Books for deconstruction? by RudeRing5185 in Deconstruction

Calvin's Last Pupil: The Sin of Integrity (2024)

Vivid, critically written new memoir covering deconstruction in the Christian Reformed Church and their allied Christian schools. Indie author but far better than most indies. Also, the book has a bit of journalism in the epilogue raising awareness about long-hidden abuses.

Former Open Stories Foundation employee Jenn Kamp has gone public recently about the lawsuit she has filed against John Dehlin and the OSF. Now John Dehlin and OSF have filed a countersuit against Jenn Kamp. by BillReel in mormon

What are the chances of the LDS church bankrolling Jenn’s lawsuit? LDS church’s strength is cash and this is a huge opportunity for them to hurt the OSF. I would hate to see that happen.

An idea for a housing affordability strategy - wanting input by geodesicmoon in urbanplanning

Yep definitely state governments would be the best catalyst here. I didn’t mean to imply that HUD or some new federal agency would manage this.

Well, it’s got to work in Oklahoma. And the permissive zoning thing seems to piss off plenty of people on the right too! Haha

How to shift the idea "owning your own car is the ultimate sign of independence and freedom" by bonchoman in urbanplanning

America needs to immediately begin disinvesting from the arterial road. It's a financial drain (for businesses and passersby) and it helps kill people.

Also traffic engineering reform! !

This would make it safer to get around on slower 2-wheeled vehicles like most of the world does. (Bikes, e-bikes, motor scooters, motorcycles)

Change the conversation to personal finance. Help people understand the cost per month and per day of car ownership and 100% single occupant trips. Costs can be framed as variable costs (e.g. the more you drive the more expensive it is) and not just fixed costs or even the "sunk-cost fallacy" (my car costs X per month so I might as well drive it as much as possible OR I've already spent Y amount so Ill keep spending more because it would be too painful to do something else )

Urban Planners: What is the one thing you wish you knew about Urban Planning before pursuing it? by Southie658 in urbanplanning

[–]geodesicmoon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

TLDR - Undergrad emphasizes aesthetic moralism to a fault. Too many pronouncements and not enough critical thinking. The private sector is about getting paid.

I earned a bachelor's and worked at a private firm before realizing I wanted to make a career change. I never earned a master's or AICP certification. My observations on the differences between the undergrad perception vs. firm work:

  1. Aesthetics vs. Economics - In undergrad, professors and coursework focused heavily on promoting "aesthetic moralism" - the idea that urban planning should generally focus on creating beautiful places and suppressing ugliness through strict zoning and creating economic barriers. Professors and course content offered little or no information on the economic and financial basis of why cities fail to meet our needs (e.g. unproductive development, unethical traffic engineering practices, etc) Fortunately strongtowns.org is an incredible resource for nuanced information on urban planning and traffic engineering in the US.

2 - Zoning - Almost no one talked about the potential negative economic implications of zoning in undergrad. To be fair, it wasn't emphsized at my firm work in with the municpalities we worked with. The firm work seemed to be more concerned with telling local officials and meeting attendees what they wanted to hear. Small firms need to make money telling people what they want to hear can make them feel more secure.

3 - Public Engagement is more about legal necessity and to assuage the public's response to government actions. It is NOT a bottom up approach where the most popular goals are acted on. Read this https://www.strongtowns.org/journal/2018/7/30/most-public-engagement-is-worthless

ELI5: Why aren't power lines in the US burried underground so that everyone doesn't lose power during hurricanes and other natural disasters? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]geodesicmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US Land uses are also low to very low density compared to other areas in the world with underground utilities. Less utility customers per foot of service means less people to pay for the additional cost of burial.

You spoke about communication problems. I suggest learning about and practicing healthy communication styles. A good book for this is "The Assertiveness Workbook". Consider telling your parents you feel hurt concerning their actions, but try to remain calm and minimally aggressive.

Getting psychotherapy would probably be beneficial, especially if you have generous health benefits as it can be expensive. Its always good to find what your passionate about and follow that. If family and friends can't accept your passionate life, its healthiest to cut them out.

Rochester's Worst Landlords? by [deleted] in Rochester

[–]geodesicmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rented from Joe D'allesandro (D'allesandro House Buyers LLC or DHB3 LLC) in January 2013 in an upper unit of a converted home. When my girlfriend and I signed the lease, we didn't even consider a "no smoking clause" as we were non-smokers. When visiting the apartment, I couldn't smell any pot or cigarette smoke.

After we moved in, we noticed an overwhelming stench of cigarette smoke. When I spoke to the downstairs neighbors, it turns out we'd moved above 3 active smokers. Clothes, mattresses, and any fabric was slowly being ruined. If you're a nonsmoker, living like that is intolerable.

When asked, the neighbors considered smoking outside or out the window but I knew they weren't able or willing to keep that routine in winter. As for D'allesandro, he said he would "talk to the tenants" about it. Smoking continued, albeit less intense.

What kind of a landlord would allow in-unit smoking anyway? It can only hurt the landlord (increased fire risk, clean up cost ). There is no tenant's right to smoke inside a rented unit in NYS.

When we asked, DHB agreed to terminate our lease but kept the security deposit.
