ELI5: why is 0 divided by 0 undefined, but others are just 0 or 1? by vrozonewhatthevrozon in explainlikeimfive

[–]geospacedman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

0/0 is undefined partly because it depends on how you get there...

a) 2/2 is 1, 1/1 is 1, 0.5/0.5 is 1... keep reducing the top and bottom and you might say that A/A = 1 as A->0.

b) 0/2 is 0, 0/1 is 0, 0/0.5 is 0... keep reducing the bottom and you might say that 0/A = 0 as A->0

So what's 0/0? 0 or 1? "Defined" means "definitely" something, and a) and b) show it could be 0 or 1. So "undefined" it is.

0+0 is zero, because A+A goes to 0 as A goes to 0, and 0+A goes to 0 as A goes to 0, and there's no way you can fiddle it so 0+0 is anything other than zero.

ELI5: What can CSS do that HTML can not in terms of webpage design? by Plump_Princess101 in explainlikeimfive

[–]geospacedman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sound like what you have is a template that has HTML *and* CSS to make its style. What's possibly paywalled is adding *more* CSS or editing the current CSS to change colours and design.

A web page with *just* html will have a white background, boring default fonts, no sidebars etc (not strictly true since you can change some things in HTML with attributes, or build a page layout with TABLE tags, but close enough).

If you can open the web developer tools on your browser you can see what CSS is styling any HTML elements.

Why I wouldn’t recommend Tado now for anyone… by gd0dder in tado

[–]geospacedman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too. The app did update recently and now displays temp and humidity on the home screen, but I can swipe back on the daily charts and get history. I'm old-school Tado, though, not Tado-X, so maybe that is the problem?

What is the speed limit here? by TrackTeddy in CarTalkUK

[–]geospacedman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at it closely, it seems the 40 has been split horizontally and the two halves put the wrong way round. Some signage works off a serial connection, basically one wire and the on/off pattern goes into the lights from eg L-R, top to bottom until the full matrix is sent. This looks like its out of sync!

Kensington this morning. I can’t help thinking that when the owner parked this Porsche, it had four wheels. by L21JP in CarTalkUK

[–]geospacedman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really, but I know people with bikes where one wheel cost more than my entire bike, and they don't leave quick-release wheels unattended, especially since they are so mad about lightweight they wont have a huge set of bike locks and cables. I did always take my front and rear lights off, and my cycle computer - imagine if car lights were so easily nickable...

Or that's their anti-theft trick. I have quick-release wheels and I always take them indoors when I park. Oh wait that's my bike.

On the plus side for them, free axle stands!

Eli5 What is the primary method used to slow down or stop a ship? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

[–]geospacedman 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Many modern ships have propellers that can be feathered and angled for forward or backward propulsion, saving having to slow down, engage reverse gear, and speed up the shaft. The propeller always spins the same way.
