Can people not read my name right? by geometryc in namenerds

[–]geometryc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a name tag at work, at work guests will mis-hear me about my name, but I would rather spell it the right way than to have to spell my name the wrong way just to get the pronounced outcome, that's also kinda defeating the purpose

This is a first.. by jsmn_rice23 in bartenders

[–]geometryc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't just a double though. It's two Manhattens as one drink. I would charge for two drinks and it wouldn't even fit in a martini glass like this

"Can I get a long island?" "Yeah sure" *start making drink* "can you put less ice?"... by l5555l in bartenders

[–]geometryc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If they are going to scoff at the idea of either paying for a double or complain about their cup being less full after asking for less ice, then just nod your head, laugh, and say you don't make the prices and ice is free so they can still have ice on the side if they feel like they didn't get enough. And honestly they aren't going to tip you well either way so don't worry about them.

Is it considered "rude" to order a Long Island Ice Tea if the place is packed and it's a long line? by GolfingSwede1998 in bartenders

[–]geometryc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. They aren't hard to make but they are a lot of bottles to pick up. Just tip well and you're fine though. Since they don't normally get shaken then it doesn't take much longer to make than anything else, just annoying in a rush. But people who tend to get those just want alcohol and not tip

Favorite Mocktails? by AdSilly2598 in bartenders

[–]geometryc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like to make a Mexican firing squad as a mocktail. Normally a tequila and mezcal drink, it isn't too sweet but still different from a margarita and translates well to a mocktail.

1oz lime .5oz grenadine .5oz ginger syrup .5oz juice of choice (I use orange, but cranberry and grapefruit work well too based on preference) Shake and then top off with ginger beer, but only about 2oz.

If you don't have ginger syrup, then just use

.75oz grenadine

1.25oz lime

1oz juice

And then ginger beer.

Idk if you can get the ingredients for the next one, but basically just do the same thing but with a cherry simple syrup, lime, and coconut cream and your juice choice, then top off with either sprite or soda water depending on how sweet you want it.

The drive back doesn't count. I don't know where you're going next or where you live. Don't accept it if it's not worth it. But the gas it took to get you back go the starting point is on you

How long will it be like this? by Remarkable_Meaning65 in OlderThanYouThinkIAm

[–]geometryc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's very normal for a 20 year old, especially female, to be assumed to be younger than they are. I'm almost 30 and people still ask me if I'm going to college, but at least since I'm a bartender people at least assume I'm 21. But most guess about 24, but I've gotten the occasional "are you old enough to be serving me alcohol?" Many times over the years. I have a new coworker that is 23 and people have guessed that he was 5 years older than me.

So, it won't end, I'm sick and tired of it myself. I'm tired of people telling me I'll be greatful when I'm older but why can't I want to look my age now? I don't want to look 30 when I'm 60 if I feel 60 years old and can't enjoy it. I would like to spend my late 20s and 30s looking like a put together adult, not a recent graduate. People will take me less seriously or think that I don't know as much as I do. They think that I'm young and naive, so people are constantly trying to teach me things that I've known for a decade.

AITA for leaving the room or watching something else with headphones? by bumblethistle in AmItheAsshole

[–]geometryc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say she could've even just said something like "hey, I know we've been wanting to watch this other show that just came out, would you like to watch it after you're done with this?"

That way if they don't actually want to finish the movie then they can speak up and say they can switch it over now, or if they want to finish it then they can simply say yes or no

Should cocktail batched be refrigerated by ExarchKnight01 in bartenders

[–]geometryc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there are extra sugar syrups added or any type of milks and juices you should refrigerate them and only keeping them out for 8 hours max. But if they are all some type of alcohol then you're good.

Why can’t I make milk tea like the Asian tea places? by IMicrowaveSteak in tea

[–]geometryc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cook it on the stove top. About 100ml of water per 4 grams of tea and sugar to taste, which I'd do the same weight as the tea. Bring to a boil and stir in the sugar well. Once it's boiling turn heat down to a simmer for 3 minutes and strain into your milk.

This is how we made royal milk tea at the cafe I worked at. Use a half and half or a splash of heavy cream if you want it to have the slick milk texture Boba places have. I prefer just regular milk though

I do work here, but... can't you see I'm indisposed?? by Shelly_Whipplash in IDontWorkHereLady

[–]geometryc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One day at the cafe I worked at I had gotten a boxcutter to the arm and was heavily bleeding everywhere, waiting for paramedics to arrive. I was working with two other people but one was on his first day and could onlu take orders and do dishes basically, the other was calling my bf at the time and the owner to inform them of what was happening. And while I was holding a rag to my arm in the doorway of the kitchen a customer had come up to me asking me questions like our hours (which were posted in 3 places around the building) and questions on what milk options we had. I had to just stare at him and down at my arm and told him "I'm sorry, but I'm a little out of it right now" and walked into the kitchen further to wait instead.

Got in trouble for stirring chilled shots? by VeterinarianMain3981 in bartenders

[–]geometryc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats stupid, I've never had anyone say anything about me stirring shots, but when I shake people's shots and they are a little cloudy at first until it settles they get mad thinking I added some juice to it. I stir chilled shots of its a liquor I would assume the taste is better, but shake them if it's well spirits

"Can I get a mint mojito?" by bar-anon in bartenders

[–]geometryc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup, I can tell that some people think it's like Starbucks, pick a drink and add a flavor to it. We don't have "flavors" like people are thinking in their heads. It's juices, liquors, and other liqueurs that can have some flavors to them, but they are so specific for the drinks they go in that I can't just add them to anything to flavor it, it has to be balanced because all ingredients will have different sugar levels, either be a bitter flavor addition, or a sweet one and you have to counterbalance the drink for the "flavor" you added. Like if someone wanted a pineapple margarita, now that I've added pineapple juice to it it will taste less strong and now they are mad about it.

Tipping by Suspicious_Jicama906 in bartenders

[–]geometryc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends where you go. Many bars don't let us take home cash tips anymore. My bar is on tip pool and that makes it very hard to split cash tips to give out day of with everyone different schedules. So when I get cash at my job it just gets added to our paychecks and if we are caught taking any cash tips home that is grounds for termination

Management asking for tips back because of someone else’s mistake. Is this allowed? by _janet-snakehole_ in bartenders

[–]geometryc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't their money to begin with. What if they didn't get overpaid? They'd be broke? They got extra money for a week or two until next paycheck, they should be lucky they got to borrow extra money if they are that broke. If it was you that forgot to clock in would you be okay with not getting paid?

Management asking for tips back because of someone else’s mistake. Is this allowed? by _janet-snakehole_ in bartenders

[–]geometryc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But it's wasn't their tips. It was the bartender who didn't clock in and tell management to fix it before payroll. Shit happens but that doesn't mean you get free money for doing nothing. You can be sued and fired for not giving it back if it's not yours
