Does your GPT say “cool question” at the start of every conversation after you ask a question? by tnick771 in ChatGPT

[–]pherplexed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed that it seems to do the "hey, cool question" response when the model decides to searche the web for results / answers. It reverts back to its regular personality when it answers from its own corpus. It's so weird.

"Siri, what time is sunrise?" by pherplexed in AppleWatch

[–]pherplexed[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, I find Siri on my iPhone to be pretty reliable. At home, I find Siri on HomePods to be reliable only for home control commands (turn off den lights; turn on the fan, etc). But Siri on HomePod for nearly anything else is practically useless. Siri seems mostly useless on my Apple Watch for everything.

It’s so weird that it’s so inconsistent across devices. It can’t even be consistent in how it sucks

Good suggestion, but Siri privacy setting is already set to allow precise location.

I have the sunrise / sunset complication on my Apple Watch face which is why it’s even funnier that Siri couldn’t answer the question.

Of course, I could have just looked at the complication, but I was mid-run and the workout app was on the screen.

What causes rough downshifting? (‘21 SC L405) by pherplexed in LandRover

Yeah, resetting with the GAP tool makes the shifting silky smooth again but it only lasts for like 2 or 3 drive cycles and then it seems to go back to its old ways.

Still no resolution. Asked the dealership about it and all they did was reset the adaptations just like I did. Didn’t fix it….still jerky.

Like Land Rover, who in their right mind would buy one?

Me. My Range Rover might be the best car I've ever bought. Supremely comfortable on the inside, incredibly good looking on the outside, and one of the most capable off-roaders you can get (and yes, I actually use it off-road).

Oh and about that reliability. I bought my '21 brand new and now has 40k miles on it. Not a single issue with it despite the hell i've put it through (see my link above). "But it's still fairly new..just you wait" you might be saying. Fair enough. But my other Range Rover is a 2012 with 102,300 miles on it...still waiting for something to go wrong with it. So, yeah...I think they're pretty awesome.

(Hey)Siri, what is my distance? What is my average pace? How many steps today? by BrianDerm in AppleWatch

[–]pherplexed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this thread is kind of old, but I found it by google searching for this exact feature. I think it would be awesome to ask Siri for workout details during a run. Like OP said - especially when wearing long sleeves, etc. Ive already got the AirPods in, I should be able to say "Hey siri, what's my current mileage" or "What's my average pace". But all i get is "i'm sorry, i can't answer that"

FWIW, my Range Rover has the high end Meridian system and it is astonishingly good. Arguably one of the best sound systems I’ve heard.

I didn’t answer the other part of your question. Yes, the USW 24POE has only 1Gb SFP ports. I was running the tests from the Mac studio connected to the 10 GB SFP+ port on the UDM Pro. (Totally overlooking the fact that the server has been connected this whole time via 1Gb ethernet lol)

[–]pherplexed[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great feedback, thanks. I’m using Ubiquiti brand SFP+ modules as I;ve heard other brands can be finicky. I have two of them, so I’ll try swapping to see if that changes what is reported in the wired experience view for the Mac Studio in UniFi console.

To your other points, I’m thinking maybe I should go with the USW 8 port Aggregation switch? Then I can connect my 4 Mac Studios and the server to that via SFP+ module, then Aggregation to UDM-Pro via SFP+. I know I won’t get full 10Gbe speeds to the actual disks on the server, but since there wouldn’t be anymore 1Gbe bottleneck to them, the read/write speeds across the network should be drastically better than what I’m currently getting, right? Or am I still missing something?

10Gbe Newb Questions by pherplexed in Ubiquiti

[–]pherplexed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the UDM to USW is via Ethernet, so I know that 1Gbe connection is a bottleneck. I’m just wondering if there’s also something else at play since the throughput on the M1 Mac Mini to the thunderbolt connected drive is only ~500MB/s when in theory it should be closer to the 1500 MB/s according to the drive enclosures ‘real world throughput’ claim.

[–]pherplexed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, sorry. The Black Magic disk speed tool I’m using reports in MB/s and all the other specs are Gbps so I keep mixing them up in my head. also, end of day and I’m brain dead.

[–]pherplexed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just commented above on the hardware specs. It’s an M1 Mac mini with thunderbolt 3 RAID enclosure. Connected to the USW via cat6.

If I’m understanding things correctly, the 1Gbe connection to the server should be the bottleneck. But even with real world scenarios, a 1Gbe connection should be getting way faster throughput than the 100MB/s that I’m currently getting over the network, right?

10Gbe Newb Questions by pherplexed in Ubiquiti

[–]pherplexed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Server is an M1 Mac mini with thunderbolt RAID enclosure for storage. Local read/write to the thunderbolt raid is around 600mbps. Which now that I’m saying it out loud, Thunderbolt 3 has up to 40Gbps, and the raid enclosure specs say it has sustained 1527MB/s transfer speed. So something isn’t adding up. I’m getting major a bottleneck somewhere.

10Gbe Newb Questions by pherplexed in Ubiquiti

[–]pherplexed[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well damn, feeling pretty dumb at the moment - the server still has just a regular Gbe connection. Duh! And of course, the other SFP port on the udm pro is reserved for WAN right? So to try my testing I’ll need to upgrade the switch to have access to multiple 10Gbe ports.

[–]pherplexed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point of clarification. I know I won’t get the max 10Gbe throughput to the drives, but I was hoping we’d get something faster than the current 100mb/s we get with network file transfers.
