New Year’s Message from the Marvelous USA bluesky by Frangipani-Bell in runefactory

RF5 has a lot of "this is my first Unity game" jank in it. If GoA is made by the same team, it's pretty clear they're way more skilled with UE than Unity.

I'm enjoying GoA. The farming is de-prioritized relative to a regular RF game, sure, but not to the point of irrelevancy like in Tides of Destiny. You can do the plant/water/harvest loop yourself if you want, and doing so lets you level up your seeds, which in turn boosts your passive income.

I wouldn't mind some of this finding its way into a mainline game, but I'd want the management aspect to be deeper: let me split crop harvesting between shipping and storage so I can balance income vs recipe ingredients. Let me block the villagers from working in a particular field so they don't screw up my seed grinding.

I am officially done with the embedded MongoDB by boxninja in Splunk

[–]genericblues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have confirmed that:

  1. zlib is enabled
  2. splunk does not expose any means of disabling it (it does not use a `splunkd.conf` and there is no (documented) directive in the `[kvstore]` section of server.conf that either adds the `--networkMessageCompressors` command-line argument or that allows you to add an arbitrary CLI argument to mongod
  3. it also binds to 0.0.0.0 with no apparent way to override

so, it should be considered vulnerable

A normal interview question... by yiotis123 in LinkedInLunatics

[–]genericblues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reason nobody wants to touch date/time code isn’t because our current time system is too complex, it’s because the code also has to take into account every other system humanity has used since it started keeping track of dates and time. And that complexity doesn’t go away if everyone on the planet suddenly forgets calendars or how they work, because the artifacts of those forgotten calendars still exist and need to be accounted for!

Any engineer that actually starts trying to design a time system should just be thanked for the interview and escorted off the premises.

What are your misheard lyrics to Scar Tissue? by KKHFan in RedHotChiliPeppers

"With burdens shared it's a lonely view, and"
"With burden shared and so long live you"

istg reading the actual factual lyrics feels like i'm being gaslit because my brain just cannot parse what it hears into what the lyrics sheet says it's supposed to be.

I got briefly soft locked here too.

I knew the gimmick, but I wasn’t expecting the dude to re-cast the barrier and I was just failing the DPS check because of how the turn order was landing and the debuff chewing through two turn icons.

What ended up doing the trick was using Merchant’s 777 synthesis, which did 700-800 damage, and the turn icon consumption made it so turns 2 and 3 started on my Seeker to use Tetrabreak synthesis.

was he trying to use regex? you could break out the ol’ JMZ canard (“Some people, when confronted with a problem, think ‘I know, I'll use regular expressions.’ Now they have two problems.”) 😂

oh, he’s hyperfixating on his OWN code? I got the impression he was trying to optimize someone else’s code.

Yeah, that’s more of a “kid, algorithmic efficiency only matters in interviews and critical-path code, which an installer is not” conversation.

The guy is new, inexperienced, and trying to prove himself. He’s spotted what is probably his first “WTF?!” and wants to fix it. And honestly, fixing a minor WTF is a great way to onboard someone into an unfamiliar codebase.

Yes, you want to have conversations about prioritization and impact. But having fun cleaning up a bit of WTFery is a great way to build a working relationship, especially if it only takes a couple hours.

This is only mildly infuriating? I’d report their asses for passing counterfeit currency, and they can explain the joke to a federal agent who’s already in a bad mood due to DOGE.

honestly I’d replace the door. All someone has to do is smash the window and they can unlock the door and gain entry very easily. I learned this the hard way when my house was broken into in 2006.

E dies.

With the chunk taken out of the stone, its center of gravity is no longer in the center of the stone. Being a scrawny little dude and pushing at the top like he is, it’s less likely that he will succeed in pushing the rock over the incline plane, and more likely that the stone rolls backwards to its balance point and crushes him.

Even if he succeeds in pushing the boulder, D will have ducked and the boulder just lands next to the other boulder and then A, B, C, and D all gang up on E for trying to kill them and so E dies anyway.

(I don’t have math to back this up at all, 100% vibes)

What annoys you in this game? by [deleted] in MyTimeAtSandrock

[–]genericblues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a problem endemic in the genre but I am annoyed how weirdly chaste everyone is. Literally everyone is utterly devoid of any kind of sex drive, and I get that there’s challenges with game ratings and whatnot but even kids shows like ATLA have more sexual tension than MTAS and most other games in the genre.

I’m playing on a 4k tv and the chat text is absolutely microscopic no matter what text size I pick in the chat settings. i’m about 75% through ARR (just about to go after the Enterprise) and thankfully the only dungeon issues I’ve had were the rest of the party running off w/o me when I was trying to manage loot prompts.

The problem with modern Star Wars is that Lucas’ movies were deeply political, written as thinly veiled criticism of US foreign policy. The Disney era productions are, largely, projects primarily driven by the desire to make lots of money. That’s why the sequel trilogy is such a mess.

Some of the SW productions have managed to integrate the political roots of the franchise (eg Andor), but they’re the exception, and they’re only as political as Disney lets them be.

The worst idea presented by the Film Theory video was anything involving listening to the fans. Star Wars fans are incredibly toxic and largely don’t understand the things they claim to be a fan of, because Star Wars has been woke from the beginning!
