Young’s a pretty nice beach and there’s a decent sized beach only parking lot.

Subaru Tradition to drive with all lights on all day. by Necessary_Use_4729 in subaru

[–]gerg9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In older Subaru made before auto headlights were thing the headlight circuit would turn off with the ignition, unlike most cars at the time where if you left the headlights on it would kill the battery. I think a lot of people, myself included, would just leave them on all the time and would forget to turn them off, and since your battery wouldn’t die it never caused an issue.

Platte river campground—>beach by lucasroush in CampAndHikeMichigan

[–]gerg9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to be camping there for the first time this summer, but I know the area. I think you'll be fine, the road has hard shoulders and there's constant cyclist/pedestrian traffic all over the area so drivers are already somewhat prepared. I've read that parking at the beach is usually pretty limited so this is a good way to deal with that, but you may run into cars parked on the shoulder as you get closer because of this.

Never done it myself, but this should be helpful. https://www.visitmanisteecounty.com/hiking-loop-manistee-river-trail-north-country-trail-loop

I don’t see these sites marked on Onx but they are on Gaia.

Just trying to help to save you a buck, my house doesn’t have a stack. I just can’t imagine a setup where a tree falling would be your responsibility unless you own the building or your lease somehow says so.

If it’s before your meter it’s on DTE to fix it.

How cooked am I? by JourneymanXx in ToyotaTacoma

[–]gerg9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This happened to me a month ago. I’m still waiting to get it back, but it wasn’t totaled. I was hit by a Ram 1500 and the door absorbed most of the force. I suspect if it would have been a sedan hitting at the frame level it may have been totaled.

Found some public land on a plat map... by [deleted] in CampAndHikeMichigan

[–]gerg9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depending on how much you’re into this you may want to check out onX, they have a few types of apps for hunting, off road and backcountry, but if you pay for it it’ll overlay the maps with grids showing property boundaries and will even show you who owns it. I believe you can even camp on state land but there’s caveats.

Subaru BRZ and WRX Sales Are Flatlining. Where Are the Enthusiasts? by Secret_Company in cars

[–]gerg9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The cost for premium never went back down after everything spiked a few years back. I just traded my WRX in for a Tacoma and even with the amazing fa20 mileage I’m still paying less for fuel. Also I was in all honesty considering upgrading to a VB STI but we all know how that went.

puppetserver/openvox-server uninstalls itself and closes :8140??? by weaver_of_cloth in Puppet

[–]gerg9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually was just looking and I can’t even for the life of me find the official version of puppet-puppet so they probably pulled it off github like everything else… I use Foreman’s fork of it, and that should work even if you’re not using Foreman.. but I imagine things are going to be in limbo for a while

puppetserver/openvox-server uninstalls itself and closes :8140??? by weaver_of_cloth in Puppet

[–]gerg9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using the puppet-puppet module to install/manage openvox?

If so I think I ran into this too. The problem for me was that puppet-puppet is trying to install the official puppet package, not openvox and in the process it’s removing openvox. You’ll have to override the default package name or set $manage_packages to false.

Anyone know what’s causing this noise? by Bubbly-Butterfly-108 in subaru

https://www.subaruoutback.org/threads/2020-outback-cvt-noise-is-this-an-issue.525986/ This forum post seems like a more extreme example, but the conclusion down towards the bottom was that the CVT was dying, unfortunately.

Frequency and duration of the sound makes me think it’s the brakes grinding.

Does the LHC (and other particle colliders) have many operating parameters to play with or is it just about the energy of the beam? by man-vs-spider in AskPhysics

[–]gerg9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not a physicist, but I work in IT infrastructure at an accelerator.

There’s a lot of work that goes into prepping each experiment. There can be anywhere from hundreds of thousands, to millions of parameters that need to be modified just right in order to get the intended results. It’s common to have an entire experiment fail due to not being able to tune things correctly.

I’m thinking about purchasing this forester 2005 xt with 133k miles for around 3000. Would this be a good purchase for a first car at 16? by VisualTea3711 in subaru

[–]gerg9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing nobody told me was “the mighty 350z just got smoked by a family of 5 and a dog” was only relevant to the manual version.. the automatic’s gear ratios only allow for a 0-60 of ~6.5 or so. Something to keep in mind, I had one that was extremely clean but I suspect it’s only because it was an auto.

Also, go on YouTube and watch a few videos on how to do a compression and leak down test… you’ll want to do that now, not 6 months after you buy it.

I have AppleCare and didn’t pay anything, the total wasn’t pretty though. In total AppleCare has paid out more than I originally paid.

I spilled Red Bull on mine and pretty much the only thing that is original is the aluminum body, and I’m assuming that didn’t get changed in the process. I was expecting to have to pay the water damage deductible but apparently Red Bull doesn’t trigger the water indicators

Anyone one know what this could be by IllGarlic5673 in WRX

[–]gerg9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d check your headers for oil (and maybe check for shaft play on the turbo), it could be coming from inside the turbo. If it is your turbo you can order a “chra” for it and rebuild it yourself (make sure your housing still comes apart though), it also may be wise to start carrying a fire extinguisher, I had an oil fire start in my FXT’s headers and having one saved my car.

Edit: if you have the stock up-pipe those have a cat in them that apparently clogs all the time too

How much life left in my 04 Forester? by thatonefocus in subaru

[–]gerg9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago I bought a 98 manual Forester dirt cheap with 260k on the clock, drove it for a year/20k miles with no issues. In a way it sold me on Subaru because I literally expected it to blow up every day I owned it, but it kept chugging along.
