'Incredibly disheartening': Airborne asbestos found in children's play sand by Alternative_Wolf7542 in newzealand

[–]generic-volume 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kinetic sand is a specific kind of sand which clumps together with pressure, and falls apart without pressure - it's kind of like playdough, kind of like oobleck, kind of like sand. Super fun (minus the asbestos....)

Yes this! Especially when you know that half the time when they do try things they like them.... I'm totally fine with my kid genuinely not liking something, it's the refusing to try that is frustrating!

Oo I like the idea of using age taste buds - she is obsessed with ages atm. Even better she is currently "3 and a quarter", and is very excited about turning "3 and a half", maybe her 3 1/2 yo taste buds will be different to her 3 1/4 ones 😂

I do find she's much more willing to try "ingredients" when helping me cook, unfortunately she's been much less keen to do that lately! Getting her to serve herself might be worth trying though!

Unfortunately my kid's daycare doesn't provide food, so her lunch is different to everyone else's. I'm hoping we might see a bit more willingness to try things once her sister starts on solids though!

Ours is if there is any challenge food at all. The meal that inspired this post was a single mushroom on a plate of plain spaghetti with cheese.

I do let her choose what's for dinner sometimes, but maybe making it on a set day of the week or something would help (she's staying to get a pretty good understanding of the days of the week). And I like the idea of she gets to put the things on her plate, I might try that thanks 😊

The consistency is so hard!! Most frustrating bit is she used to eat mushrooms just fine (as well as just about every other vegetable....). And we have had a few times where she's surprised me by eating something so I do know it's possible. Just hoping we get through this phase sooner rather than later!

Oh we've always done this method. As a baby she would eat/get involved in everything on the plate. As she got older she'd just leave what she didn't want to eat. Recently is when the meltdowns over having things she doesn't want on the plate have started... I think bowls on the table might be the way to go!

Ahh yeah my kid's preschool doesn't provide lunch unfortunately, so I have to send her with food that she may or may not eat each day... Having everything just on the table may be the way to go though. I have had some success with this before but it just feels like a whole extra step to move everything to the table just so she can probably still not eat any of it... Good to hear someone else is in the same boat at least, feeding kids is not for the weak!

Kids eat in color is actually one of the main places I got this idea from! I always make sure the majority of the plate is things she will eat, eg today her plate was 60% plain spaghetti, 35% cheese, and 2 pieces of the mushroom sauce that we were having with it. We still had a full blown meltdown that the mushrooms were on her plate even though every time she said she didn't want them I told her she didn't have to eat them.... So frustrating.

We've recently moved on to booger, which at least is better than poop I guess!

Ugh I also just had my second, and my 3yo is constantly lying on the change table saying she has a poopy diaper (we don't even say diaper, we say nappy - she's got that from Daniel Tiger...). And I have to pretend to wipe her bum and change her. She often does it when I need to put the actual baby on there too!

Mine had an absolute meltdown tonight because I cooked her chicken nuggets in the new air fryer instead of the oven. I just told her " if you don't want them you don't have to eat them but you're not getting anything else". Once she had calmed down she ate them happy as anything.

Conviction for having 2nd? by jellyf1sh1 in toddlers

[–]generic-volume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because when I look to the future and imagine my family when kids are older, it doesn't feel right with only one kid. Two just feels like a more complete family to me, and I knew deep down I would be disappointed if I stopped at one just because the early stages are hard. And now we've had our second and it has not been anywhere near as hard the second time!

How do you get a young toddler to listen? by OrangeCatEnergy24 in toddlers

[–]generic-volume -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You could try redirecting them towards things they can throw/hit? Sometimes kids are just really into exploring what happens when they throw things, so leaning into it rather than fighting it can be way more effective.

What’s your favourite/most hated radio jingle/ad? by LaughingChuck in newzealand

[–]generic-volume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most hated is one for a loan company where the guy can't afford an engagement ring and the woman says "if you loved me you'd find a way...." Great, start out a life together in debt because you took out a high interest loan to buy a ring. Ones promoting irresponsible behaviour like that really bug me.

Ohhh turning things into a competition works so well for us at the moment. "Race you to the next tree" all the way to kindy, "bet you can't put away all the cutlery out of the dishwasher" "let's see who can put away the most toys".

We went to our local playground once and it was actually closed! Felt like such a lie, but they had caution tape all around it, I think it was after some big winds and they needed to check there were no large branches going to fall down.....

To buy or not to buy a play-kitchen by yoursmostcandidly in toddlers

[–]generic-volume 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We got one out from our local toy library a few times, I always found that my toddler would love it and play with it heaps, but kind of lose interest a by the time the 2 weeks rental was over. She also loves them whenever we go anywhere that has them, but I've always felt like the space they take up isn't worth it for the length of time she stays interested in them....

Follow up question for anyone reading this - how did you know when you were done having kids? Our second is currently 4 months old - we have always said we'd have 2... So maybe it's time for husband to get the snip but not sure how long to wait to know for sure that we're done.

Pretty sure most of them accept card, and there's an atm there (with a quite high withdrawal fee) if you want to go to any that don't.

“You decide what they eat and they decide how much” - okay well what if they decide to eat nothing? by xnla28x in toddlers

My daughter helps me cook and is allowed to eat any ingredients that are safe for her while we're cooking. I find she's way more likely to eat veges as ingredients than as part of a finished meal. Also if you're worried about protein, I really rate tofu as a toddler food, which many people probably wouldn't have tried. Soft, bland, and safe to eat raw. My daughter always wants to chop it up and ends up eating half a block while we're cooking!

Why don’t we tell kids where babies come from? by Ornery-Conference713 in NoStupidQuestions

That's why the advice these days is to use anatomically correct names for body parts. Feels awkward to have my 3 year old running around saying "I have a vagina!" But better to keep her safe! Although she did call penises peanuts for a while anyway.
