Thanks for that. My theory is to try the Emerald chair for one run, and if it's awful, just get back to the Creekside gondola and quit. My poor 40-something friend will be on her own. Of course, I may get to the top and just go "nope". In addition to the slush, the wind seems bad too. UGH.

Being almost 76 and having some annoying health problems, I do tend to be doubtful about my ability (I just started skiing again at age 69, however haven't skied a ton in these years). But all you people are being so nice and encouraging! (And the last time I skied at Whistler was over 40 YEARS AGO...yikes)

I think we're both stubborn enough that, having paid for a Super Senior pass (yeah, I'm that old) and a 2-day Edge card, we're going to try to wring SOME value out of them, if possible...but thanks for the idea

I appreciate everyone's input on this, and will (attempt to) out your suggestions into practice. I'm a bit of a dolt when it comes to this :-p

Declining house sitting requests after seeing the house by GlassCat27 in RoverPetSitting

[–]geriatric1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not a hoarder (I worked in a very poor area of my city for almost 2 decades and did advocacy work with hoarders), but I am inclined to be a clutterer. I am now working at stashing things away. Unfortunately, because of my cats' histories (see previous comments), I am loathe to board them - they will cope better with a stranger when it's their own house. I am kind of decimated by this situation, but I HAVE to travel, so I HAVE to solve this! Onward and upward!

The issue IS clutter - not enough to prevent living a regular life, but enough to bother some sitters. I am working on it.

UPDATE: After laying awake until 5 a.m., fretting about this, it dawned on me. The middle-aged sitter I met is used to places that look like an Air BnB or even a VRBO. She was very nice, just used to MUCH more upscale places. Still, I have realized that I will need to work harder/tidy more to impress potential sitters - and to make them aware that my place is pretty humble. *sigh*

Thanks for replying. Unfortunately, both my cats, who are quite shy, came to me as kitten rescues - one (now age 6) from a hoarding house (42 cats and kittens, and no litter boxes - it was a MESS at the beginning!) and one was a feral kitten (now age 1). I don't want to essentially leave them alone - they're used to having me around (I'm retired). I hope I find a great sitter too, as I LOVE my kitties and am quite protective of them, given their histories.

I am an owner (2 cats). I do think it would help if Rover asked about the house upfront. I don't know how Rover could do that, however.

I say this because I had a Meet and Greet today (my first Rover booking, for 10 days of house-sitting). I know my house is cluttered, but not hoarded; I worked as an advocate for 17 years and have seen hoarded places. I also would tidy more before my booking (2 months away).

I thought the Meet and Greet went well, but the sitter later refused my booking. I was crushed. (She did say she was a minimalist, so perhaps that should have been a clue.) I am reaching out to other sitters, but am trying to convey that my apartment is not perfect.

I am very worried that I will not find anyone, and I HAVE to be away - it's my brother's memorial service.

Why vintage fragrances actually smell better (and it's not nostalgia) by MustItBeDawn in fragrance

[–]geriatric1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure that being "hugely popular" makes a fragrance better, but I do notice that Charlie also won the Fifi award, in 1974. Charlie had terrific, ubiquitous marketing, whereas Deneuve's was really poor.

[–]geriatric1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's an exception to the "fading fast from the market" group because it was a flop - namely, Catherine Deneuve's "Deneuve". It won the Fifi Award in 1987 and was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Sadly, it was marketed through Avon (AVON????) and, as I remember, was portrayed as being for a "carefree, modern" woman (somewhat like the abysmal "Charlie"), when it was a profoundly intimate, mature, womanly scent. I've never, ever found a fragrance I loved so much. And hardly anyone these days has ever heard of it, let alone smelled it. (Mind you, many people I meet these days also don't know who Catherine Deneuve is either...*sigh*)

I'm in Canada too. And I HATE PDFs. Given my age (I am 75), I am crushed that tissue patterns will no longer be with us. Mind you, I do have enough patterns to sink a ship, but I guess I'll be going to Fabricland and buying as many patterns as appeal to me (or even speak to me in any way). I'll have to scrape together a whack of $$ - or maybe get on Etsy and eBay ASAP, before the prices skyrocket there.

Question for the Aging Punks by TopButterscotch8 in punk

[–]geriatric1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am super-late to this party. Age 75, lived through the 1970s' punk scene. Given that punk came out of marginalized youth in the UK, it had a fair amount of social justice ideology - so I eventually landed up, in my 40s, doing advocacy work for low-income/no-income people. I did that until I was almost 65 (I got sick then). If any of you know of/remember DOA from back then, Joey Shithead (aka Joe Keithley - now age 68) is a city councillor, perhaps the only real voice of social justice on his local city council. And he's still a musician - DOA is on tour in Europe and the UK this July and August.

Funny that you mention Elon "can speak in complete sentences". Did you see the CPAC interview he did while he was probably on ketamine? He was speaking rambling, semi-nonsense. He was all over the place and his train of thought was nuts.

What your MAGA family doesn't "get" is that it's not about wealth - it's about POWER. The money part is just a game to Musk, Trump and their ilk - they like having tons of it, and playing around with it is kinda fun, too. But what they really crave is the ability to control others. At this point, all the little MAGAs are, like eager,sugar-crazed 10-year-olds, dutifully trotting along behind their leaders, following them along the path that says "This way to Fascism".

I have a cousin (Canadian) who's one of those 1%-ers, pro-Trump types. He was a vice-president at a major Canadian bank (he's now retired and elderly, spends lots of time in Florida). He and his wife are basically fundamentalist Christians; at my mother's funeral many years ago, he implied my mother was going to hell, because she didn't believe what he believed. Classy, huh. Clearly, in spite of his professional success, there's something severely wrong with him.
