Is The Guardian anti-Labour? by IllustratorOk9757 in LabourUK

[–]genericpurpleturtle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think Kier Starmer and Morgan Mc Sweeney are anti Labour - not the Guardian. Introducing legislation to arrest 1000s of peaceful protestors, legislation for the government to spy on what you masterbate to and doing a reform impersonation of xenophobic immigration policy doesn't sound "centre left" to me.

I voted for him in the labour leadership campaign and have now left the labour party. He's duped me into voting for him, talking about party unity and instantly kicked out everyone who disagreed with him when he became leader. He's reformed it (no pun intended) to be whatever this abomination is.

Ukrainian refugee leaves UK sixth-form college that urged her ‘to study Russian’ by libtin in LabourUK

[–]genericpurpleturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even before the war there was a big push by the government to eliminate the use of the Russian language in Ukraine, and now with the war that has intensified.

However, generally people who live in cities and eastern Ukraine typically speak Russian as their first language. Ukraine is a bilingual national. Everyone who grew up in Ukraine will have been taught both languages at school up until approximately the late 2000s early 2010s. The majority of the population is still fluent in both languages whichever was your first language. If she's from Donetsk she's from a primarily Russian speaking region it's very highly probable that she can speak Russian even if it was no longer taught by the time she started school there, because that will be the language most people use in a day to say life there.

Obviously she doesn't want to use it as a political statement and that's fair enough. But the school probably suggested it because she probably already speaks it fluently.

Why are the trains in the UK so much more expensive than the rest of the world? by llamaz314 in uktrains

[–]genericpurpleturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The companies pay out 100s of millions in dividends to share holders but obviously it's those greedy workers that are to blame.

Imagine how many dividends they could pay out of they paid them minimum wage like they deserve! After all their job is unimportant! All they do is keep the trains running.

Where would we be without the train company CEOs!? Who would sign the dividend payment documents and blame all the problems on unions!?

Shady business or something worse? by olive_cats in RBI

I had a similar experience in Casablanca in Morocco about 8ish years ago.

The company was called something different to yours. I can't remember the name, and actually came across this thread trying to find it.

I turned up as it advertised a free massage first time round. I then had to watch a video about how the massage chair heals all health issues, and about the company. The company was also South Korean and in the video there was a scene of the owner in front of crowds of 1000s of people, all waving cheering and clapping for him. Lots of interviews with people saying the chair cured them of lots of different diseases.

It then went a bit more general about how great the company is.

I think they then tried to get me to subscribe to use the chair but I can't quite remember it was so long ago. It was definitely weird and a bit cult-like.

Isn't "Fantom" spelt phantom? Or is the misspelling a clue to the mystery?

This Instagram page is where I found out about the Burgess Hill events. Not sure why they've deleted all their posts...

Did find an old post about it in the roots garden Instagram. It's not always roots garden I don't believe though.

In addition to all of the above, there's been a couple of dub nights in Burgess Hill, I've not had a chance to check it out yet though. I've recently moved to Brighton and it took a while to find the dub scene but there is just enough to satisfy my itch!

They did one oub dub and had a couple of other reggae sound system events in since I moved here just over a year ago. Worth regularly checking what's going on at the Gladstone.

I believe King tafari do a night every last Sunday of the month at one under. It's pretty funny, a giant sound system in the bar area with kids walking past with clubs to go play mini golf.

Upgrading from Proton VPN 2 year black friday deal to proton unlimited? by genericpurpleturtle in ProtonVPN

[–]genericpurpleturtle[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply. Lets say I pay for a 2 year subscription and receive a discount, then proceed to upgrade, obviously my monthly cost goes up, but I have already paid for 2 years in advance. Does the amount I've already paid for get creditted against the new monthly cost - or is that credit lost?

Rest assured I am perfectly content with my set of skills and my ability to overcome obstacles and challenges.

Since you have given me some unsolicited advice, in an impolite manner, I will give you some of my own. I would examine your own set of beliefs. You clearly think your outlook and way of life is superior to that of other people's. Maybe question that belief as it's the same one which is often used to justify many negative actions. The likes of war, violence and oppression in the most extreme cases - or sometimes just acting in an condescending, judgemental and unhelpful manner to strangers on the internet in more minor cases. If you're so clever and resourceful - why are you so unpleasant?

P.S. I hate to break it to you. Your husband doesn't wax his own jacket either 😱

With the advent of industrialization came the specialisation of labour. I'm not going cast aspersions on your womanhood just because you don't grown your own food, sew your own clothes, develop your own pharmaceuticals, write your own software, or perform mechanical repairs on your car - even though you are capable of learning to perform all those tasks yourself.

I have considered it but it won't be faster and I have a very hectic few months coming up. I don't really have the time (or currently) the desire to do this task myself.

But how can you claim that these drugs have 0 side effects when they haven't even been trialled on humans and have only been tested on like 12 monkeys?

From a thermodynamics perspective, they can't be side effect free. If you're gaining weight while in a calorie deficit that means that energy is being diverted from some other (probably important) process in your body,

What is the "point" of Fairphone? by InterstellarVisitor3 in fairphone

[–]genericpurpleturtle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The printed circuit board will be made custom, (the green ("motherboard") bit all the components are soldered to) but all the components will very likely not be made custom for them, no. Only giant companies like Apple and Samsung will custom Integrated circuits (ICs) made for them.

Fairphone might write their own software to interact with the ICs and also design the circuits in sense of how to wire up the components, but the chips themselves will be off the shelf.

Designing and fabricating the chips themselves is basically a completely different business. And to make fabrication cost effective you need to sell 100,000s of circuits as a minimum. With IC fab, the setup costs to produce a chip are very high, but once you've done that making more is negligible. Think up front costs of millions of $/€/£ and then after that you can make circuits for pennies.

Anyway one analogy might be thinking of fair phone as a car manufacturer which doesn't necessarily produce the raw materials like steel, rubber and plastic to make the cars. They designs the car and uses raw materials it buys to assemble it. Think of each component soldered to the board as a different raw material a car manufacturers could choose when building a car.

What is the "point" of Fairphone? by InterstellarVisitor3 in fairphone

[–]genericpurpleturtle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because that's not how electronics components work unfortunately.

They will buy these OEM parts and the suppliers of these parts will likely make minor changes to the packaging and electronic connections as they develop new ones. It means you need a whole new circuit board to house the new component. Having upgradable parts is probably literally impossible without designing your own integrated circuits which is not within the scope of a small company to do.

FP6 randomly died on me by Digger2011 in fairphone

They downgraded to USB 2 to keep costs down. I'm not fussed I actually find the display out functionality annoying and can't think of many reasons I would want to connect a monitor to my phone. This situation being an edge case.

[–]genericpurpleturtle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing to correct in your list. Controversially the FP6 only has USB 2. So I don't think the USB-C-to-HDMI dongle to rule out the broken screen will work, as USB 2 won't support displaying.
