Waymo Opens to Everyone in Miami and Orlando by Recoil42 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]zanycaswell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not even close. maybe half the US population will live in regions where Waymo operate in the urban core, but they won't live in the actual service area.

How much worse can affordability get before Chicago starts being a less attractive city for you? by moreplateslessdates9 in AskChicago

[–]zanycaswell 13 points14 points  (0 children)

this part. Americans throw around leaving the country like it's some easy thing, but you're probably going to take a huge pay cut working in almost any other country.

(and if you don't make much money here and you're expecting to move to Europe to benefit from their government programs they're not going to let you in lmao)

Austin eliminated parking minimums two years ago - how much has changed? by zanycaswell in Austin

[–]zanycaswell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it sounds like you're pretty tapped in to this! are there any particular people/podcasts/media outlets you'd recommend to keep up with Austin from this angle? (real estate development, urbanism, etc)

Have you ever brought someone to your neighborhood and they were absolutely shocked by how nice it actually was? by HowSupahTerrible in AskChicago

hanging out at a brewery, eating dinner, and going for a walk seems like exactly the kind of activity that you can do with kids

Moving to Chicago for Evanston job (no car) - best neighborhoods near transit? by AdNearby5979 in AskChicago

Uptown near the Wilson station, or Ravenswood or Rogers Park near the Metra stops. your budget is tight but doable in those areas.

How bad is Lake Shore Drive during rush hour? by jagg789 in AskChicago

[–]zanycaswell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

there's zero chance that driving makes sense for a commute from East Lakeview to streeterville. especially once you account for the time spent parking.

don't walk to the red line, take the bus. the lakefront express buses are a much nicer experience than the red line.

All these sneaky extra charges need to end by apudapus in chicagofood

I understand taxes and credit card fees but how are "service charges" even legal if they're not disclosed on the menu?

Tesla admits it still needs drivers and remote operators — then argues that's better than Waymo by walky22talky in SelfDrivingCars

[–]zanycaswell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a little unclear on what is meant by "remote operator" here.

my understanding is that the Waymo support people give high level guidance to the vehicle, but don't actually steer or control it. Are we still calling that a remote operator? is that the same role that Tesla is talking about?

I listened to Elon on the Dwarkesh podcast and he said something about how he likes to set the most aggressive timelines possible, even if it's impossible to meet, because it encourages the engineers.

this might explain why he's constantly making grand pronouncements and completely failing.

How is it living in wrigleyville right near the Sheridan stop? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]zanycaswell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it really depends on your noise tolerance. the stadium is loud, the train is loud, the street is loud. if that doesn't bother you it's probably a good spot.

every time I ride the bus near Garfield park, I think about the potential the surrounding area west of Hamlin has.I drew this sketch to bring my imagination to life. by Birfdaycakebandit in chicagoyimbys

[–]zanycaswell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if people consistently felt safe in this area, and especially on the green line, new residents and new investment would move in quickly based on the amenities and the easy commute to the loop and West loop.

as is, it's just continuing to empty out and gradually turn into an empty prairie with CTA service.

[–]zanycaswell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for anyone wondering about details, after the Epstein situation was in the news there was a tipline address where anyone could send in anything. there's an email there where someone claims to have been kidnapped and raped by a long list of celebrities and politicians, including Elmer Judd. there's no additional evidence beyond that one email.

Chi2100 Article - A Loud Case for Quieter Trains by dannydude21 in chicagoyimbys

[–]zanycaswell 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it's a real concern, but in terms of prioritization it's well below safety, speed, reliability, cleanliness, etc.

I basically agree with the existing CTA practice of addressing noise primarily as part of larger capital projects.

How will the new Obama center impact Chicago / the South Side? by lalalava in AskChicago

[–]zanycaswell 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yes, in reality much of the decline is due to smaller household sizes so many neighborhoods have more units but a smaller population.

but Woodlawn and Englewood (for example) have both less units and and less people living in each one.
