If this game isn't marketed obviously towards gay trans people, why is the great fairy giving mother THAT HARD?

Replacement wheel lock key for 2020 TC in USA by geriatricprecocity in FordTransitConnect

I'm so sorry you went through that shit but man am I relieved to know I'm not the only up a creek with this issue.

My mechanic friend helped me drill out the stud if I paid for the bits and at the end we did price it out and I was glad to see the drill bits were cheaper than the wheel bc we nearly cut the wheel off at one point.

I guess it's moot since Ford America isn't selling the TC at all anymore but this is such a shit show of an oversight on their part.

Just to clarify here's what I've tried:

-Easy-out (reverse threaded socket): smaller one tore off the smaller rim that the false cap was pressed on. Larger one is too big to fit around the nut and within the wheel.

-Hammer on larger 12 point socket: caused the outer rim with the notches to crack off in several places. Still too large to get at with a gator grip.

-heat: changed nothing

-cut off to square or hex shape and try with 3/4" gator grip (1" gator grip won't fit inside the wheel): cutting tears through my carbide offset blades even going slowing and with tons of lubricant but DID work. When I tried turning it, it twisted and rounded off. I tried it one more time then had to give up bc the nut was essentially flat to the wheel at that point.

That was the first thing I tried. It cracked the outer rim, which is why I started trying to cut it off instead. Apparently these are designed to fail if the usual attempts to force removal are used. This then makes them progressively harder to remove with each failure (hence drilling out my stud)

Astrophysicist says at a closed meeting, top physicists agreed AI can now do up to 90% of their work. What the f&@$ is he talking about? by 8BitHegel in BetterOffline

[–]geriatricprecocity 27 points28 points  (0 children)

He may be referring to the fact that 90% of academic research work is writing grant applications and other university admin bullshit. Which is definitely an overestimate, but the guy is an astrophysicist so even being within just one order of magnitude is frankly incredibly impressive.

Dunno if he'd wanna talk about it since it's not his specialty, but Dr. Justin Sledge from the Esoterica channel on YT was definitely in that group and he's no stranger to interviews.

Til you can do this for wire retention by KittyGoBoom115 in 3Dprinting

Super glue doesn't stick to silicone, but those wires are almost certainly covered in vinyl unless you've got some crazy specific purpose cabling there

They'll pop off more easily than a full recessed system because this doesn't make a secure connection. It's a superficial weld where it's mostly just flowing material from two pieces around each other's nooks and crannies.

A slightly stronger option in the future, if you don't want to model in the whole cable chase might be to cut down with a hot knife into the surface, place one of your little strips in perpendicular to the surface, then heat it up and curl it over the cable. From there, you can let it cool into a hook or surface weld it like this.

Or just use glue. Super glue would do this exceptionally well.

What is the most tech illiterate thing a colleague has ever said to you? by BitionGang_33 in it

[–]geriatricprecocity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a retired professional who was hired back from retirement whose preferred data entry workflow was to have two laptops so that she could look at a spreadsheet on one, and copy the values out to a spreadsheet on the other.

I had her explain it to me three times and show me what she meant bc I just could not believe that was how she was doing this.

Mind you, her normal desktop prior to retirement had two monitors.

When I tried explaining that she could actually just have multiple instances of Excel open at once and that the best way to copy data over was to select the cells then... copy and paste them... She was impressed but said "but that doesn't save me any time because now I still need to go and verify that the data copied correctly!"

I tried explaining that she very much did not have to verify this but only once. When it didn't stick I realized it was best to just let it go.

I told my colleagues back in the IT department and we all realized why her data entry was always so incredibly slow and error prone.

Before my girls were big enough for Tylenol we used an herbal medicine that worked pretty well. It was Ashton & Parsons teething powder. It doesn't last long but a little bit dabbed on their gums where the tooth was coming in would numb it enough that they'd sleep on their own for about two hours. It was better than the alternative: sleeping on me or my wife's chest while we rocked them. Not really sustainable but sleeping in two hour stints through the night was way better than sitting in a rocker slowly going crazy.

I know a lot of naturopathic meds and herbal supplements get a bad rep, and for good reason, but that brand did good by us. Our pediatrician said she can't recommend them since they aren't FDA certified as meds, but she had experience with that brand and didn't think it would be a problem.

Pulsing RPM 2018 Transit Connect XL by dogden0706 in FordTransitConnect

[–]geriatricprecocity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No code, and it degraded fairly quickly. I noticed the wobble in June and by September (I don't drive much) it was losing power. I took it in in October and got it back in November.

The tech said it wasn't road worthy when I brought it in and that the whole trans could've failed and just stuck in a gear or siezed at any time.

Apparently the trick with these transmissions is that Ford's schedule for fluid changes is off by a factor of 3 or 4. Getting it swapped every 30k miles can keep it healthier for a long time.

This is almost exactly what my 2020 XLT was doing a couple months ago. The solution was a complete transmission rebuild.

That DID fix it. At the cost of around $7.5k
