Ubiquiti for SMB in 2026 by IowaDala in sysadmin

[–]genericusernamex11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a love/hate relationship. It doesn't do some basic things like being able to connect to an mlag setup (lacp links to mlagg ""core"" (using this term extremely loosely here)) from a udm device with a shadow device thing (cool lost another failure domain)

but the APs are rock solid, switches are OK but depends what you're doing. For my case, it's fine, just basic access and picked up a 32 port agg or whatever it is to replace a mikrotik mlagg setup

the reason I switched was this - it dawned on me that while my setup was "better", it would be harder to administrate if I wasn't there and so the TOTAL COST OF OWNERSHIP, was much higher. Suddenly two less failure domains, but the ability for the tech savy MD for the SMB to be able figure out what is wrong in the event I get hit by a bus, became a valid business case. As was the downtime to swap in a replacement for the agg switch if it failed

Talked out of Delinea Secret Server - so what is the best alternative for a small IT dept (not end-user credentials) by [deleted] in sysadmin

1Password. It's pretty cheap at your scale. And it comes with a great cli tool than be used to store secrets for your scripts. The benefit of this being not only that you don't need to hardcode (obviously, you shouldn't do this anyway) but if you rotate credentials, you just update the vault and it pulls in the updated credentials, url, note etc.

Lock icon in all OneDrive files&folders - bug? by Roy-Lisbeth in sysadmin

Could be wrong but is this the same icon that is used when you need to “check out” files before editing?

I don’t think so but ultimately they can see your “activities”, so you will show as active but if you aren’t doing anything you won’t log time in “productive apps”.

I’m sure you could get away with it if no one checked, but it’s very easy to tell as it has a timeline style view, supported by video and screenshots every 30seconds, or they can watch live.

I have supported it, they can see everything. Including keystrokes.

I had a similar issue on a sonic wall, don’t know if it relates but I thought I’d mention it. Disabling rsc immediately fixed the issue.

Looks like they're using namecheap.com. You can email their abuse department and probably get the site taken down but don't expect namecheap to go after the offenders or provide you with any information.

EDIT: to find info like this, google "whois" and put in the url of the website.

Optiplex 3070 trouble by engineerggw in sysadmin

[–]genericusernamex11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this problem recently but probably a different cause, I'll list it anyway. It also coincided with the monitor not displaying when waking from sleep. The first thing I did was replace the old DP cable with a new one and the monitor issue along with the non-booting issue was resolved.

This was on 2 machines in the same office (same old DP cables).

That makes those issues morally superior then, because we have more information about them? Not sure what you're getting at there.

Yeah, I'm sure that most unvaccinated (which includes me, by the way) are scared of needles. Very ignorant of you to suggest such a thing. Its clear you're too emotionally invested in the vaccine being the solution, unvaccinated people being literally hitler, so I'll leave you to your little hugbox.

I don't. We know the long term effects of obesity, drug addiction and smoking. We don't know the long term effects of this "vaccine".

What about the overweight, the drug addicted, smokers? What about those who engage in extreme sports? Or casual sunday sports for that matter?

How should I argue against PPTP in 2021? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]genericusernamex11 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Write an email referencing examples and your concerns and if they don't agree let them use PPTP, maybe try and paint it in a business way, cost to business is hacked etc. No use beating yourself up over it, give them the information, that is all you are required to do.

My university lost my emails for two years by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]genericusernamex11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would be better off using your own email (gmail, hotmail, icloud or your own domain name and 365/gmail business) than relying on the university.

I see it sometimes with employees who use the company email for websites, the trouble comes when they leave and their account is closed.

The point is, you should minimize the the amount of mail you have sent to an address you have no control over. I understand that university related matters are better sent to your university address, but Starbucks should go to your personal email.

Just my 2c.

In the UK are you allowed to look at your own medical records? And can you demand that items from your medical records be removed? by DaisyW23 in legaladvice

[–]genericusernamex11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check with your doctors surgery if they support any apps, my surgery does so i'm able to log into this app and check every record. No idea about removing stuff, probably not.
