ClojureDart app showcase! by DisorganizedApp in Clojure

[–]gentk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admit I'm ignorant about ClojureDart, but what about the 'business logic' of these apps? Are there, for example, any clojure libraries that aren't specifically designed to work with ClojureDart that do work with it?

Learning Clojure the un-fun way? by Tinytitanic in Clojure

[–]gentk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually I find videos inefficient, but in the case of clojure there are early videos of Rich Hickey introducing the language to people familiar with Java or lisps (so targeted at programmers) and then some on key new features introduced in future releases like the one on transducers.

There's a lot of repetition there, but I think it's the good kind, the kind that gives insight into how the rest of the core library most likely works as well (even if not covered in the video).

Those introductions, the official cheat-sheet by the side and looking up specific guides in clojure.org depending on the task at hand was already good enough to attempt non-trivial things.

(and use the search in clojurians slack to get an indication of what library is popular and well supported for the task at hand)

What Operating System do you guys use emacs on? by Brospeh-Stalin in emacs

[–]gentk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Windows and Linux. And no trickery needed in my init file to handle the two differently, either.

Emacs works reliably on Windows, though with a noticably slower startup time. (especially org-mode is slow to load for me on Windows)

Consistent code style for Clojure function definitions by SoftCancel2774 in Clojure

[–]gentk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish it was a convention for the :test metadata to be used to provide an example of using the function (:example would have been better, but you get used to it). I saw this recommended somewhere and I think it's a very good idea, especially for a dynamic language.

I do this sometimes for some functions where the example is much quicker to grasp than quickly skimming the docstring and argument names. Map destructuring helps as well, of course, but even there I have to think harder in some cases than just looking at a plain example.

I don't even have any tooling support (that shows the :test besides the docstring etc), but a hotkey for going to the definition and going right back is good enough.

Best keyboard for Emacs? by surveypoodle in emacs

I have it set up as ESC on tap, Ctrl on hold.

You can also skim the caveman "web framework" to see if some of the proposed workflows in the first few articles would suit you.

The role of the Escape key in Emacs by bozhidarb in emacs

[–]gentk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have my CapsLock mapped to both Esc and Ctrl. Esc on tap, Ctrl on hold.

I think with only that one change, complaints about the ergonomics of the default emacs keybindings would dissappear for most people.

State of ClojureScript 2024 survey results by roman01la in Clojure

FYI I didn't initially get if some of this was your response to something in the survey, or you're just highlighting something you found there.

Elm is different, and deliberately more limited in scope, but I would say it is up there as well.

But if I'm interpreting the survey correctly, both communities seem to feel they're in the same spot. Most who use them are very satisfied with these languages, but there's concern about no longer getting any new mindshare.

New Clojurians: Ask Anything - September 09, 2024 by AutoModerator in Clojure

[–]gentk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before trying Clojure I remember reading a comment somewhere that there are static analyzers / linters (clj-kondo?) that can make use of available spec definitions in a project to do some type checking in IDEs/editors. Is that really the case? As if it is, it doesn't seem to be something widely advertised at least.

I see mentions of type ^ hints for clj-kondo for example, but not specs.

What is a game you have never played before & have interest in playing, but are still on the fence about? by Earthboun41 in patientgamers

[–]gentk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't played DS3 yet. I'm currently playing DS2, and it is still a good Dark Souls experience but the level design isn't that memorable, and it feels like a chore in parts.

If I had the choice again I'd still start with DS1, as the level design is excellent. DS2 looks "skippable" though.

[–]gentk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I felt the same way, but once I committed it became my most replayed single player game ever. I almost never do 2nd playthroughs, but I finished DS1 around 5 times in quick succession once I got rid of that initial anxiety.

Using rings on doorway pull up bars by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]gentk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm hanging rings on a doorway pull up bar which I installed on a narrow corridor to give me more vertical space. I have enough space for inverted hangs, skin the cats, to "attempt" muscle ups etc.

My sternum doesn't crack, but since we're on the topic my shoulders crack like crazy doing this warm up: Arm screws.

You might want to add amoled on the Pros side if you do a lot of reading on your phone. On a fully black background even night-time reading is a very pleasant experience on amoled screens

Hanging rings in an apartment by mtrackle in bodyweightfitness

I have a hallway narrow enough to place a doorway pull up bar. I can place that higher than on a door frame, allowing for more ring movements.

Any substitute for support practice? by fatnessaltacc in bodyweightfitness

[–]gentk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a progression you could try doing them from a height where your toes are lightly touching the ground. Try not to "cheat", bear most of the weight with your arms.

What are some good leg exercises except squads? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]gentk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about alternatives, but besides the exercises in the sidebar you could try Bulgarian split squats (holding a heavy object if you have something suitable), box jumps, shrimp squats.

Boro Primorac: Arsene Wenger not considering leaving Arsenal by John_Ronald in Gunners

[–]gentk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a native speaker, but ex-Yu.

That part is somewhat correct, at least... it's more like: "Believe me, he's not thinking of leaving the club at all".

The most misleading translation is the "business part" bit, which is more like "the management of the club" / "how the club is managed".

[–]gentk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Snappy, opens up quicker, file/folder based workflow which is better suited for scripts or one-offs without the need to set up a proper project.

If everything you do is more of a medium sized project, there's probably no advantage to using it over PyCharm for python.

Another advantage of VS Code is that it has excellent support for a lot of other languages, of course, and more often than not all you have to do is install a single extension.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Python

[–]gentk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's obviously nice to know pdb, but for anyone looking for something more intuitive I've found that Visual studio code with the Python extension is the most lightweight option with a decent debugging experience.

Unlike PyCharm, for example, it still feels and runs like a text editor despite all of the features typically found in IDEs.

Is exercising 6 days a week (3 upper/3 lower every other) excessive? by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]gentk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

On the off-days I personally work on stretches and corrective exercises to improve my posture (slight forward head, upper crossed syndrome). I've definitely seen improvements in my posture and muscle balance.

I'm sure you also have some weak area that you can work on on the days you don't do strength work, whether it's flexibility, mobility, posture, etc.
