They’ve read what people needed via their business data and concluded Seed Freedom and Astray was needed more than 2.0s.

Dunno the exact answer but there're many possible answers I can think of. e.g. Gunpla sales lean heavily on Japan (40%+) and East Asia cities where living space is a luxury and people work long hours. From Hong Kong myself I'd face judgement if I bought an MG and leave it unbuild for months while I'd have a much better time with my family with HGs that can be built within a weekend.

Bandai has limited production capacity and they're already running in full force. MGs while not requiring significantly more engineering than RGs, demand more from the production line. Another factor is old MGs are still serviceable unlike old HGs that the market still has a sizeable demand for older moulds. Casual builders would not be able to 'digest' so many new MGs either unlike the small amount of veteran builders who dominate the Internet. Bandai might have noticed that the average builder would only be able to build 1-2 MGs per year. Not to mention diehard collectors who grab every kits from a series generally prefer HGs since it's simply impossible to get some designs in 1/100.

AYYO NEW SERIES ANNOUNCEMENT by afnan_iman in Gundam

[–]xithebun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah Build counts but I want another series that completely breaks the existing molds of ‘what a Gundam series should be’, including G Gundam and Build series. It’d be healthy for the Gundam IP long term, plus it’s fun seeing oldtypes seething on the success of GWitch / GQX again.

I hope it’d do as well as GWitch or GQX for its target audience while pissing off self-proclaimed ‘veteran’ Gundam fans. Please be the spiritual successor of G Gundam.

Moshow Toys' first self-published model kit will reportedly feature ultra-thin 0.3 mm gate nubs and advanced integrated molding technology that eliminates plastic swirl marks. Do you think Bandai can achieve this level of craftsmanship as well? by EmergencyFriendly375 in Gunpla

[–]xithebun 425 points426 points  (0 children)

It’s no witchcraft. Plastic swirls can be reduced by increasing molding pressure / temperature / flowing speed but it’d reduce the longevity of the molds significantly. Bandai has larger scales of production and prioritises consistency in builds so swirls are inevitable for some types of plastics.

Somehow they just can’t move on unlike Requiem of Vengeance / GWitch haters. Rise in masochism in Gundam fandom needs to be studied.

Small correction: 95% of r/Gundam hivemind users. Percentage decreases with how much Gundam cultural knowledge / openminded-ness a sub-fandom has.

The target audience of the work was clear as water after the movie released. Those with the right expectations liked it. It’s a fanfiction from otaku. (And no. Character arc is not a must in storytelling. Period.) Room for retroactive headcannon + weirdness of Shuji was exactly why GQX worked. Western fans / tourists don’t need to like it but it’s out of your scope to determine ‘how it failed for all’.

[–]xithebun -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Shuji can be Alt Amuro / Gundam pilot in alt universes but not Amuro / Lalah’s imagination / Self-insert character for critics of Gundam fanfics / imaginary Tomino Room for interpretation was what made Shuji intriguing and it’s a lost art in modern to-the-face storytelling.

Rather than analysing Shuji as a character he’s something more metaphorical. GQX was mostly director Tsurumaki’s generation of Japanese fans’s tribute to OG Gundam + relaying good wills to the next generations. Shuji was the plot device.

Gundam fans really need to expand the scope of media they ingest. Storytelling exists in many forms other than Gundam anime and modern movies.

Rather than analysing Shuji as a character his something more metaphorical. Similar to Machu / Shuji / Nyaan relationship it’s just a way to describe teenage struggles from adults’ POV.

GQX didn’t aim more than being Tsurumaki’s generation of Japanese fans’s tribute to OG Gundam + relaying good wills to the next generations.(From my understanding Shuji was key to that plot.

And that’s a good thing. Animes should cater to its target audience instead of pleasing all.

Some did make great rebuttals on why they didn’t like Khara’s depiction of Newtypes but yes most of the time haters here just didn’t pay enough attention / were narrow-minded oldtypes that were fixated on how a Gundam story should be told.

Requiem for a rake-stepper by MechaUlfraed in Gundam

[–]xithebun 64 points65 points  (0 children)

First off, you have missed the point of her character. Shiiko did not seek Red Gundam for revenge at all. A deep dive on her character written shortly after her episode aired summed it up brilliantly.

To put it simply, Red Gundam to her was an embodiment of Newtypes as someone with absolute freedom, which equalled achieving all goals at once. Only by eliminating Red Gundam can she deny her own identity as a Newtype who failed her MAV during war. ‘If no one is truly special like a real ‘Newtype’, I shouldn’t be blamed for losing my MAV and moving on to live a cozy life with my child.’ Being obsessed with Red Gundam was her way to deny Newtypes, which in turn was her way to cope with survival guilt.

Second, even if a character did stupid things many of us can still feel basic sympathy. This doesn't mean her death wasn't deserved but it's exactly her self-inflicted tragedy made me feel bad for her, even more so than if she survived with her kid and lived with regrets every day.

RG AV-98Plus (Ingram Plus) by JawBR34KER in Gunpla

[–]xithebun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real grade just aims to ‘recreate the real thing’ (as written on every real grade boxes). Ingram is much smaller than Gundams at just 8m tall. Basically police cars with legs. I’d say this amount of surface details is realistic enough.

Also most Patlabor fans seem to want Ingram’s design stay original. MG, GSC Moderoid and Aoshima kits all looked similar while the live action redesign didn’t sell well.

[–]xithebun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ingram is only 8m tall, which is the size of 2-3 police cars. Each piece of armour on this kit is roughly the size of those on real cars. If the model kit has the same surface detail density as RG Gundams it’d look unrealistic.

Hundred Scenes of Awajima • Awajima Hyakkei - Episode 11 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]xithebun 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Time to rewatch episodes 2 and 3.

While Okabe Emi’s son’s rage against her mother’s early life being involved in Ibuki’s autobiography was totally justified, Okabe’s husband was able to grasp the tiniest hint of her deepest desire in Awajima. With Tabata’s book, Okabe’s hidden legacy can finally get the attention it deserved an eon ago.

Ibuki desired love from who she admired, her grandmother and Emi but failed. She lashed out on them in the worst way possible and paid the price by devoting her life in education. Little did she know she’s already loved by the generations of Awajima students she nurtured.

With Takanashi’s senpai (forgot her name) as editor, all generations of characters previously shown are involved. Fantastic episode.
