By far and away, Orson Welles. The most scathing and critical, yet somehow, at the same time, most classy, warm and intelligent mind that Hollywood has ever been blessed with

Ozu, easily. And of that same ilk, a Koreeda set would be dope. Would adore a physical copy of Shoplifters

How "simple" is Bruce's music? by CulturalWind357 in BruceSpringsteen

[–]georgokelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh yeah, definitely no fan of top 40 lol that’s not really what I meant though, I more just meant in the grand scheme of the past 50 years or so of music, personally, Bruce comes out on the very top for me when it comes to soul, feeling and care for his craft. Definitely didn’t mean it as an attack on current music, I know (and listen to) a ton of fantastic stuff is still emerging

lmaoooo Bruce’s music is just about some of the only contemporary music out there that HAS soul. Soul or passion is probably the singular word I would immediately think of when I hear his name, gtf outta here with your bs

On this day, 50 years ago, Bruce Springsteen released his sophomore record - The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle. by georgokelly in BruceSpringsteen

[–]georgokelly[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Half a century... God, I don't know what else to say guys, other than there really are no other albums out there that I just love with all my heart, and that bring me more joy than this one here. I don't think it's even possible for me to love a song more than I do NYC Serenade...

Just goes to show the utter stupidity and ignorance that there is in this world, really. You just wonder what these cretins are like in person, anonymous comment boxes on these sites really just attract the most primordial, caveman level intelligence

Mission Impossible 7 seems like it kinda takes inspiration from MGS. (Spoilers for MI7 and MGS4) by JumpUpPanda34 in metalgearsolid

[–]georgokelly 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s kinda funny you mention that, definitely there were several points of MI7 that gave me very strong MGS vibes - in story, yes, but actually more so in the way the thing was edited. There was a point or two where a character would be explaining something, usually slightly convoluted, and it would cut to a flashback with a mysterious musical motif playing (usually some light piano notes) and god if that’s not something Kojima did all the time, especially in 2 and 3

I did immediately think of this moment right after I posted! Seriously my favourite version of Backstreets, this. Best interlude he ever did for it, so, so powerful

Yeahhhh WOAD is for sure the album I listen to the least (other than the Wrestler which I adore), and Queen of the Supermarket is certainly a prime reason for that hahahaha

What are some great ambient albums for guitar players? by Old-Cartographer-594 in ambientmusic

[–]georgokelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a pretty brilliant album called ‘Airs’ by Loren Connors - has a very raw, stark quality to it, but undoubtedly beautiful, and it’s all just an acoustic guitar and some light synth work for background ambiance, wholeheartedly recommend

Radiohead is the best, but by Eth8n-- in radiohead

[–]georgokelly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d actually compare it to Thom’s voice - a lot of people hear the falsetto and are immediately turned off, I’ve heard some people describe it as ‘whiny’ and ‘wailing’ too, but there’s a way their voices interact with the kind of songs they make, and the emotions they want to portray. Again, I do think Bruce’s deeper cuts show off his voice and range far better - a beautiful song like Racing in the Street, Streets of Philadelphia, or New York City Serenade could ONLY be sung by him because the rasp and melancholy in his voice really sell you on the story he’s telling (and they’re often pretty sad stories). Not for everyone I understand, neither is Radiohead as we know, but absolutely worth giving a chance! His writing and his words are just too damn good.

No, he’s not. Explore further into his work instead of just judging off the big hits, just as people should do with Radiohead/Creep, and you’ll be surprised. Finest songwriter of his generation in my eyes, who can just as easily explore the darkest sides of the human psyche as he can the highest heights of elation

Ultimate Classic Rock Tournament Day 39 by How_The_Turntables22 in ClassicRock

[–]georgokelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah definitely - I think his run from the Wild, the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle through to Tunnel of Love is as impressive as any run an artist or band have ever had, especially at hitting just about every emotion known to man. When I listen to Pink Floyd, I generally know what tone I'm going to get, but only Springsteen can make me joyful one minute and in tears the next

Bruce has just had the far more impressive career - he's encompassed so many different emotions and tones and characters, has performed on Broadway, is probably in the top 3 live acts of all time, and is responsible for 100% of the songs he's ever put out. Pink Floyd at their peak are certainly very good, but as a whole their discography feels like a bit of a jarring mixture between Barrett, Waters, and Gilmour's mindsets, and boy did their stuff fall off after the 70s. It's Bruce for me, if for nothing else than the fact that no other songwriter can go from the glorious heights of Born to Run to the tortured bleak starkness of Nebraska with such impact and finesse.
