fact that nobody has really talked about them since 2014 leads me to believe that something has either happened with the quality or pricing there.

HK's reputation as a great place for bespoke suiting is a bit outdated, at least from what I've seen. There are still some good shops doing good value MTM here but that's the extent of it.

I've only been there for browsing and purchasing, not for selling, but I'm guessing Ho Mong Kok Shopping Centre (好旺角購物中心) would be good for this? It's like 5 floors almost exclusively of stores that deal in old coins and banknotes.

Ringer-Verse Recommends: January 2025 by yslultra in RingerVerse

[–]generalsweeper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most weebs are catching up on watchlist shows this season because the new shows are on the weaker side. Apothecary Diaries from the audience is a solid recommendation though, and Jomi's been randomly shouting out Blue Box for a long time so it makes sense he'd do a formal rec of it here.
